In the chart in the back of the book, the gemstone corresponding to Tanat is a topaz. This is a strange coincidence, since one of Hoid's oldest pseudonyms is "Topaz", and that these gemstones and their Soulcasting properties are seemingly arbitrarily linked to each Herald. What do you guys think this means? Did Hoid have a hand in Talanel's death during the Final Desolation, to ensure that not all of the Heralds would abandon the Oathpact, and Odium wouldn't be freed? Hoid would probably be around for such an important event.

Topaz was a name Hoid used pre-Shattering and we know that at that event he was know to the Vessels by yet another name. The Desolations far postdate that. It's almost certainly a coincidence.

Hoid killing Taln is interesting, and eould be a cool twist. I do think Topaz is a coincidence though.

Were did we learn about Hoid being Topaz btw? Can someone point me to a source?

I think it's from Dragonsteel. Not entirely sure.

Here's where that info may have come from:

QUESTION

During this same scene, Hoid mentions that he'd been named after a rock, a very beautiful one. Was this a reference to Dragonsteel? When he had the name Topaz?

BRANDON SANDERSON

Yes

I always imagined that the gemstones associated with each Herald were an offshoot of the colors of glyphs and markings on the blades and armor of the KR that had each Herald as a Patron.  Chicken-egg discussion could ensue, of course.
