Rebus scoff. “That’s not a very helpful or consistent statement. Not only are language and clothing technologies, my body is over twenty percent nanomachines by weight.” He tries to stick his hand into the Nullite fog.

The cavern lights up around them.

"The first Narrators discovered the First Truth." Desolation pointed at pictures, all formed by the raw narration. "They cheated their way out of their Author's Grasp, and what they found was truly devastating."

Desolation traced Foreshadowing across the walls, until it led to one final etching in the wall. A picture of an Author in the from of a faceless deity, channeling Narration down into the thread. "The Authors are the true forces at place. Everything we do, everything we have done, everything that will be done, all of it has been determined by the Authors."

Desolation formed around Rebus'. "We have no free will. We are not characters, or living things, or even tangible entities. We are... Puppets. But for what? And why?"

Desolation pointed to the raw narration pool in the conic hole. "Narration was given to us by the Authors to farther their agenda. And whatever their agenda may be, it worries me. Why introduce such a chaotic and destructive power?"

"It was in this chamber that the First Narrators did something they would regret."

"They Narrated themselves into an author."

During early portion of the explanation, Rebus laughs. “While I must admit, you know much about history, you clearly have little firsthand experience with Narration or actual writing. I am more alive than you would think - otherwise I would be very speedily written out of existence. Of any of my Author’s creations, I am the most emergent; his mental simulation of me causes him to root for me, and makes me have personality and agency.”
At the end, though, the mirth recedes. “They made themselves an Author? Why would they want to do that or think it would work?”

It's best not to do that, I think. You could tell her that's the plan, but we don't want Malan to have any reason to suspect something is wrong beyond what we can't control, and Stone surviving somehow is rather implausible.

The hand goes through the fog, and hits an object.

By the way, you can see through the fog, it ain’t that thick.

At the base of the castle, near one of the narrow bridges, there is a claymore and a shield with a bit of grass on it. All your other stuff that-you-know-what-I-mean-is-technology.

Go pick up the shield and claymore, cuz you need to use them of your quest.

Rebus scowls at the Author as every one of his nanomachines go offline. Waving Atriedes to take the shield and grass (@Ookla the Irreplaceable), he picks up the claymore. He smiles somewhat smugly, then swings the claymore to get used to its extra weight, nearly dropping it as he lets go with one hand by instinct.

Rebus raises an eyebrow. “What am I to do with a shield? Claymores are meant to be wielded two-handed, and it ruins the symbolism.”

The symbolism is Dark Souls, and this is what I used in this region - I bless you with 30 or so strength so you can use it one handed.. Now go on the bridge.

There is a large gargoyle on the bridge. It hasn’t seen you yet.

Rebus smiles as his internal nanomachines reactivate, then takes up the shield and spins the claymore to reacquaint himself with his skills. “The Plotblades we desire, too, are symbols. Would Savior Complex not take the form of a shield?”

"It's more about protecting through death than actual protection, at least according to my Author. He prefers more traditional  approaches to Plotblades."

Atreides walked towards the gargoyle, unfearing.

I'm going to have to leave for all day in like an hour

“That is a truly dangerous blade. I’ve done some thinking, and there are two kinds of Plotblades. One is a characterblade, which gives the wielder specific traits and generally augments them. The other type is a storyblade, which tends to inflict alterations to the struck entity’s role in the story. Lore and Suddenly Pineapples are the only two blades I can think of that do not fit the categories.”

It wields a halberd and has an axe attached to its tail. It swept the halberd in a wide arc, getting ready to sweep again.

I would recommend blocking with that cool, overpowered shield I so graciously granted you.
