When Tels heard the inquiry about pancakes, he nearly stumbled. “I- what- no! Look around you! Didn’t you feel the Phoenix? Something’s gone terribly wrong, we’ve got to regain control of the Phoenix somehow!” As Tels looked at the man in Alask’s arm in broad daylight, the realization hit him. “Oh no... that’s Max, isn’t it?” Tels looked up at Lena, straight in the eyes. “Tell me you mean to help him gain conscious, get him to stop the Phoenix.”

Tels is a pretty experienced theif, so he’s trained himself to look for and analyze disguises. Sorry if the disguise was better than I thought, I just meant it as a nod to Tels training:P

Laurelai gasped as she felt the pressure suddenly let up, she had felt her mind on the point of breaking under it if it had continued for much longer. Whatever that was had been no ordinary Soother, not to get past two stability spikes and also affect such a wide area. She still felt deadened by it, the pressure was gone but its effects remained to some degree even now. She struggled to muster up even a small amount of anger towards it, but all she could feel was fear.

No, nothing controls me but me. Emotions are just a distraction, clouding logical thinking and rational decision making. Allomancy or no I should be better than this!

She straightened up, struggling to regain the breath that she'd lost when the Soothing hit. Tried to regain her composure.

That was when her mind finally processed what would happen, and she heard KanMien confirm her suspicions a moment later.

"Phoenix."

The giant creature that had razed half the city during the seven day war, probably killed thousands in its passage. It had arrived inexplicably in the middle of the war and then left just as suddenly after a huge explosion in the sky. Reports were mixed but a number of powerful figures met their deaths at the hands of the Phoenix, people far more powerful than she was. It was one of the DAs unique creations, creatures that only existed as a single specimen. Irreplacable and unable to be duplicated. She'd seen records of a number of them, but the Phoenix had always been the one that interested her the most.

After all, it was the Phoenix that had burned her house down when she was a child, the Phoenix that had made her an orphan like it had so many others.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The sudden shift in emotion caught Voidus by surprise, emotional Allomancy was a power that the Phoenix possessed but not one it made much use of. Not under ordinary circumstances anyway.

The force was not enough to cause any real concern, but he raised a Coppercloud to be safe. It was an ability that most who stayed in the DA for long managed to acquire, a failsafe against the inherent weaknesses of Hemalurgy. Stability spikes helped, but they could only mitigate so much. Copper was usually safer.

But the question is why is that necessary?

His eyes veered upwards once more catching a flash of red and orange as it past overhead, accompanied by a fresh wave of heat on the air. It didn't seem to be lingering here at least, it was heading towards something. But what? What had attracted its attention? The only thing of note in that direction would be...

"Plasmacore?" He asked, turning and seeing Mac and the Stranger arriving at the same conclusion.

With a start he recalled that they were not alone and his head snapped towards Laurelai, eyes widening for a moment before he saw her. She was still standing, and seemed focused enough that no influence had slipped in through her spikes. But she was breathing rapidly and pale, clearly she'd felt the emotional impact at the least and that had been enough to take the wind out of her.

Voidus' eyes narrowed as he glanced towards the Phoenix once more. The air had been almost hot enough to burn moments ago, but now there seemed to be a sudden chill surrounding him.

Lena shrugged.

"He's concious. Just as his wife. Can't have her die, or he'll stop doing what we want him to do."

She smiled at Max coldly.

"It's still not attacking the building. You'd better hurry, or your freak here won't take another breath."

Looking up she saw the storm approaching. It would be here soon. Whatever. It was just a storm after all. She'd never understood why everybody made such a huge tamtam around a strom, that came by regularly.

Zokora heard a noise and checked her device. For a moment, she stared. Then she started giving orders, her voice quiet, intense. The ghosts were gone, now that she focused, that she had something to do. She should have suspected, should have guessed something was wrong, as soon as it grew quiet around Althea, but she hadn't questioned it at all.

Tels stared, unsure what to think of the situation. Max and his wife, were in no position to bargain, and were obviously being blackmailed into controlling the Phoenix. Tels felt a sort of sympathy for them, but that was unimportant right now. The fate of the Aleycity very well might be resting in Max’s shoulders, and Tels would not be the one to stand in the way of that. It would work... for now. Not the way that Tels has intended, but it would work.

“Alright,” Tels said. “Does he have enough  zinc to control the Phoenix?”

Alright, thanks.

Kumiko studied the Phoenix, and a thought suddenly popped up in her mind. Switching to Bat, she let out a scream, and smiled when she heard it bounce back against the barrier. She had no clue for how long it would hold out, but it should buy at least some time, perhaps enough for the alleystorm to arrive. She found herself looking downwards, wondering about the other people in the building, if they knew what was coming. She could probably warn them, but was it really necessary? Besides, if she left for downstairs she might miss her chance. Besides, who would care if they happened to die? Her mind went back to the memories the Phoenix had brought back, and her face clouded over. "Oh come on!" She yelled, and then switched to Cat, running to the stairs.

Kumiko jumped down the stairs in a hurry, not even bothering to use the stairs themselves, kicking off the walls to change directions. She ran towards the room where the Ghostblood people were when she left., skidding to a halt in front of them. "We've got an issue," she said in a hurried tone. "Big flaming bird coming this way, something called the Phoenix? Something else seems to be coming as well, it looks like they're coming to this building. Barrier is still up, but I don't know how long it'll last." She took a couple of deep breaths, trying to calm down. "I suggest you leave now."

Lita stood in the middle of the dingy alleyway, trying to calm the racing of her own heart, still reeling from the sudden Soothing. Now that she knew what to look for, it was obvious. Her father had Soothed her on many occasions - she should have recognized the feeling. Though it had never been so powerful as that.

She turned her head to squint at this Phoenix thing, careful to shield her sensitive eyes. Tin let her see far too much of the creature, and a new wave of fear crested over her - her own this time. Lita looked away, trying to figure out what, if anything, she could do against some flaming bird. Fire. Heat - she could handle heat, if she had a place to store it.

Lita tapped her teeth with one finger, then removed her coat, setting it down about 10 feet away. She rolled up her sleeves, first the right, then the left, so that her brass bracers were fully visible - along with her two rows of tiny spikes. Lita knelt down, placing both palms flat against the stone floor, and pushed her tin even further down - right to the point where her eyesight began blurring again. The lack of sensation jarred her, but she didn't want to feel any more of what she was about to do than was strictly necessary.

She concentrated hard on the heat stored within her metalminds, tapping a stream and pushing it down, down through her palms and into the stone. Lita focused, clearing her mind for the moment, pouring all her mental energy into keeping the heat secluded in one part of her body.

Should have practiced with this more, she thought fleetingly, before shoving that away too. There was only the the stream of heat now, pouring through her palms and into the stone. It began to blacken and singe beneath her hands, the heat causing beads of sweat to appear on Lita's brow. Internally, she checked her brassminds; the storage was emptying rapidly, but there was still quite a bit of heat. She hadn't tapped in a while, and all the spillover from the Coin had pushed the reserve to the top. Lita continued to tap at almost a reckless speed, moving her palms to the side a bit, hoping that she wouldn't blister her hands. A bead of sweat dripped off her nose and hit the stone with a hiss, steaming instantly.

The ground was a blackened ring around her, and Lita finally stopped, stepping backwards and checking her reserve. Nearly empty. That was good. Two handprints glowed a sullen orange before her, the air above the ground shimmered with heat. Lita resisted the urge to store more, and wiped her brow on her shirt. The concentration had cleared her mind somewhat, and she began to burn her tin in earnest again, ignoring the uncomfortable heat. She looked towards Laurelai and KanMien, then at Voidus, Mac, and the Stranger.

"Right," she said, flexing her fingers and taking a deep breath. "Now what?"

The Soothing hit Freedom like a truck. Only fear and regret remained in her mind. Regret for being in that building, fear of it burning down. And most of all regret for not having stayed at home with her family. Feeling small, she tapped age, shrinking to a few years younger than she was.

The fear disappeared. As did the regret. Her mind was like a child's. Afraid of almost nothing and confident of every action. Of course, it didn't mean there wasn't room for reason. The Phoenix heading to a building was enough to scare her.

She hurried to the elevator shaft and began climbing down. It was long, but little Freedom had lots of energy and was very skilled at climbing.

Quote

It just dawned on me that Freedom has yet to enter a public building in this city that won't end up on fire.

---

He didn't have many regrets, but the few he had bubbled to the top. Eiran had left his mother in Newcago. She didn't deserve that--to have to fend for herself. His father was dead, killed, and now he probably would end up that way too...

Before he knew it, his phone was in his hand and he was calling her up. He feared she wouldn't pick up as it rang and rang. Maybe someone had wanted to call in a debt and she hadn't had the funds. Maybe she was on the streets. Maybe she was, he swallowed, dead.

"Hello?" his mother's voice answered.

Eiran breathed a sigh of relief.

"Is everything alright?" she asked when he didn't answer.

"No," he said. "I left you alone and now there's a Phoenix in the city and I didn't see it coming and I'm worried that's because it might kill me."

The was a pause. "Eiran, your ability doesn't work that way and I wouldn't want you here. Your mother likes to prove she can take care of herself."

"How do you know?" he asked.

"Because the last time you didn't see something that could have killed you it was because you'd, you know," she said.

He understood what she meant.

"Now, I don't know what exactly this Phoenix is, but I don't think you'll solve the problem by talking to your mum," his mother hung up on him.

She was fine. She didn't hate him for not being with her. There was nothing to worry about.

So why was he still afraid?

He looked to the PlasmaCore building and the Phoenix. Because of it

There might not be anything for him to see at the moment, but that didn't mean he was incompetent. He'd survived before he had his power, no reason he couldn't now. This just required some old-fashioned ordinary problem solving.

Mike called up to her.

Wes looked at the woman travelling back down the elevator shaft, but it had been hard for Wes to even get up, no way he was going back down that way. He saw Mike and Seom and the DA lady and he followed the lady down the stairs, running as he looked at the window and saw the Phoenix. The Soothing had gone but he was still scared, he was smart enough to know the Phoenix was coming after the PlasmaCore building and the shields wouldn’t be strong enough to keep it out.

Running to the bottom floor Wes tapped his bendalloy mind, reducing some of the hunger he’d gotten from the nervousness. Comfort food, he supposed. Looking to the PlasmaCore ground entrance doors he ran over to them, gesturing for the others to follow. “We need to go,” he said, looking up. The Phoenix looked much more intimating from the ground.

“Why do you need to destroy the building?” He said to Mike. “It looks like the Vortex was the cause of the problems.”

Wes gulped, wished he knew what to do. He hated being young.

—-

Lusk hated being old.

The Soothing had left him and Lusk saw Freedom jump down the elevator shaft. He did too, and made himself younger to his childhood days climbing up trees and whatnot to traverse the elevator cables. However, being so agile at his young age came at a price. He was now terrified of adults — all except for that nice lady who’d saved him from drowning — but beyond that one, any adult terrified young Lusk. Something to do with his father, probably, but when he reached the ground floor Lusk aged to normal, the fear mentality leaving him as quickly as his baby face.

Lusk walked over to the GB squadron that was at the ground floor. He didn’t need to use is earpiece because they were right next to him, and his voice was enough to gather their attention without needing it to be amplified.

“The Phoenix is coming to destroy this building,” he said. “Now, as much as I’d wish to leave it alone, once it destroys the building it’ll work on the rest of the city. Once we get out of this building, I want an immediate tactical planning of how to deal with it. Understood?” He messaged the words to the GBs who weren’t present and he thought about the guild alliance. They’d need to plan for this. The Phoenix was a rogue variable. Lusk hoped whoever had released it was paying the price.

—-

Max was paying the price.

He hit the ground with a thud and he looked towards Althea, currently being held by that psycho woman. His anger at her calling Althea a freak might have leaked through his voice, but he didn’t dare turn it to open insults, not with Althea so close and poisoned. Another day, when the psycho was behind bars and Max got to visit.

It’s the Phoenix you think it is, he said to Althea. But I can make it go away, the AlleyStorm is close.

“Look at it,” he said and pointed to the Phoenix, a shining spot in the sky, far brighter than a star and if you looked closely you could see its bird shape. “It’s moving towards the building, and fast. Just give it a couple of moments.” He heard some thunder and he saw the AlleyStorm approach. There it was. It was coming, and when it did, everything would be over. He and Althea would be able to escape. He just had to make sure they survived to that point.

—-

No one was surviving to any point, especially not the Enemy.

Alask’s body looked at Max with a blank. Using the link the Phoenix had forged into his mind he sent a signal. The Enemy was here, and he was ready to be killed, ready for the Phoenix to turn his body to ash and then his ash to more ash.

Kumiko looked at the mess going on among the others in the building and shrugged. That should be enough, she thought. She ran back to the stairs, and went back to the roof and looked around for the Phoenix. In her mind she started going over the plan one more time.

Aln stood at the base of the PlasmaCore building, her mind racing. Some kind of massive bird, made of fire, had been seen at the top, though now she couldn't make it out through the smoke. A dragon? She thought, recalling her study of creatures of lore. No...a phoenix. She gritted her teeth, then walked into the lobby of the building, and began to ascend the stairs.

She'd seen no sign of the enemy that walked, but the enemy of stone still stood tall. It still tried to rise into the skies and claim what was hers, still taunted her with its existence, fueling the rage that she continued to feel towards it. The enemy that walked could be dealt with later, she would find it eventually. But she already knew where this one lay.

Another great beat of her wings sent her careening towards it, talons spread before her and heat spilling from her to melt whatever her talons could not break. She lightened herself to start with, enough that her wings could keep her aloft and moving. But once she'd built up enough momentum she reversed that magic, draining the metal within her to become even heavier than a creature of her size would normally be. She thought about using the storm as well, but that was best saved for later. She would use the metal for now.

She soared across the city with blinding speed, ready to tear the center of the building apart and burn whatever remained. But just an instant before she reached the building she felt something else, a sudden force sprung into existence, pushing back as her weight carried her forwards. She saw a spiderweb of light appear beneath her talons and outlining the shape of a large dome, surrounding the building.

The same as then. Her mind flashed back to the last time she had felt the enemy, hiding within a different city and protected by a dome of energy. That time it had been the enemy that walked, but it appeared that this enemy of stone used the same tactic. All the more reason to burn it.

She had crushed her own body in this first attack, but before she could even begin to fall her bones had already snapped back into place, bruises and ruptured tendons had mended as though they were never there. She hovered over the barrier, perfect once more.

Amber eyes narrowed towards the dome as she stretched out her talons, ready to try another attack.

She received a sudden response from one of the connections she still heard. Not the Rival who still flew with her, one of the others, a walker and possibly a Kindred.
Found.
Her eyes lit up with glee at the message. Both enemies lay within her grasp. She could end them both and then burn the city to ensure that neither of them came back again.

Hold it. She sent back. This enemy will burn soon, and then that one will join it.

She moved a little higher towards the peak of the dome that surrounded this building and then let herself drop ontop of it, perching atop the force that continued to try to repel her. Her head cocked to one side as she regarded the light that spread out beneath her, and her talons flexed atop the shield attempting to dig through with sheer force. But that did not seem to be enough.

Burn.

Her flames flashed white once more as she pulled on her stores of accumulated heat. A sudden updraft was generated as the air became superheated and rose, new air rushing in to replace it. She had to fold her wings in to prevent from being pulled back into the skies, but she stood firm, talons still scratching against the shield, trying to find a gap that she could grip onto. But still the shield resisted.

Burn. She commanded again, beak clacking momentarily in irritation at its refusal to obey.

The flames spread out further still, spilling across the dome and down the sides towards the streets below.

Aln stood on the roof of the Plasma Core building, gaping at the bird that perched inexplicably on thin air. Flames billowed around the building, but none touched it. A shield of some kind she scribbled in her notebook, along with a description of the phoenix. What remains to be seen is whether or not the phoenix can break though. Aln looked around the roof for others that she could question. She knew, of course, that she had a very limited window of time before she had to run, but she was going to make the best of it. "Aln, this is dangerous," whispered her spren in her mind. Aln ignored him. How could she ask her guild members to take risks, but not do the same herself?

"Because it's the enemy."

A confused look crossed his face, while he followed Wes outside. You couldn't bring a building down, while inside.

"Or at least, a part of the enemy?"

His voice turned questioning, the signals he got were confusing, but they were what he had.

"The sky belongs to her, she rules the sky. Nobody has the right to trespass. I need to find the enemy, and the enemy is here."

Above him the flames spread over the dome and he looked at it in awe.

"She's beautiful, isn't she?"

He asked Wes and smiled.

"She will destroy this enemy for sure."

===========================

Althea continued to look at the ground, grateful for the shades she could make out by now. The Phoenix. Slowly she found the missing pieces, why she felt so weak, the woman injecting something, Max, and the Phoenix. The man who wanted to sacrifice them. There she was. The mighty Righthand, helpless like a small Underling. For a moment the sky lit up, and even she could see the shine of the fire, fear reaching out for her again. Fire. The city, the woman. Sebastian killing Solace. Althea lifted her hands and pressed them to her face, her sleeves falling backwards, showing the tattoo that had been a part of her for so many years. A Ghostblood. Inhale, exhale, the fire was far away, so far away, that she was save, it couldn't reach her. The Phoenix. Max rioting her, dragging everything out in the open, until she was back on the cliff, staring down, nothing left but that last, final jump, her life worthless. Althea felt her breathing picking up, but her lungs gave up when she tried to inhale more air, tried to breathe more quickly and she coughed painfully, rand for air. She moved over to Max, her flingers reaching out for his, tried to find comfort in the fact that he was here, that he was real. Oasis wasn't real. Sebastian was dead as well. Memories, nothing but memories. Unreal, memories, but they were strong, they were so strong. She remembered the fire burning through the houses, how the woman had screamed when she had soulcast her flesh, when she had sacrificed her. Althea moved Max hand to her face and pressed her forehead against it, tried to calm down, to think about their situation, about what they should do, how to get out. And yet the fire, the Phoenix attacking Oasis again and again. Her people dying. She had sworn to protect them and she was failing, she was failing. It was her resposibilty, to keep them safe, to make sure they would survive, that Oasis was a haven for those in need of a place to rest. Her hand started to shiver, when she took another breath, when she remembered kneeling in the bllod of her people, the Phoenix destroying her city, Septhis destroying her city, the people going crazy, killing each other. She felt her nails claw at her face again in an attempt to flee the emotions. It had been supposed to be a meeting. Nothing more but a harmless meeting. Blood, so much blood, so much pain and desperation.

=========================

Lena allowed the woman to move, didn't care where she was lying around. Sitting down she started to sort through her bag, looked for some poisons she could combine. They needed to be strong. Strong enough for the huge bird, but at the same time slow. The woman was to weak to survive another strong poison for a long time.

Tels saw the Phoenix fly.

And that terrified him.

Flames began to cover the PlasmaCore building, searing hot, blindingly bright, and yet the shield still held. The Phoenix perched on top of the shield, but even from a distance, Tels could still see the rage in it.

What a mistake this was.... first that blast of emotional allomancy, all of the business with this poor Max fellow and his wife, and now this wanton destruction the the Phoenix seemed so bent on creating. Tels knew, deep down, that bringing that abomination into the city was a mistake.

Looking over at Alask, he remembered the words he spoke, about sacrificing the “Enemy”. Tels had assumed that Alask had meant Max, and he himself had been willing to accept the sacrifice the man for the greater good of the Alleycity. Looking over the city now, Tels knew that his actions had doomed the city to fire and death.

Tels gritted his teeth, thinking over his options. Running would save his hide only, fighting the Phoenix was suicide, and there was no way he could convince a guild to fight for him. Options were limited, and he knew that they held only a slim chance of success for himself, and much, much, less for the Alleycity.

But if the Phoenix wanted Max so badly... perhaps there was a way.

Tels looked over at Lena, fiddling with more poisons, by the looks of it, probably for the woman. She would have to wait till later. Without hesitation, so logic could not convince him to do otherwise, Tels shot of ribbons of sand towards Max, yanking him out of Alask’s arms, and shot of into the sky on a multitude of sand ribbons. There was only one place he had a chance of success, a place he might be able to survive the Phoenix.

So, with Max in tow, Tels flew straight towards the Alleystorm.

She looked at the woman. "That's supposed to be a phoenix," she said, sounding annoyed. "It's coming to destroy this building, and is currently only held back by the barrier, which is starting to fail. When it does everybody left in the building will probably die. Which of course begs the question of why you're currently on the roof, the place where it's the hardest to escape with any special abilities."

Dark Phoenix joined the Phoenix, and a dark black fire mixed with the orange, filling the gaps until the buildings was surrounded. The places orange fire and black fire met, a eerie green flame sprung up massive flames with shapes likes faces within, silently howling in pain. The shield shattered, and the flames broke around it. Dark Phoenix screeched. Fire, fire, fire, fire. Destroy, destroy, destroy, destroy. Destroy, fire, FIRE, DESTROY. The mind of Dark Phoenix was a jumbled mess, and only three words remained constant. DESTROY. THE. ENEMIES. She burned down to the building. She would help the Phoenix. They would destroy the enemies. It was time for them to show the world what they were.
