NeutroniumAlchemist he/him Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 I just wanna say how much I have come to love the Shallan chapters in Oathbringer, they are really just so much fun. Such interesting character development is going on that I was happy today when the Kaladin chapter was so short, because that must mean more of the huge wall of text on my page must belong to the upcoming Shallan chapter. Trading potential new info on the voidbringers for a chapter mostly containing inner monologue from Shallan is not something I thought I would have done before starting Oathbringer. Not so anymore; broken Shallan, here weee GO! Choo Choo! 1
The Invested Beard Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 I'd put Dalinar's present day chapters ahead of Shallan's but that's just because I love all the juicy cosmere/worldbuilding tidbits we've been getting. But yeah I do like the the relationship building we've been getting with Shallan and Adolin. No mating!

I am really enjoying Shallan's arc here. A little bit of dark and scary peaking in and we haven't even gotten to Mraize yet, let alone a Jasnah reunion!
kiapet Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 This is interesting, because I've found I like Shallan's chapters the least. Her losing herself is really uncomfortable and painful to read, a lot like Kaladin's chapters in WoR. Of course, similarly to Kaladin in WoR I think Shallan needs to go through this and come out the other side, so I definitely don't think they're badly done or anything and I can see why others would like them. It's cool that different chapters can appeal to different people! 1
Toaster Retribution he/him Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 I have liked her chapters so far, but with Mraize back in the picture, it will be really fun. This far, current Dalinars chapters have been my favorites, with Kaladin being my least favorite, most likely because he is isolated from all the characters, and all the things that I find most interesting. No one is boring to read though, by any means, and the Kaladin chapters are good, especially when it comes to morality, and right and wrong, and such stuff. That is where Kaladin tends to shine most anyway, so its not surprising. I just wish he had a fun side-character with him (not overly fond of Sylphrenia).
Goatbringer he/him Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 I'll say that I like the flashbacks least of all. I know they're integral to the overall telling of the story, and definitely in rereads of WoK and WoR I've enjoyed the flashbacks immensely compared to my first readthroughs, but when I'm reading it for the first time I find that they pull me out of the current narrative for the time being. Especially with Dalinar's chapters being much older. I'm wanting to see what happens with the voidbringers or where Jasnah is at or who or what is making these copycat murders. The flashbacks - while I accept them as necessary! - always seem jarring and pull me out of the narrative. I will concur generally with this topic though. I like Shallan's chapters as she's becoming more comfortable with her wit and charm around Adolin and others but at the same time becoming more psychologically unhinged. Really cool contrast that I'm enjoying. That being said, of the three mains here I don't actually dislike Dalinar's or Kaladin's chapters. I'm just happy I get to read some before November 14th! 1
+eveorjoy she/her Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Kaladin remains my favorite, but I am a Kaladin fan girl. Shallan is my second favorite though and always has been. I feel bad that this is Dalinar's book and yet his chapter's remain my least favorite. Oh well.
Dreamstorm Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Dalinar's flashback chapter this week might be my favorite chapter so far I read the transcription from a reading and so was waiting for it, but I don't know what it is about it, but I find it hilarious and also quite informative (in a less gruesome way) about the past nature of Dalinar, Navani, Sadeas and Ialai. I'm finding myself loving the Sadeas/Ialai connection in a way I didn't in WoK and WoR (they weren't on our side!) and am wondering if we may get a bit of a THR redemption for one of both of them... (or I may just hope we do ) Overall this week made my dying for more flashback Dalinar (I haven't read Unfettered so don't know the next flashback chapter ), dying for more Shallan/Adolin/Ialai, and well, hoping Kaladin moves at some point. (I could take or leave modern day Dalinar though. Too much set-up.)
StormingTexan he/him Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 @Goatbringer I totally agree about the flashback chapters taking you out of the narrative. I think it is especially bad reading it like we are 3 chapters at a time. That being said of the flashback chapters from the 3 books I find Dalinar's the most interesting. Shallan became my favorite main character in WoR and Oathbringer has only strengthened that feeling. I think she is the most interesting main character and actually like the dark implementations of her actions/personalities. I will say I usually prefer gray characters instead of Black and White (which is why I probably do not like Kaladin that much).

That's an understatement... We're potentially getting into some very dark and very scary stuff, haha. I've really enjoyed the Shallan chapters, but hers feel like the calm before the storm to me. Like, everything is light and happy now, but there is something very, very bad for her on the horizon.
