She smiled. “You’re quite welcome. Go on, now.”

Bat waited at the front door.

-

“You don’t want to find out.”

She smiled and walked out with him.

-

She grumbled something and sat.

"Irie Bella Johnson."

She shrugged. "All right. Follow me."

-

Her breath shuddered. "No, no... you can't do that. Please... just leave him alone..."

He stood, following close behind

-

"It's for your sake. Don't worry. He'll be better eventually"

He took her hand but stayed quiet as they walked toward the council building again.

She took him into another room full of fancy surgical instruments with a dentist like chair. "Sit."

-

"No," she whispered.

So, where are we going?

I need to report the worm thing. And whatever that tentacle beast was.

"And what if we tell them the truth? Is there not one who would still help?"

"Maybe they would, once they realize the world isn't going to fall apart."

"Good." He stood up straight. "Then bring me to them."

She led him to a heavy-duty elevator that descended for a long, long time into a large, open hangar sort of space. There were many heavy duty doors around the edge.

. . . Oh, right, duh!

He laughed.

They got to the council building, where he filled out a form, suffering under the receptionist's judgmental gaze. Finally he put the paper in a basket on her desk, and then they left.

Huh. That was fast.

They process forms like that quickly, even if it’s me. He slowed. You head on back. I’ll be there in a minute.

She slowed with him.

Why? Where are you going?

I thought I’d refill some of the stuff in my bag, since we’re in the area.

Glen simply kicks it away again.

Absolutely furious, the meerkat charged him again and chomped a big bite out of his shoe.

Oh. Well, I want to come still, if that's alright.

He hesitated.

It’ll be really boring, Tam…”

So? It'll be boring back at the house without you, anyway.

She grinned at him.

He smiled back hesitantly.

Okay, then.

He fiddled with the clasp of his bag as they walked deeper into the first level of the city, which was very nice and well designed compared to where Bat lived.

She looked around at the architecture.

This is cool.

He nodded. This part of the city is really nice. That’s the medical clinic up there.

He pointed to a tall, happy building.

Oh! That looks nice.

He nodded. I had an internship there for two years while I was getting my degree.

She'd never thought about him getting a degree, before.

It made sense, though.

Did you like it there?

He nodded. I rarely broke stuff. Everyone looked at me sideways, but it was still nice.
