This seemed like a good outcome.

Exactly.

Tam scuttled up to Bat again.

"Hey! I'm back."

Beosta decided to find out just how deep underneath the sand she could dig.

--

Bat smiled, though he did still take a step back. "Hi. Is Cricket okay?"

"Okay then." Subversion snapped her fingers and a spirit doctor appeared.

He looked around in total surprise, holding a pair of glowing tweezers and a strand of unicorn hair as if he'd been in the middle of stitching somebody's soul back on. "Where am I? Where'd my patient go?" Then, since he was slightly more Thread-aware than a regular doctor, he stared at Subversion. "Are you... a Narrator?"

"She is." He turned to Subversion. "His patient will be okay, right?"

Tam rolled her eyes.

"Not again!"

She made sure the patient was alright.

The insect landed on the traveler and bit her, drawing blood. It lapped at it thirstily.

"What? Were we not able to do that before?"

Maybe he's learning from ... at last

"I'm here," said Bacon. "I'm just going with the trends."

(He was a crab.)

"Oh! Hey! What's Subversion's plan B? She won't tell me."

"Ripping her emotions out, locking them away forever, and dealing with Nogard to make sure they don't come back," said Bacon. "Why?"

"She didn't specify. But I wouldn't worry; I'm sure it won't come up."

But Livetha told me, so I guess I did already know.

"Bye? We still have a good forty-five minutes before they could show up!"

And then she turned him into a crab.

Cricket looked at Tam, scuttling. A crab, really? I guess I'll confront the Enullers as a crab.

1 hour ago, Ookla the Arbiter said:

"In that case, I would think you should start running. Personally, I'd join them if those were my options though. Run, join, fight? You're not gonna win the fight, I highly doubt you'll out run them, so that leaves join them."

"I have a plan." he paused. "I think."

The wet sand was surprisingly well suited to tunnels. Which was quite fun.

Bat took the cue and laughed as well. "Crabs are cool. Yeah."

Gaioh was relieved to hear this.

Relax, I'll turn you back before the hour is up. If I don't, just remind me.

Wheeeeeee-! Shoe said, running in circles through one of the tunnels.

"Yep! Sorry you can't join us. It's pretty fun."

Hmm . . .

She wondered what would happen if-

She suddenly vanished.

Thanks. Why a crab? I mean, I know you do random things, but I figured some other things would come to your mind first, like you know... a cricket. he said sarcastically.

"What if Subversion's other personality doesn't find an answer?"

The tiny sand person from earlier came and sat on the sand by them, the little glass crown still on its head. It watched them curiously.

Believe it or not . . . that actually did not occur to me. Ever.

I guess I've just stopped associating "cricket" with the animal, now that we're friends.

And I chose a crab because it was fun to be one, and I thought you might enjoy it, too.

Heh, thanks. You know, Cricket's not actually my name? It's a nickname.

. . . Are you doing that thing that Shoe did to Beosta?

Shoe popped out of the sand, spraying it everywhere. Huh?

Nothing.

He stared at her suspiciously for a moment, then slowly sank back beneath the sand (in a very comical way).

No, I'm not. What kind of noble father would name his son Cricket, of all things. He blushed slightly, well as much as a crab could blush. It's Charles, well Charlie.

Aww, really? That's an adorable name!

And hey, I wouldn't put it past anyone to name their kid something weird. I mean, what about Shoe, y'know?

Shoe popped out of the sand in a different spot. What about me?

Uh, nothing.

He narrowed his eyes at her, then sank beneath the sand once more.

Cricket chuckled. Your parents weren't noble lords, I'm assuming. Everything had to follow the rules. They wouldn't dream of doing something so improper as naming their kid Cricket. It needs to be a good, respectable name.

So how'd you get the nickname, then?

Cricket's expression darkened. That's... not a story I like telling. Regardless, it stuck. Charles never really fit me.

"It's fine! That was my fault, I suppose." She laughed quietly, tilting onto her side, trying to regain her balance.

"Not sure why I did that."

Charles doesn't fit you, I agree. Charlie totally does though.
