Popular Post FiveLate
What follows is my current theory on how the 10 Heralds became the 10 fool's through the coarse of the Desolations. I will update this post as it evolves. I will try to provide links to all WOB. Quotes will come from the kindle versions of the books via cut and paste. I will list book, chapter, and location number. Bold will be my emphasis. Italics will be possible contradictory evidence. Number 18 here Spoiler NTERVIEW: Mar 29th, 2014 WOR Signing Report - Herowannabe (Verbatim) QUESTION Is that theory correct where the Heralds are kind of reversed now, where they're going against their [attributes]. BRANDON SANDERSON RAFO From Reddit Fantasy Bookclub Q&A with Brandon Sanderson Feb 28th, 2011 Spoiler The number 10 seems to be a recurring theme in this world. Are the Ten Fools the antithesis of the ten orders of the Knights Radiant? BRANDON SANDERSON First Question: Yes, ten is a number of mythological import in the world. The Ten Fools are, essentially, the opposites of the Ten Heralds—who each represented an ideal. (Those ideals were later adopted by the orders of Knights Radiant, so yes, there is a connection—but there's a step between them.) We will start with this quote which shows us all Heralds were in WOK. Spoiler QUESTION Is the Palanaeum named for Palah? BRANDON SANDERSON Yes. In fact, it was named based on—it was Greek in our world—the Athenaeum? It was based off of that. WETLANDER Did we see Palah? BRANDON SANDERSON I believe every one of the Heralds is mentioned or shown somewhere in the first book. WETLANDER Someone was wondering whether the old woman who was wandering around the Palanaeum was her. BRANDON SANDERSON That is a very good guess. I won't say specifically, because some of them are intended to be more obvious and some of them are intended to be red herrings. So, that was a very good guess. First, the Desolations occurred when the Heralds were sent back to Roshar after one of them broke under the torture of Odium. Second, each Herald is associated with a primary and secondary Divine Attribute. (Possibly primary from Honor, Secondary from Cultivation?) Third, the torture does not happen in the physical realm. It occurs in either the cognitive, or more likely the spiritual realm. Fourth, when Odium breaks a Herald, he is literally breaking part of that Heralds spiritual connection to the Divine Attribute. Fifth, Odium's goal was to break all the Heralds and bring about the the Everstorm, allowing him to shatter Honor and Cultivation. Sixth, breaking the Divine Attributes shifted them towards something more compatible with Odium and less compatible with Honor. This resulted in the attributes associated with the 10 Fool's. Number 19 in this WOB, says each is uniquely insane. Spoiler CCQ Did Ishar intentionally deceive Nalan or does Ishar have bad info that he passed on? BRANDON SANDERSON Yes and no. All of the heralds are insane. CCQ So I clarified the question to being did Ishar know that he was lying to Nalan BRANDON SANDERSON got a RAFO but he added something that seemed to mean that Ishar could perhaps see the future and that each insanity was unique and that uniqueness played a part in the info. Not really sure on the last part. NOTE: One of the biggliest issues with this theory is not knowing the 10 Fools attributes. Two Fools are named. Two have attributes. Cabine - He acts like a child although he is an adult. TWOK chapter 37, page 593, location 10668 Spoiler Kal leaned back, breathing in and out. He felt like one of the ten fools—specifically Cabine, who acted like a child though he was adult. But what was he to think of Lirin’s actions? Eshu - He speaks of things he does not understand in front of those who do. WOR chapter 71, page 593, location 16877 Spoiler Kaladin felt like one of the ten fools. Actually, he felt like all of them. Ten times an idiot. But most specifically Eshu, who spoke of things he did not understand in front of those who did. One issue I have here is that the 2 Heralds I would link these two too are both female. Paliah and Battar. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1) We have a WOB on this. Not a confirmation, but along those lines. Spoiler AHOYMATEY Is a Desolation caused when a Herald breaks under torture? BRANDON SANDERSON This person is asking the right kinds of questions. 2) Herald. Primary Divine Attribute. Secondary Divine Attribute. Jezrien. Protecting. Leading Nale. Just. Confident Chanarach. Brave. Obedient Vedel. Loving. Healing Paliah. Learned. Giving Shalash. Creative. Honest Battar. Wise. Careful Kalak. Resolute. Builder Talenel. Dependable. Resourceful Ishar. Pious. Guiding 3) Since Odium was attempting to break the Heralds focus on their Divine Attribute, the torture most likely took place in the spiritual realm. The spren would probably know something if it took place in the cognitive realm. One thing pointing to the cognitive realm though is the fact that Taln appeared covered in condensation much like a shardblade. 4) By breaking the Herald, Odium shifted their Primary attribute to closer align with his shard and align less with Honors. This usually resulted in an almost inversion of the attribute. SPECIFICALLY I THINK ONLY THE PRIMARY ATTRIBUTE WAS BROKEN/TWISTED. Below I will show what I think the attribute shifted to after the Devine attribute. Herald. Primary Divine Attribute. Secondary Divine Attribute. Jezrien. Protecting. (Submission) Leading Nale. Just. (Arbitrary)(Judgement) Confident Chanarach. Brave. Obedient Vedel. Loving. Healing Paliah. Learned. Giving Shalash. Creative. (Destructive) Honest Battar. Wise. Careful Kalak. Resolute. (Weak-willed) Builder Talenel. Dependable. (Erratic) Resourceful Ishar. Pious. (Traitorous) Guiding These are based off of what we have seen or heard in the books so far. These are not perfect words, but the 17th shard manymind will probably come up with better. There are some subtle indications that only 9 of the 10 fool's have a strong history or mythology. Here is one concerning Lyft and pancakes. I think I subconsciously connected Lyft's silly quest to eat all 10 Pancakes with the 10 fool's. Research could not find a direct correlation. Spoiler The scribe rolled her eyes, but wrote it. Lift nodded, finishing off the last pancake, a type with a real thick, almost mealy texture. “Okay,” she proclaimed, standing up. “That’s nine. What’s the last one? I’m ready.” “The last one?” the Stump asked. “Ten types of pancakes,” Lift said. “It’s why I came to this starvin’ city. I’ve had nine now. Where’s the last one?” “The tenth is dedicated to Tashi,” the scribe said absently as she wrote. “It is more a thought than a real entity. We bake nine, and leave the last in memory of Him.” “Wait,” Lift said. “So there’s only nine?” “Yes.” “You all lied to me?” “Not in so much—” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jezrien gives up on protecting humanity personally, submits to the Will of the group, and sacrifices Talenel to uphold the entire oathpact. Spoiler Better that one man should suffer than ten," Jezrien whispered. He seemed so cold. Like a shadow caused by heat and light falling on someone honourable and true, casting this black imitation behind. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Nale shifts from Just- working within the accepted standards of right and wrong to Arbitrary- following the rule of law without regards to morality.....he goes straight lawful evil. From Edgedancer Chapter 9, page 596 Arcanum Unbound, location 8565 Spoiler Your minds cannot be trusted. Even my mind—especially my mind—cannot be trusted. “I have given you enough help. You have my blessing and you have our commission granting us authority to act in this city. You will find the Surgebinder, you will discover their sins, and you will bring them judgment. In the name of all Roshar.” Judgement not Justice. From Edgedancer Chapter 9, page 596 Arcanum Unbound, location 8565 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Shalash is pretty clear with her running around destroying art, and significantly art that depicts her and other heralds. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kalak is in no way resolute when Jezrien meets him. He is in fact very weak willed, confessing that he cannot go back. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Talenel (if it really is him) comes back a broken man, highly erratic and unable to perform his duties as the Herald of War. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ishar formed the Knights Radiant originally, he led the Bondsmiths. He was also the one who promulgated the traitorous idea that 1 Herald could support the Oathpact. From Edgedancer: Spoiler “But…” said the male initiate. “Is it really … I mean, shouldn’t we want them to return, so we won’t be the only order of Knights Radiant?” “Unfortunately, no,” Darkness said. “I once thought as you, but Ishar made the truth clear to me. If the bonds between men and spren are reignited, then men will naturally discover the greater power of the oaths. Without Honor to regulate this, there is a small chance that what comes next will allow the Voidbringers to again make the jump between worlds. That would cause a Desolation, and even a small chance that the world will be destroyed is a risk that we cannot take. Absolute fidelity to the mission Ishar gave us—the greater law of protecting Roshar—is required.” And Spoiler “A fluke,” Darkness said, his voice firm. “I contacted Ishar, and he assured me it is so. What you saw are a few listeners who remain from the old days, ones free to use the old forms. They summoned a cluster of Voidspren. We’ve found remnants of them on Roshar before, hiding.” And Spoiler “The Voidbringers have not returned,” Darkness said firmly. “Ishar has promised it, and he will not lie. We must do our duty. You are questioning, Szeth-son-Neturo. This is not good; this is weakness. To question is to accept a descent into inactivity. The only path to sanity and action is to choose a code and to follow it. This is why I came to you in the first place.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5) We know there were not literally 99 desolation. I suspect there were 9. One each time Odium broke a Herald. Then the next time that Herald would not be tortured as hard so that about her would break first. Nine also being the number of Odium I believe would work well with this. After the Oathpact was discarded, Odium let humanity rewrite Roshar's history and religion in preparation for the Final Desolation. Spoiler Quote SHAWN M. HALVERSON (HTTPS://WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/GROUPS/270545169744383/PERMALINK/731811053617790/) So I just got back from the book signing Brandon held today, I asked him about the time between each of the original 99 desolations. BRANDON SANDERSON It turns out that the number 99 in the stories was made up, and that there were much fewer of them. He also then stated that the cosmere runs along a 10,000 year gap and that Roshar falls right into the middle of the timeline. He ended with "That should give you a perspective of the timeline and events of the desolations". I figured that if anyone wanted to know a bit more of Roshar's history they might find this interesting Source ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6) The corruption of the 9 Heralds weakened Honor, but the Knights Radiant provided some support, until the Day of Requience when they abandoned all their oaths. Honor shattered shortly after. I have to go back and find some more quotes and WOB to fully support some of this, but I will edit them in as I find them. Andy92
I had wondered in the past of there was something important with Odium's number being 9 and having 9 of the Herlads abandon the Oathpact. I do think there may be some merit to the idea of Odium "breaking" each of the Heralds with a certain intent behind manipulating them in the process. PallonianFire he/him
I really, really like this theory. I hadn't seen before what Odium's breaking of a Herald meant (that it breaks their Divine Attribute), but knowing that now, I think there are definitely parallels to be drawn from those we've seen so far. What's a Seawolf?
I really like this theory, especially because it runs counter to the general idea that the heralds started becoming the opposite of their oaths because they abandoned the oathpact. It would be neat if it was in fact Odium who caused this change in order to break them. I like it a lot. Don't have much to add except spitballing on who some of the unknown heralds are masquerading as: (I have no idea what the physical age/appearance of the heralds are supposed to be, so that may immediately kill some of this baseless speculation) Vedel. Loving. Healing -Opposite of healing would be hurting/killing. Natural thought is the opposite of loving in hating, but that's Odium's domain. An interesting synonym for loving outside the normal inclination is devoted/loyal. An opposite of devoted/loyal/healing that springs to mind would be an assassin for hire. I know I've seen some theories that Liss (Jasnah WoR prologue) is a radiant, can't remember the conclusion but it fits in this baseless theorymongering. Plus, her nickname is the Weeper. That's very opposite of Loving/Healing if you ask me. Paliah. Learned. Giving -Probably wayyyyy off base with this one (for some reason I think Paliah may be one of the elderly looking heralds?) but the opposite of learned/giving sounds a lot like what Elhokar's wife is doing back home. (Admittedly it's been a while since I've read that passage.) We just have one interlude from a separate POV and Jasnah's unease to go off, but hey, just throwing out ideas. FiveLate
One thing I did not make clear above. For all the Heralds I could match in the books, it was always the primary attribute that seemed to be "broken". Now, I am wondering if I can associate the primary attributes with Honor and the Secondary with Cultivation...... Quote I hadn't seen before what Odium's breaking of a Herald meant (that it breaks their Divine Attribute), but knowing that now, I think there are definitely parallels to be drawn from those we've seen so far. That is speculation on my part, not proven. Edited June 8, 2017 by FiveLate Clarification

Ok, so I did some searching on the forums, because our 3 MIA Heralds are not even mentioned in Pagerunner's Reddit database or Theoryland. And here's what I've learned so far. Battar: We are all fools. Quote Quote Chrono: Battar is mentioned in one of Dalinar's visions. IIRC, it was the one where the two KR come to the small village to fight the Midnight Essence. I don't have my copy of TWOK with me, but I do remember that Taffa (the woman that the voice speaks through at the end of the vision) says something along the lines of "Sweet wisdom of Battar!" as they're running from the Midnight Essence. Not much to go on, but she is mentioned. As for the others, I have no idea. Argent: You are actually spot on. That's exactly what she says. Paliah: I found it. @Calderis & @Extesian Quote The Sovereign: There is a scene in WoK where Shallan comments on seeing someone wandering the stacks of the Palanaeum, Brandon has confirmed this is indeed Paliah. WoB referencing this from 2013; Brandon confirmed this theory was actually correct in person for me last year at a signing when I brought it up to him:The Sovereign: The inside cover of my Bands of Mourning Copy <3. A friend is borrowing my Era 2 books at the moment but I'll take a picture of it when I get it back. Chana: Not a theory so much as a potential hint, there is no other mention of her on the forums that doesn't also refer to WoR. Quote Frostlander: Chana is invoked when there is mothering involved. Both quotes in WoR: Dalinar on Navani: Quote The mother axehound had finally emerged. Shallan was apparently no longer an outsider, but one of Navani’s clutch— and Chana help the man or woman who stood between Navani and one of her own. Navani on Jasnah: Quote Chana knows, I wondered sometimes how I raised that child without strangling her. By age six, she was pointing out my logical fallacies as I tried to get her to go to bed on time. Other Fan Theories that I liked: One, Two. Quote Little Wilson: The other name that's struck an oddity is the Shin female scholar--Shauka-daughter-Hasweth. Could've been a name this particular Herald went by a few thousand years ago, when she disguised herself as a Shin scholar and wrote a philosophy book. Now, maybe Shauka-daughter-Hasweth was just an oddity among her people when she lived and considering her to be a Herald is preposterous. Maybe she's dead now. It was thousands of years ago. And if she is, then clearly she's not a Herald. And even if she is a Herald, and therefore not dead, she's surely not going by the name of Shauka-daughter-Hasweth. But she's probably still with the Shin. I think it's an idea. And we're severely lacking on guesses on the female Herald side of things. Quote Fifth of Daybreak: I'm a big fan of the theory that the heralds are changing into either the ten fools or perversions of themselves. So what if Aesudan and Lhan are both heralds? Aesudan could be Paliah, and her perversion is surrounding herself with Ardent who are sycophants, not promoting her learning, and by hoarding the food that spoils, instead of giving it.
