"Ow," said Bacon absently. "Hey, Beosta, who are we looking for again?"

"Well, the last Narrator to lose their powers in such a way was able to petition Onyx to recover it... but that was when Onyx was receiving visitors. If he won't even see you..." the inspector shook his head. "As long as Onyx remains reclusive, I don't think it's possible."

“Have we not just just proved ourselves to him?”

They appeared simply made and colorfully painted. A young man of perhaps twenty, or perhaps thirty, stood at the front of the wagons. No others were visible, nor did there seem to be any animal pulling the wagons.

Tam and Shoe stepped through the portal.

"What kind of favor?" Tam asked Beosta.

"I am certain that Onyx does not desire more power," explained the inspector further. "He has plenty of that already..."

“I am not saying that he desires power, but instead that we have earned an audience.”

”What does he want, then? To be left alone, like a petulant child running away from duty? There are people dependent on him.”

Cricket stood, looking around, shivering in the cold. "Bacon! Conjure me a cloak, please?" he said calling out to the Bard.

"I seek council with you. I have weapons enough, though new ones never hurt. The Brave Adventurer speaks of Plotblades dangerous enough to tear the thread apart. He says the Great Wizard was a traitor to the Brave Adventurers, that he seeks the Plotblades for personal gain. The Brave Adventurer accused him of sending letters to you asking you to forge the Blades together. Did he? And is he intent on personal power?"

The Dreamsmith set aside his work and gave Platypus his full attention, anvil fading into the background. “He did send letters asking for my aid, but I cannot say whether he intends to claim the Blades for himself. Even if does not intend to, he may end up claiming one of them. Even I am not sure that I could resist the temptation, if the Blades were brought to me.”

"Uh... he talks. He looks like a normal squirrel. I think he accidentally got teleported to the Council of the Brave Adventurers, which is why I ask you. Also, did you know the former Brave Adventurer personally?"

“Ah, one of the intruders? I’ve no clue where he is.” The Brave Adventurer smiled in a trustworthy-seeming way. “I’ll be sure to tell you if I find him. And of course I knew my predecessor personally. We were quite close before his retirement.”

"Bacon the Bard," declared Bacon, accepting the handshake with a whoopee cushion in his palm. "You're a villain, right?"

The Brave Adventurer’s smile wavered for an instant. “Depends on your point of view I suppose. But I wouldn’t say so.”

Nogard set her down gently. "I'm glad. I... I'm glad. Er, you're not concussed, are you?"

“Hopefully not.” Subversion rose to her feet smoothly, brushing hair out of her face. “I didn’t get hit that hard.”

Selppaenip thought on this for a moment. "Should we... return to the battlefield to reunite with our allies?"

… considered this. “Probably not.” He finally said. “I suspect there’d be a trap waiting for us. But we should try to meet up with the others.”

Back at the battlefield

TP looked around to see if he could find where the Great Wizard had gone.
