Rose scowled. “Well, you’re not even real. So there.”

“That would be nice.”

“I’m as real as you: not very. And I understand the only way to not get hurt. So there.”

Rebus smiled broader. “Do you have any goals we could accomplish? Working on my goals would defeat the purpose, of course.”

There was a log by the air strip.

He sat down and buried his face in his hands. He knew he screwed up. But he didn’t know how to fix it

He blinked.

"I mean but can you imagine how that would work, though? Hades! C'mere Hades!" he laughed.

She blushed. “Yeah, I guess…… but do you have a better suggestion?”

She summoned two extra-bright lanterns for the both of them.

Bat took it, holding Illusion out in front of him, and stepped warily toward the stairs.

Rose hesitated, then decided not to debate the first fact. “Oh? How’s that?”

”There is something I need to do. How do you feel about necromancy?”

He heard a rustling sound.

The boy was waiting for them at the bottom. He stood next to a wooden door, a sinister red light pouring out from underneath.

"Shh," he whispered. "Gotta be quiet . . ."

He cracked the door open and slipped into the other room.

“Simple; hurt them first. You do it already, you know.”

Rebus pretended to frown disapprovingly. “Many variations of it involve desecration of the dead or mind controlling a spirit, and many would argue that is morally wrong.” He grinned. “Naturally, I have no problems with it.”

Hahaha I love rebus

She bristled. “What are you talking about?”

She grinned. “To the ruins, then.”

Bat peeked inside.

Inside was was large storage cellar with dirt walls, wooden shelves lining the edges of the room. The same red crystals poked up through the dirt like glowing, malevolent needles, sharper and thinner than the first ones they'd encountered.

The boy had vanished into the back somewhere.

"This way!" he hissed. "Don't touch anything!"

Bat edged through everything, careful not to leave Tam behind.

This seemed like a terrible idea.

It definitely did.

Tam gripped his hand and stowed her lantern away. There was more than enough light being emitted from the crystals.

"In here!" the boy said, poking his head out of a doorway.

Five was still on the plane, which would soon prove to be a very bad thing.

Bat stepped toward the doorway and peeked inside.

Inside, laid out on the floor, were ten or so people.

All of them looked similar to how the boy had been when he'd found them.

Lemme see, Tam said, peeking over his shoulder.

Pyk continues to look down, closing his eyes. A tear fell from the eyes, and he put his hands on his head.

He stood abruptly, turning and leaving in a blue mist, walk-running out.
