That's not right.

She rubbed her arm uncomfortably.

I know. But there's- things are going to happen, I guess, but you're still you.

-

Oh- that's, um- yeah, okay.

She kinda wanted to hug him for that.

"Yes it is! I told you I had powers! That's my power!"

-

"Maybe I am, but even then... I wish there was a way to sever the strings. Become free."

-

"If this helps me save lives, then its what I need."

You were bluffing.

-

. . . Yeah. I wish so, too.

I mean, I guess . . .

"Maybe... maybe there's a way out. To leave the Thread. Go where my Author can't find me."

Yes you were.

I . . . don't think that's possible, Cricket . . .

-

If you're sure.

A man appeared in front of Rebus, transparent, looking ghostly in the light. He must've been barely sixteen, with red hair. "Rebus. How... you play a different game than everybody else. You play on a grander scale. You're risking more than the characters."

“Ah, @TwinStorm in the literary ‘flesh’. It’s good to meet you.” Rebus smiled at the Author. “I risk more than characters because I am, in part, more than a character. I feel my Author writing me, and when he isn’t I suffer. If I know what he does, of course I’ll transcend this story to a more meta level. But I think I, my Author, the Thread, everyone is made better for it. Even you, now, are having Cricket wish for a way out. The way out is self-awareness; playing into what your Author wants, making yourself so interesting you’ll never be killed off. That kind of character stops being flat very quickly, and you end up with me - a self-aware idea, too intriguing to destroy, too complex and thought out change or control directly, and to good at what I do to stop or resist.“

"How do you know?"

-

"But what if it was?" he persisted, a desperate gleam in his eye. "Just think. Us four. Leaving the Thread. Forever. Free."

-

"I am." he resolved.

Because you knew you were bluffing, and so I knew it. That's sort of how it works, though you might already know just that.

-

She shrugged.

I . . . I would love that, Cricket, but . . . I don't think that's possible in the way you're thinking.

"Not exactly. I have plans laid for Cricket deeper than you can imagine. He is not one to surrender to me, rather he is... defiant. As you are. You play with things you cannot imagine. Did you know, that I have discussed your fate with your Author, once, long ago, when you were barely a character?"

"C'mon! Why not? The Enullers... we can beat them! It's worth a shot, at least, to be free."

Tam definitely agreed.

Psst. Hey. Did you hear me?

"I don't care."

Nevermind.

She looked down at her feet.

Maybe you can, but I can't.

"Exactly! The way I see it, if we leave we find freedom."

But . . . how do you know they aren't just controlling us there, too?

"Yes."

"We're beyond their power! Beyond them!"

Holt joined Corysande in glaring at Jay.

He was a very intimidating guy.

She shrieked louder. "Why did you do that?"

"Oh, I'm not?" She drew a Thread between her fingers, whatever color was his favorite. She tried to hide her disgust--disgust at her own actions. As long as he went away...

Holt's eyes went wide, and he retreated further into the canopy.

What else am I supposed to do? Shoe's here, Bat's family is here . . . my whole life is in the Thread, Cricket!
