She stepped back but didn’t do anything.

The Intent reaches the Nullite, and the metal collects fully into a sphere. Half the arm ceases to exist as the remainder drops through the floor, leaving a hole. A pulse of ordered darkness destroys the air around it, sucking more nanomachines in. The arm, now an orb of grey metal and magical blackness, stops two floors down. It has Ennulled the gravity and its own trajectory, allowing it to hover in place, and lightning arcs off of it.
Security personnel in the form of utility fog clouds have already attempted to detain it, but fry, fall apart, or are wiped from existence as the electricity and ordered darkness make contact with them. Rebus looks down the hole, laughing in shock. “That’s… unexpected.”

She wasn't . . . scared, per se.

"I-I don't know," she said quietly.

“I bet it’s a woman,” he said. “Maybe someone a lot like you. Somebody nice and sweet.”

”And just a teensy bit petty,” Rose added. Bat sighed.

“I bet she’s really smart, too,” he said. “And that’s why you’re so smart. And she probably really loves writing you, because of how similar you are.”

Disclaimer: these are Bat’s views. I may or may not share them, but they are Bat’s.

She blinked.

You should prolly chat with Xino…

The orb hovers there, more electricity arcing towards it. Rebus keeps looking down at it, but asked. “Can you agree to exempt that thing? It’ll probably Ennull every fog construct out of existence otherwise. And I should likely call the Ennullers.”
Indeed I should. But this does work, as far as I understand canon. @xinoehp512

She snorted. "I have no idea. I . . . I hope so." She really just wished that she didn't have to have an Author at all . . .

She took a deep breath and ignored Rose. "What about you?"

“Exempt?” She said blankly.

“Well…” he frowned thoughtfully. “Probably some guy with a computer. Someone who knows what it’s like to be alone. And… and either he hates me for having things he doesn’t, or he loves me for it.” He took a deep breath. “And if he hates me, then this won’t end well for me, because he’s too bitter. If he loves me, then… either it’ll end badly, and he’ll cry, or it’ll end perfectly, and he’ll be happy.”

". . . Your Author is female, actually," she laughed quietly. "I know that much."

Then she hugged him tighter and buried her face in his shoulder. She didn't want him to die.

“The security system is trying to imprison and/or eject it for destroying things.” The floating orb fries another fog construct, electricity arcing into from the collapsing cloud.

He blushed. “Oh. That changes things.”

He liked how she smelled— like warm sunlight and ripe strawberries. At least he thought those were strawberries.

“If my Author’s a girl, she probably doesn’t hate me,” he said. “If I’m a nice person. I think I’m a nice person.”

“Interesting… I wonder if we can get another dimension…” Rebus continues following Desolation down the stairs, ready to reenact the final test.

Desolation motioned towards a doorway. "Within the door was the final test. Enter, and you will see."

He took a deep breath. “Okay. Then I have a good chance. I’ll prolly survive.”

Oh, shoot, were they still hugging? He pulled away. He didn’t want her to think…

Think what? Why did it matter? Plus, she still looked nervous. He didn’t want her to be nervous. He hugged her again.

She let him hug her, not caring.

In truth . . . there were a lot of things that terrified her. Especially recently.

But she didn't need to bother Bat -or any of the other- with any of that. They already had enough to deal with.

So she just hugged him back.

“We’re gonna be okay,” he whispered. “I promise. Even if I have to… to… kill an Author. I’m not goons let anything happen to you.”

The nanoconstructs back down, and electricity arcs from random objects around the orb instead.

Sequence nodded, sipping her own tea as well. "What's your stance? On the Great Wizard's innocence, I mean."

“He probably didn’t want to steal the Plotblade for himself.” Unintelligible responded. “But his actions did have harmful consequences.” He took another sip of tea. “So I’d say he’s partially guilty?”

Malevolence watched Bat and Tam with an odd expression on his face. It seemed a mix of revulsion and wistfulness.

She laughed sadly. "I seriously doubt you could kill my Author . . ."

But at the same time- well, she supposed it was the thought that counted.

"Thank you."

"Well... I'd try."

You better not ever hurt her, he thought threateningly to Tam's Author. Then he felt silly for thinking she (probably she) might hear him.

I'm not the one hurting her, said a feminine voice in his head. It sounded sad.

He jumped badly. Wh-- who are you? Are--- who's hurting her?

His heart sunk. Am I hurting her?

Oh, are we speaking directly to characters right now? A male voice asked. Bat, you should totally trust Malevolence. He actually wants to work with you for the moment.

Bat... managed to not scream. But he was deeply disturbed. I... what?
