Ryna rested her hand on the book. “The Codex,” she said simply. “Stories, truths, and a few things that don’t fit neatly into either. It’s not meant for just anyone to read.”

Her gaze flicked up, steady. “That answer enough?”

She nods. “It sure is. So what are you doing here?”

Ryna leaned back slightly, studying Evaiya as though weighing the honesty of the question.

“Passing through,” she said at last. “Listening. Writing. Chroniclers don’t stay in one place long.”

Her fingers idly traced the edge of the Codex. “But you… you caught my attention. That doesn’t happen often.”

Ryna’s gaze stayed steady. “A protector, huh? I’m not here to cause trouble… though even harmless visitors can stir a forest.”

She shifted slightly, keeping her distance, careful but attentive.

Ryna considered the offer, her fingers lightly brushing the Codex. “I appreciate it,” she said finally. “But I don’t intend to stay long. A village… might be useful, though, if I need supplies.”

Her eyes flicked toward Evaiya. “It’s rare to find someone who notices the small details.”

Evaiya shrugged. “You have to notice them to help nature. Small details you miss could be the difference between a thriving tree and a sick tree that would kill the forest.” She sighs. “But regardless, the villiage is a bit far away so we wont make it before dark if we leave now. So i suggest staying here the night and leaving tomorrow morning.”

Evaiya set down a cup of the best jasmine tea ever. She sat down. “What’s that?”

Cep takes a breath. "This way," he says, striding off down the street.

Ryna nodded slowly, her posture relaxing just a fraction. “That makes sense,” she said. “Staying the night sounds wise… better than stumbling through the forest in the dark.”

She glanced toward the window, the fading light painting shadows across her features. “Tomorrow, then. I’ll take your advice.”

She nods. “The guest room is down the hallway on the right. I have some duties to attend to out in the forest before the sun sets. Can i trust you to not cause chaos in my home?”

Ryna’s golden eye met hers evenly. “You can,” she said simply. “I’m not here to make trouble. I’ll stay out of the way.”

She gave a small nod before standing. “Lead the way to the room, and I’ll settle in.”

She walked down the hallway where some flowers and vines lined the wooden walls. The room was quaint. Containing a neatly made bed with a simple nightstand and some glow vines making a lamp.

As they walk, the streets slowly clear. Then, faintly, screams can be heard, growing louder as they continue. They turn a corner, and before them several people in navy blue uniforms are spread around. Some lie slumped, not breathing, eyes staring at nothing. Others are curled up or writhing, screaming and muttering, eyes darting wildly or squeezed shut. In the middle of the street, a boy of around twelve sits. His blond hair is barely visible through the grime coating him, and his hands clutch at his head. A brilliant white blur surrounds him.

Ryna paused at the doorway, taking in the space with a quiet glance. The glow-vines caught her attention, their soft light reflecting in her golden eye.

“It’s… peaceful,” she murmured, almost to herself. Setting the Codex on the nightstand, she let out a small breath and sat on the bed, testing its firmness.

Noting the care in every detail, she added softly, “You take good care of this place.”

Erryin pauses in shock and instinctively runs to the boy. “Hello? Are you ok? What happened.”

Ryna nodded once, eyes following Evaiya as she left. She sat on the edge of the bed for a moment, hands resting on the Codex, listening to the faint sounds of the forest creeping through the walls.

After a slow breath, she leaned back, letting herself relax just a little, the quiet of the room settling around her like a shield.

Their hands go right through the boy.

"You can't interfere," Cep says. "We're here, but it's not real. Just a memory. Besides, this isn't the important part. He is." On the last words, his voice becomes laden with disgust and hatred as he points at a man casually strolling through the soldiers.

Ryna’s gaze flicked to the window, catching the delicate outline of the deer framed by the fading light. She stayed perfectly still, her golden eye observing its cautious movements.

A faint smile ghosted across her lips. “Not alone, then,” she murmured, almost to herself, her hand brushing the Codex as if sharing the moment with the forest itself.

He walks up to the boy and crouches down in front of him. He gently reaches out and pulls the boy's hands from his head. "It's okay," he murmurs. "You're safe."

The surrounding soldiers collapse completely, panting, as the blur around the boy disappears. His eyes open, tears forming.

"Shh," the man says, pulling the boy into a hug. Behind his back, he makes a sharp gesture with his fingers. The soldiers still alive jerk, and then fall still.

Taeidin, having been in contemplation for a bit, looked up and approached Jackson again.

"I agreed to assist your Author with one of their plot lines after the completion of my quest. I am no longer working towards retrieving the Pages," he pronounces.

Ryna froze, her smile fading into sharp alertness. Her gaze swept the room, then the window, though nothing seemed out of place.

Her hand rested firmly on the Codex. “Voices without faces rarely mean peace,” she said quietly, her tone edged with wariness. “Who are you?”

The golden eye glowed faintly brighter as she listened for the giggle again.
