". . . Really? I could've sworn . . ."

She shook her head. "Regardless, there's gotta be a better way to do this."

He nodded. "Yeah... but like what? I mean, I can send it to you if I focus, but I already have a headache."

Suddenly, pineapples.

Nerdy realized how strange it is that "Suddenly, pineapples" is still a running gag on this thread despite asdfmovie being over ten years old.

The pineapples did not care. They continued existing.

She thought for a moment.

"Well . . . uh . . . I could make something that does that for you, I guess. Not sure how well it would work, but we could try!"

"Like............ in my thoughts?"

She seemed thoughtful. "Not really . . . ? It'd be more physical than anything, and it'd work like a radio antenna- kind of."

"At least, that's what I'm thinking of doing right now."

Probably blood. And fire. And an absolute rejection of true society.

Rebus laughs. “As interesting though cliche those things are, I have a faster way.” Nanomachines knit a body together out of air, the head containing several soul containers and attractors. “That should let Ryss come back from the Land of Dreams, at least for a moment. I have a proposition for him.”

"But... it wouldn't just read my thoughts," he clarified. "Like, all of them. Even the ones I don't want you to read."

"Of course not. It'd say only what you want to tell me. Nothing else."

He hesitated.

"Okay," he agreed. "We can try it."

Not sure who you’re talking to

Could work…

The body shook, and then the eyes opened. A piece of toast fell out of the sky onto it.

Ryss groaned, brushing the toast away. “Hello?”

Rebus smirks at the silly Author who thinks himself concealed by the fourth wall. Then he smiles more welcomingly at Ryss, offering a handshake. “My name is Rebus. It’s interesting to meet you, Ryss.”

“I died- my author is dead- what is- who are- “

“Yes, I’ve heard you both are dead. Such a state seems to be less final than either of you assumed. I constructed you a body and retrieved your soul.” He smiles. “As for your final question, I am Rebus. Supposedly, you were able to overthrow your Author; I was curious about how such a thing could be done.”

"Alright. Give me a few minutes to work out how it works, now," she chuckled.

Can you hear me just fine? she asked.

He nodded. "I can hear you fine."

“It’s… complicated…”

"Huh. That's really interesting, actually . . ." She looked at him curiously.

"You must be susceptible to at least a little Narration, then. I don't know how you could hear me otherwise."

He frowned, alarmed. "That's.......... concerning. But--- but you can't make my heart explode or anything, right?"

Rebus laughs again. “Of course! If it wasn’t, the Authors would make it impossible, and I wouldn’t need your explanation.”

“Let me-“ Ryss takes a deep breath, “let me think. I’m… it’s not every day you come back…”

"I mean, maybe I could- but I'm not going to test it!" she reassured him quickly. "I would never do that."

"The thing is, I've never actually tried to Narrate anything about you before. I just assumed nothing would work, but Narrating my thoughts into other peoples' heads to communicate is just so intuitive for me that I never actually realized my Narration was working on you . . ." she paused, seeming troubled.

"And you were still able to send me some of your thoughts earlier- however scatterbrained they were . . . are you sure your tattoos don't fade?"

@Halcyon The Only important question; Bat’s Nullite tattoos don’t make him an Enuller right? But shouldn’t they still protect him from Narration?

He glanced at his arms in sudden panic. “Yes! See? They’re as black as ever……. I’ll try to reapply them tonight, though. Once we get back to shore…… aw, Narrators…”

They SHOULD, if working as intended and uninhibited by natural processes.

And no, they don’t make him an Ennuller.

Rebus nods. “That would imply a certain failure of self-preservation, yes. I’ll allow you to think - my Author is about to freeze me in time by getting on a plane.”
