Frustration Posted April 29 Posted April 29 I don't like the test all that much. My biggest gripe is the letter of the law/spirit of the law question. I hate that it's an either or, you should obey both. Yes I'm a skybreaker, how could you tell?

Decided to pop in here to say I agree with this. There’s a reason humans are involved in courts like with judges and juries etc. There’s all sorts of things in laws about how to balance these things. We just get into human disagreements about when they apply

That's the thing, I don't believe that they conflict. Well. Often, they do. I would like to point mainly at petty criminals and billionaires are prime examples of the letter of the law and the spirit of the law failing. Are billionaires evil people? Yes. Do petty criminals go against the law? Yes. Are those 2 things the same? No. 6 minutes ago, Frustration said: Did you just understand me? I understand you. I get how you think that the humans interpreting the law are always in the wrong, and never the law, but I find that view to be flawed (And very religious, but I digress). The law is imperfect. There is no good, official way to say 'these people deserve jail/punishment, and these don't' and not make anyone angry, or spark up debate. The spirit of the law is punish bad things. But in practice, not only do people get away with bad things (completely legally) or people get punished for doing nothing wrong. Edited April 30 by CoderDrag0n8

Well, I am very religious. 1 hour ago, CoderDrag0n8 said: The law is imperfect. Indeed, I would agree with you. No set of man made laws can be perfect. 1 hour ago, CoderDrag0n8 said: There is no good, official way to say 'these people deserve jail/punishment, and these don't' and not make anyone angry, or spark up debate. I agree, and personally I think it should spark debate, in part because the law is imperfect. I also think that the reasoning and structure behind the law is every bit as important as the law itself. 1 hour ago, CoderDrag0n8 said: The spirit of the law is punish bad things. The spirit would depend on the law in question and the intent behind them. You seem to have my views on the law associated with me being authoritarian. I'm actually a borderline anarcist. Odd, I know. 1

I'm actually a borderline anarcist. Odd, I know. Well. I guess I formated my point confusingly. My point is, no set of man made laws are perfect. They can't be. You agree with me on this. But the intent behind it, I would believe at least, is less imperfect. Ideally, the intent behind the law would be a good one. But my point is, what if the letter of the law leaves way for a loophole, while if you merely interpreted it with the spirit said loophole would not exist. The 'technically legal' stuff.
NerdSandwich she/her Posted April 30 Posted April 30 Ok Edgedancer, Bondsmith, and Lightweaver moved up a lot. Skybreaker sank...a lot. Yeah I knew Lightweaver would move up. Called it

NerdSandwich she/her Posted April 30 Posted April 30 Yeah, I think sometimes the letter of the law can be wrong. The question seems quite flawed.
Verdance he/him Posted April 30 Posted April 30 The letter of the law is literally trying to communicate the spirit of the law via language. Law becomes increasingly complex as more nuance is added to the flawed language that communicates this law. We have courts that allow human being to interpret the nuances of this law, for one reason, because a human being can make a decision based on the objective truth of morality via internal conversation. 2
