that gives me an AWESOME idea for STE. what if STE was trying to make the Alleys safer so that you can travel through them faster and better. but STE also would put tariffs and the like the get through their faster way. would that potentially work?

Potentially, but given that the alleys are also the home of the DA and related abominations, unrelated people trying to use them could end very badly for them. Also, as noted, the DA might take exception to a different guild trying to use DA territory for paid fast-travel.

Best explanation I've ever heard.

ah well, it might happen eventually, I think the STE would be wary of doing it outright, they would want to wait until they are sure they could do it.

There's also the problem that literally nobody other than the DA know how to use the Alleys in anything even resembling a safe manner, particularly in the Forgery since people don't even believe they exist.

Actually, that does make me wonder about a potential non-DA-exclusive magic system.

Though to be honest, even the DA people don't use the DA magic systems that much, aside from basic alley travel.

Then they won't ever be able to do it, tbh. I'm not sure about the current power level of the DA, since almost all their high-level (read god-level) department leaders aren't part of the rewritten, current DA, but even then, they do have a minor army of hemalurgic abominations available

hm, unless... is anyone in the shop for a war between guilds? or the DA collapsing? or maybe alliances between guilds against other guilds? this seems like it would be an interesting plot line if you guys haven't done it before.

It has been established that the Alleyverse has at least a few native spren call its own. You you could make a weird Singer-form out of or something.

Just once or twice an era every era since the dawn of the Alleyverse :P

We've had guild wars before, though they didn't always go so well. As for defeating the DA in a guild war... I guess it depends on what you consider a defeat? Lessening influence in the city is possible, it has happened before. Actually destroying them, probably won't happen, mostly thanks to the fact that they can simply retreat into the alleys where others can't touch them.

I was thinking less a local extension of existing magic systems, and more a full new magic system.

lol. are there any alliances between guilds that I should know of?

Hm, I wonder if potentially an alliance between guilds could be made against the DA to take down their hold on the alleys... also a new magic system is something I'd support.

They won't, largely thanks to the fact that nobody except the DA can really navigate the alleys, especially the deeper parts. Chances are they'll just all run into alleys that kill you in a bunch of horrible ways.

well I wonder if at least the DA could be driven into the alleys. maybe be trapped there. this could potentially be a better deal for the other guilds. hmmmm, thanks for the ideas y'all!

There was an alliance of guilds in era 1 to take down the DA, that culminated in the aforementioned nuking of the city.

Voidmaking isn't DA exclusive, just very rare and so not really easily learnable by people outside the DA. It's basically necessitating some discussion with mods to make happen. Then again I suppose in-world it's not technically an Alleyverse magic since it predates the universes creation.

hmmmm. the DA nuked the city? interesting. would pushing most of the DA into the alleys and then sealing off the entrances an option for an endgame?

Hahahahaha...  Been there done that. You know how everyone freaks out when they get their memories back? Yeah...  Check out the Seven Day War if you want more detail on how that goes.

True and true, I guess. And to be fair, alleymatics wasn't supposed to be DA-exclusive either, wasn't it? IIRC it was originally that if someone invented a new concept that got included in the alleyverse, their chars could control it. It just ended up morphing into a magic system revolving around manipulating the alleys.

Hmm, doesn't that mean alleytravel is just the most basic subset of alleymatics?

No, the space marines did

I think he is refering to the Phoenix.

This is more or less already the case. The DA largely don't actually care or interfere much with the wider city unless it's affecting them in the Alleys. Mostly because the RP becomes very boring if there are a bunch of demigods just wandering around handwaving the problems away. Though by necessity of the RP we do tend to mostly see the few members of the DA who actually do wander about the wider city from time to time.

No someone else nuked the city because the DA was defending itself and murdering pretty much everyone in the process. And no, not really. In part because there's just absolutely no way to seal the Alleys against the DA, but also because there are several demigod level department heads who would get personally annoyed at that and just use less standard Alleytravel to arrive in the city.

I think that was discussed yeah though we never really went anywhere with it that much. And yeah, Alleytravel is just the most basic application of Alleymatics.

Oh, right, the brass compounder blew themselves up to drive off the phoenix, right. Though iirc the space marines did perform an orbital strike later to get rid of the escaped and out-of-control DA abominations.

If I recall correctly the city was nuked because when everyone invaded and pissed off the DA they realized that was the best way to stop the fighting. The DA didn't nuke it, the invaders did it to stop the retaliation.

Yeah someone exploded on top of the Phoenix, which then out of respect retreated from the city. Then after that the marines nuked half the city from orbit to kill off the abominations that everyone was fighting.
Almost all of which could have been avoided if someone had not chosen to throw a fruit-that-shall-not-be-named at the Worldspike.

Now I kind of want to make a guild that promotes the sale of pineapple pizza just to see how quickly and how horribly they get destroyed. It might even break the forgery with the sheer energy and violence involved.

I feel like the Stranger was wise enough to excise them from existence in the Forgery. Some hatreds are too powerful to be overcome even with reality-bending magic that reshapes the entire world.
