You can add so much more lore and foreshadowing in a book of that size, and it can give me more than a day’s worth of reading. Plus the magic is way cooler to me. Don’t get me wrong, I think Yumi is a really good book but Stormlight is like my dream series. I love a big fantasy with cool magic, and Sanderson goes above and beyond. 1

I respect and acknowledge your view. I like Stormlight Archive for all the things you mentioned. But for me, the grand scale makes it less strong. For example, I sometimes find it difficult to really care about some of the character viewpoints when reading Stormlight for the first time (specifically Shallan at first, because Kaladin had peak chapters and Dalinar/Adolin both had interesting chapters too). This is especially the case with some of the interlude characters (minus venli, who doesn't love Venli), as I just don't see why they're important (then again, some interludes, like Lift's one in OB? WoR? Are amazing). But that's just an overarching flaw with the format of lots of characters as a whole, and detracts from the experience.

I grin, then walk foward to the rack of weapons. I brushed my hand over each in turn, to see what would speak to me today. The staff buzzes slightly when I reach it. I grin again. The staff is my favorite weapon. Something about the lenght and versatality of it I guess. I pick up the staff, its weight familiar and grounding in my hand. Its a simple thing, this staff. A length of hard wood about five feet long and around an inch and a half wide. I spin it around my hand as I walk toward the sparring ring. "Owen!" Calls our intructer. "Get out here!" I can hear Owen sigh from where I stand in the middle of the sparring ring. It's not that he was bad with the staff - though he is better with the daggers - its just that I'm really good. Still, me and Owen are best friends, and next to me, he's the best with the staff. This fight was going to be so fun. Owen walks to the sparring ring - which is a dirt circle about 20 feet across - and we stand right out of range. We both bow, then take ready positions- right hand up, left hand down, about a 1/3 apart, legs bent, one foot back, weight on the balls of our feet. "GO!" Shouts our instuctor. Owen moves first, with a high swing with the butt of his staff. I duck. and luncg foward for a doward-diaganol stike to the inside of his kneecap. The blow connects. Owen grunts, topples sideways, his knee giving out. Instead of fighting it, he tucks and rolls, dodging and blocking my thrust toward his solar plexus. He comes up back in his stance, and lunges toward me with a long stab with the tip of his staff. I block by snapping my staff up so its vertical, and push his to the left of my waist. He comes up from his lunge, and whips the other end of his staff toward my temple. I lunge under it, and stab my staff toward his midsection. He blocks it enough to avoid the pressure point I was aiming for, but my thrust still its him in the ribs. Ooh that will really hurt tomorrow. For now though, I'll take the opening he gives me. I throw myself into a flurry of strikes, and its all he can do to keep up. He does manage - barely - to hit me on my outer thigh. I stumble. Recover. Block his next blow. Plant my feet and hook disarm him with a double strike. His staff flies out of his hands, lands witha clatter on the packed dirt below us. I step foward, trip him, and level my staff at his throat. "I think you should yield." I say brightly. Owen grins. "Nah." Pulls on my staff, flipping up and back to his feet. I send a roundhouse toward his face, but he's expecting it. He catches my foot and pulls. I don't fight it. Instead, I put all my weight on the foot in his hands, and swing my other leg up to clock his temple. He drops my foot. I spin up, sweep my staff behind his legs, and he lands with a thump in the dust. I finish the spin, and let my staff rest lightly on his chest. Owen grins. "I yield." "Excellent desicion." I say, then lean down to help him up. Masquerade. DRAFT 1 The flames of the ceremonial fire roar high into the night sky. I am standing about fifteen feet away, as any closer makes my costume a bit stifling. I'd better save it for the ceremony, and I have to walk through it. Sometimes I wish I hadn't manifested as a fire elemental. Still, being a Witch? The pros far outweigh the cons. The rest of our Coven mills around, chatting before the formal ceremony. I'm nervouse, but not much. Its incredibly rare that the Magics would withdraw from a Witch during the ceremony. I've never seen it, and the stories say that it only happens to those with betrayal in their hearts. That is not me. Becoming a Witch has been my dream since I was four, which is when I manifested. I've traind for it ever since. My best friends, Owen and Isabelle -Izzy- walk up to me. "You ready?" Owen asks through his mask. My ceremonial mask is writhing flames, engulfing my face and hair. Mine is all fire and light but Owens- Darkness. His face looks like a void. No shape. Just a black oval. It hurts my eyes, trying to see past the dark to the face my brain is sure must be there. Izzy's mask on the other hand, is the complete opposite. Owens mask is dark, all consuming. Izzy's is. . . defining. Her face seems to glow from the firelight, and her wispy, almost non-existent mask makes her seem like a sprite. Never ending and ethreal. "Guys, your mask are amazing!" I say, awed. Izzy flushes. I don't know how Owen react bc I still can't see his face at all. "Thanks." Owen says. "Who knew being a Shadow Walker could be so fasionable?" Izzy elbows him. "Ahem, fasionable is standing right next too you. Healers are all the rage, it seems!"
