Malevolence was quite intrigued by this other offer, but had no time to send a response, busy as he was hurriedly preparing for another strike. Definitely not a response similarly encoded.

You’re fighting people with incredible power. Tam was able to simply erase any trace of the radiation poisoning, and though your poison was harder to heal, they called in a favor from me and I extracted it. It’s interesting stuff; I had to fill Cricket to the brim with nanomachines to get it out. And Bat especially is both not your target and someone you should not mess with. He has many powerful friends, and is apparently developing powers. In general, unless it’s a last resort, don’t harm people you don’t need to. It makes people upset, and upset people cause problems.

Threaten some people - you may take money if you’d like - and hint that you’re with the Machination. Tell anyone who seems receptive to our cause that we’re hiring. It doesn’t matter who they are or what Author they’re from. Promise money and power - these we can offer you as well.

If only Bat knew it was there and could screech before all of the Authors returned to see him make a spectacle of himself. 

But reality is cold, hard, unforgiving, and unchangeable.

He would have objected to that wording. He wasn't flailing, he was scrambling away. 

Though it could be argued they were the same.

In fact, there was a whole nest of vanishing snakes in the general vicinity. Nobody had noticed before now because they were harmless, generally nocturnal, and often invisible. This which was why the one Bat noticed had been asleep, after all.

In fact, if Bat looked closely at the grass, it was filled with snakes, both visible and invisible.

Well.... it's a long story. There was once this guy named Iarax, and he basically brought the Narrators to us for the first time. So we use him as a swear word, basically. 

He noticed the snakes and bit back another yelp, moving to step away--- what were all those other snakes doing there?? 

This happened to other people, right? Not just him?

Luckily for Bat, at least one other Author does like him. The snakes are all fast asleep, and would rather leave than bite if stepped on.
