"I don't know, I find this very productive." An ice cream cone appeared in her hand, and she began licking it. "Want one?"

“No,” Beosta mumbled. “Tan, I’m not in love with Shoe. He’s just a great person, okay? You know him better than I do— he’s not the type to get into relationships anyway. Right?”

Beosta was a lot more curious than she wanted to admit to herself.

"Well, I have a castle made entirely out of them!"

Bacon teleported them both to the castle to demonstrate.

"What do you suppose they're talking about, Shoe?" asked Bacon thoughtfully.

Tam shrugged, munching on her cone. "Wouldn't know. He was never in a relationship before . . . Ciara, and then I missed ten years of his life." She took another bite. "Speaking of which, he hasn't talked much about then, has he?" She looked towards where Shoe was conversing with several of the villagers.

Heheheh.

Hmm? Uh, I don't know. "Girl stuff" could be anything, I suppose.

She shook his head. “Not much. I found him traveling with Nogard. He saved me from a falling castle.” She paused. “Not a word,” she warned.

Tam closed her mouth obediently. She grinned and finished her cone.

"You should ask him about it. I'm curious."

Tam shrugged again. "Alright."

She patted Beosta on the shoulder and walked away. "Good luck."

Why was everyone so mean?

Beosta walked over to Shoe. "Sorry about that. What's up?"

Hey! Nothing much. Bacon's being weird again and the villagers are fine, if a little shaken. What did Tam want?

Beosta shrugged. "She asked how we know each other." She felt a little color rising to her face.

Shoe sighed. It's never that simple with her. What'd she really ask?

"She, uh... she asked if we're together," Beosta lied. "I don't get what this fascination with it is."

Shoe rolled his eyes. Of course she did, he sighed. Bacon has a similar idea, apparently.

Sorry 'bout that.

"Nah, it's okay. You need a hug, right?"

"That explains the splints. Didn't you stab him though?"

Subversion blinked innocently. "What? Of course not. I just happened to be holding my Narrationblade when he came flying into me and knocked me over. There was no time for me to react and dismiss it."

The text continued erasing itself. I said, get out of my volcano. It's mine.

The adventurer typed even faster, accelerating to his maximum speed. "Don't worry sir." He repeated, sweat starting to trickle down his face. "This is just a slight computer glitch."

"Oh. Er, you aren't still going to grab him, are you?"

"No. Just go land on the far side, we have a hangar that should be large enough." The General frowned down at the lava. "It seems my worries about that salesman's credentials were justified."

Onyx sighed. "It was a gift. From... the Narrator before me."

"Oh, from X? That makes sense. It's too bad, what happened to him. With the Witherlord, I mean. Tragic. Especially considering..." The Dreamsmith tapped his finger on the windowsill. "I've heard that there are groups working to bring about the Witherlord's return. Odd, isn't it? I would have thought the Witherlord was free to return whenever he wished." Out of the corner of his eye, he watched Onyx carefully. "I'm surprised he's been absent for so long."

"I'm sure you do for some reason," she dismissed, and gave him a hug.

Um . . . He hugged her back, very confused.

She squeezed him and then let him go. "So what should we do now? There's got to be something out there. Where do you think Cricket went?"

Onyx snorted. "They're wasting their time. The mantle has been banished far, far into the Void; they have no chance of bringing it back."

"He's back at the town, looking for you," said Bacon. "I went and rescued him."

Why not? Is it a secret?

Bacon shook the man's hand. "Absolutely, good sir! Tell me, what is your opinion on Bacon Sandwiches?"

"Hah!" declared Bacon. "I knew it!"

The bubble held firm against the Strands as the doctor continued to write, but she did speed up her pace.

This is your mind, she said. You have control. Can you restrain... whatever it is?

Tenth tried, though it had no effect. The Strands tried more, instead. The mist also picked up, throwing itself against the Strands. As the two collided, both turned charcoal black at their intersection.

"To be clear, I am not a leader."

Bacon teleported them back to the town.
