"Certainly!" Sequence gave a little bow.

"Regrouping, yes... I will see what I can do. Is there anybody who needs assistance sooner than others?"

"Hmm. Yrank and Sasha, I think, have been left somewhat adrift. They're with another one of my forms, but I wouldn't count on me for anything."

"Understood! Before I go, I have one more question. Why do we oppose the Brave Adventurer and his army?"

As an organization they are pretty Lawful Good, but there's room in the lore for a villain.  What do you have in mind?

No, she wrote automatically.

Then she realized she actually kind of did.

Oh well. It was too late now.

Okay. If you're sure.

She stared at the paper, then turned away.

"I don't want to forget you."

It took her a minute to realize that the soft words had come out of her mouth. She dug her fingernails into her palms, eyes filling up with tears again. Stop it! Just stop! What is WRONG with you lately?

"All about these two new dangerous Plotblades. The Great Wizard- and by extension, our Bravest Expeditioners - thinks no one should have them. The Brave Adventurers think otherwise."

"Seems fair enough! I'll go try to find Yrank and Sasha, though first, I think I'll pay the Brave Adventurer a visit! Just to hear him out, y'know? It's only fair. Bye bye!"

Sequence spun in a circle and vanished in a puff of smoke before Bacon could respond, as she was partially worried he'd object. She couldn't be certain about how biased he might be.

Sequence, not particularly wanting to intrude, appeared somewhere adjacent to the Brave Adventurer's approximate location, and sent out a message into the universe.

Hello, Brave Adventurer! I am the Narrator Sequence, and I wish to meet with you! It has come to my attention that there is a conflict in the Thread, and I'm interested in helping it reach a relatively peaceful conclusion. I'd like to hear out the motivations of all the sides involved, as a start. Please meet with me when you can!

Sincerely, Sequence

Everything that happened since they recruited us. We'd just go back to our home worlds and forget about anything else.

A droplet landed on the page. Beosta startled upright, then wiped her eyes dry and scolded herself.

For a moment, Shoe just stared at the paper. Then he looked at Beosta, then back at the paper.

Your school? he shook his head, that's horrible!

It makes sense. I wouldn't want to go home and remember that I failed.

But then she'd forget how this felt--- to sit together and write messages back and forth and smile.

But you wouldn't be just forgetting that you failed, you be forgetting everything! He shook his head at the absurdity of it.

That's for the best. It might sound ridiculous, but it's for the best.

But . . . why? I don't understand why you'd have to lose your memories if you fail.

Because it’s safer for them. And it’s better for us.

“Am I doing it?” She frowned. “Maybe.” She strained her mind, and all the Red bled out of Gail, including any that was there beforehand.
