“Mostly, yeah. You seemed pretty tired and were injured pretty bad, so I wanted to make sure that you were ok.”

Rob nodded. “Well, I am ok. How’s Shana?” He felt a little guilty at how much he’d hurt her during the sparring.

“She’s fine. All she needs is a little rest.”

Ben decided to understate her exhaustion. Rob was probably feeling just as guilty as Shana was.

Rob nodded. “That’s good,” he said. Sighing he looked up at Ben. “I’m sorry man, doing that to your girlfriend. Tell her I’m sorry too.”

He paused, and slid back down on his back, looking at the roof.

"Sure," Jamie said cheerfully, "Where I live, Metalborn aren't uncommon at all."

"Is that what your magic users are called? We're the Knights Radiant. So, how do your powers work?"

Ben nodded.

“I will.”

Feeling awkward and not knowing what else to do, Ben left, closing the door behind him. He walked to Shana’s room and cracked open the door. Peering in, he saw that she had already fallen asleep, as he had expected. He didn’t think anyone that tired would have been able to stay awake for so long. He smiled at the happy expression on her face. Shutting the door, he went back outside to retrieve his book.

=====================

Glint lingered for a while after Mahad left, pulsing with indecision. He really didn’t want to leave the feather they had found, but something could be seriously wrong. Eventually, he decided that he should go check on Ben. If Shana was in trouble, he could be too. He returned to find Ben helping Shana up the stairs, her head resting on his. They both seemed fine, so he went back outside to search for some pretty leaves. After a while, Ben came back outside. Glint zoomed onto his shoulder, knowing Ben could feel his presence. He didn’t offer any explanation to where he had gone- Ben could likely figure it out on his own.

=====================

Ben noted Glint’s reappearance on his shoulder. He had probably been off somewhere looking for eggshells or something like that with Mahad. He scooped up his book and walked back inside. He saw yet another new person sitting on the couch talking with Leona and Flid. They used to only find another Radiant once every few months- why were they getting so many new ones so quickly? He shook his head, then retreated to his customary corner to read. He didn’t want to interrupt their conversation.

Leona saw Ben walk in and sit down. She waved him over. "Ben, this is Jamie. She eats metal and apparently gets powers from it."

Highly confused by her statement, Ben came over.

“Hello, I’m Ben.”

He extended his hand for a handshake. He had certainly had enough practice with that lately.

I was godmodded out, don't blame me :P

Hey, is Jamie straight, bi, or a lesbian?

She liked my coffee! I smiled, content to wait until a new topic of conversation came up.

Pffft okay

I looked over, startled. Flid, one of the newcomers. "What? Yes. I'm fine, why?"

Probably bi.

She had another girlfriend a few months back and they broke up hard.

I'll get my post in a bit.

Oof, Cass may have troubles, then.

I blinked, wondering why. "Er...sorry, I don't know what to say."

Why's that?

Jamie tentatively shook Ben's hand.

"Ok. I'm no scholar in the Metalic Arts, but I'll explain a bit to you. As the name implies, the Metalic Arts are rooted in metal. The first art is called Allomancy. It involved metabolizing metal to gain power. The second art, called Feruchemy, allows you to store attributes, like speed or strength in metals and draw them out later. In both the Arts, the type of metal is important, as are your genes. Both powers are hereditary."

Ben absorbed the information, fascinated. He had no idea there were other, for lack of a better word, magic systems on Earth. He was burning with questions, but decided to let Jamie answer Flid’s before releasing them.

Would having broken up make Jamie more reticent to dating again?

"Why?" Jamie asked, "People marry based on who they love, not how powerful their kid's gonna be. Plus, marrying an Allomancer or Feruchemist doesn't ensure you'll have a kid who has powers."

"That's really interesting. Wait, didn't you say 3? What's the third one?"

She didn't say three on purpose. Hemalurgy is a big secret. Most Metalborn don't know about it.

“Question. Well, actually, several. What are the different powers caused by burning different metals? Can people having varying degrees of power with the same metal? Can all Allomancers and Feruchemists use all of their respective metals? Do they share the same metals? Can someone be both a Feruchemist and Allomancer?”

Ben spun, realizing he didn’t have any way of recording Jamie’s answers. He held up his book, and realized he had been using a pencil as a bookmark. He memorized his page number, then flipped to the end pages and got ready to write.

"There are sixteen metals, which both Metalborn use. I have a sheet some where with all 36 Allomantic and Feruchemical abilities. And um, yes, someone can be both an Allomancer and a Feruchemist. You're looking at one." Jamie finished and took a deep breath. She had drank all the coffee, and was starting to feel a bit fidgety.

“So you can use all 36 abilities?”

Ben said, his eyes widening. That was a lot of power.
