Sequence stared at Cricket for a moment.

”… Enuller? Nullite? Uhh.. Congratulations! I think… I know I’m a Narrator and I really should know these things, but I don’t really know the full scope of Nullite’s properties, if I’m being honest… I know that it… Nullifies things, I think, so perhaps surrounding the vault in a layer could help?”

"Doesn't matter." Cricket sighed. He really didn't want to explain the powers of an Enuller right now.

"I'll keep that in mind," said Bacon, also looking around.

The setting seemed to be fairly traditional fantasy kingdom. A castle sat atop a large hill- almost a small mountain, really- surrounded by a dense and dark forest. Houses spilled forth beneath the castle, covering the mountainside with a vibrant tapestry of humanity.

The group stood atop an adjoining mountaintop, viewing the kingdom from afar.

"Hmm," remarked Bacon. "Interesting that I would come here, of all places."

Bacon choked. "Uh... excuse me, what do you mean by self-control?"

Bacon stared at Rebus for a long moment.

"You're serious?" he said. "Well, $#!*"

"Cricket!" exclaimed Bacon joyfully. "Long time, no see! How has it been?"

"I already have my protections all planned out!" exclaimed Bacon.

"It's been . . . fine." he lied. "Oh good." he said, switching tacks. "Then we can skip the Nullite. I wasn't sure it would even work."

"Well," mused Bacon, "I simply haven't been to this place in a very long time, is all." He stepped forward, waving his hand as he did so, and they moved. Suddenly, they stood amidst the clatter of cart-wheels on cobblestones and the shouts of merchants peddling their wares.

"A very long time indeed," murmured Bacon, a curious expression on his face.

they stumble into a cart and fall on the ground. "Ow! That was weird!"

"My name is Selene!" said the young woman.

Bacon, in the background, made a choking sound.

"Are you new here?" asked Selene.

Rebus stood in parade rest, watching the Horror’s slow demise. Just as Betrayal came within reach, Rebus spoke softly. “Of all the Horrors, I know you the best. The others might be parts of me, but you are how I started. Subtle, sudden, bringing the downfall of those foolish enough to trust me.” Rebus turned around, smiling. “Do you think, Betrayal, that you can strike me down?”

Rain began to pour. Bolts of lightning struck and booms of thunder sounded, while Venom died off to the side, finally rolling to a stop, legs curled above.

Betrayal froze, but strengthened his resolve, free hand forming a fist.

“Perhaps not. However, I would not be able live with myself had I not attempted to stop this.”

The pattering of rain could be heard from his jet black armor. Light glimmered off the rain on his sword when the lightning struck.

”I know you will win. But I plead to all that may be listening.”

He glanced to the sky

”This monster must be brought down. My death may be in vain, but I will die knowing I fought that which must fall”

He raised his sword and charged, footfalls muted slightly by the rain.

“Right! Of course…” Sequence waved her hand again, and the three were in a deep, underground chamber, deep beneath the mountains. It was hot, almost unbearably so. The walls were smooth, without a blemish or a crack, and it was dark. Sequence’s Narrationblade lit up enough to illuminate the chamber.

“… So.. What metal would that be? Hopefully you can provide it?”

"I've designed a titanium alloy for the purpose." Malevolence examined the room, then nodded and muttered a voice command under his breath. With a flash of lightning, several construction robots appeared and began setting up lights. "I suppose I could source it, although it would be easier if I could just give you the specifications and allow you to Narrate the surrounding rock into the proper metal."

He paused, then leaned a little closer to Sequence. "I have taken the liberty of installing an investigative network of drones around you planet for early warning purposes, so let me tell you this: Rebus is a madman and a fool if he thinks anyone can control the power of the Mantle. You know firsthand the corruptive power even a regular withergeist holds. So far as I know, not a single host of the Mantle has done anything aside from working to destroy all creation." He took a deep breath, adjusting his cloak slightly. "And please believe me when I say this, I want to rule TLT. Not destroy it. The power of the Witherlord would be incredible to hold, but I hold no illusions about what I would do if I were to take it up."

Bacon decided that Malevolence would be more useful building the vault than gallivanting. He didn't really seem like a gallivanter.

This was true, Malevolence would have grudgingly admitted if he could have heard Bacon's decision. Instead he settled for hearing everything going on through the spy devices he'd planted on Bacon, Cep, and all the rest of the group.

Rebus did… something. His eyes grew less bright, the air around him dimmed, his posture changed slightly. Most importantly, his crown disappeared. The man who looked like Rebus dropped to the ground, and smiled. “Ok.” he said calmly.

The Priest's mouth fell open. "...Truly? You... actually... agree? You'll change your ways?" He closed his mouth with a snap. "That is... unexpected. Is this some sort of trick?"

"Not so fast!" Malevolence interjected. "Actually, some Nullite would be excellent. Or at least some sort of Ennulling. I believe I have the technological edge over Rebus, but he certainly has the edge in resources and power. If he attacks this place with Narration, technological defenses will do little good."

Selene's eyes widened. "Whoa! So you travel the Dark Forest? What's it like?"

"...Selene?" Bacon finally managed.

She turned. Her eyebrows furrowed. "Do I know you?"

Bacon blinked, bewildered. "I- well, no," he stammered. "I just, uh, happened to know a Selene once. That looked, er, very much like you."

"Wow!" said Selene. "What a strange coincidence! Maybe it's fate!"

Bacon flinched at the final word, almost imperceptibly.
