Will you read ahead in Words of Radiance?

  1. 1. Will you skip ahead in Words of Radiance? If you will, where will you start?

    • No. I didn't read the excerpts from Tor and I avoided spoilers. The whole book will be fresh to me and I don't need to skip ahead.
    • No. Even though I read all the excerpts on Tor, I prefer to read the story in order.
    • Yes. I'm going to start at Chapter 7. What happened to Shallan and Jasnah?
    • Yes. I can't believe they ended chapter twelve where they did. I'm skipping to the next Kaladin chapter as soon as I get my hands on the book.
    • Yes. I want to read the Lift's interlude first, because it is just awesome.
    • Yes. I want to read Ym's interlude first, because I want to know how it ends.
    • Yes. I want to read the rest of Taravangian's interlude first. I'm dying to know what Tor left out.
    • Yes. I'm going to read the ending first, because I like to know where the story is going.

I'll read WoR from the beginning, though I've read the excerpts and the readings. As others said, my first read through will be faster than the re-read. :)

I plan to start at Chapter 7, skip the other Chapters that have already been released, finish the story, and then reread again straight through, this time starting from the Prologue.  I’ll check out the endpages (end paper?) and the like, but I don’t plan to read the Ars Arcanum until I’m finished with the book.

As Word of Peter has shown, Tor has released the final versions of each of those Chapters, so I’m not worried about missing anything.

And I’ve probably read each of the early releases at least 4-5 times each by now...  :D

I hope you realize that nobody is going to vote for the first option since no one who hasn't read the excerpts should be on this forum...

I haven't read the excerpts.

I'm going to try and read the book straight through, but probably fail and skip ahead to the chapters that were unavailable on Tor. This is, of course, pending on if I feel like I did well on the ACT. If I feel good, I'll read the book in order. If I feel bad, straight to Chapter 7, no remorse.

She put the second in place of the first. It doesn't matter what she did with the first envelope after that.

Doesn't matter?

That could be the evidence Darkness needs to kill her.

I said that I will skip ahead to the next Kaladin chapter, but honestly I'll probably skim the other chapters that were skipped just to see their main character.

No, you know what, I'll probably just read the chapters that were skipped ... while doing selective rereads of WoK, I've noticed the chapters are pretty interrelated, and I don't want to miss anything important.   For example, when rereading just the Kaladin chapters, it definitely calls attention to the fact that I was missing important subjects that were presented in the Dalinary chapters.  So, I'll go change my vote now :).

I took 3 days off of work so I can go to the midnight release and then sit down and read the book all the way through at my leisure. Though it will probably end up being non-stop from start to finish. Nonetheless, no skipping, just because I want to read everything straight through, and even if I re-read the excerpts from TOR while I'm waiting/at the signing, I'll still get interrupted because of having to drive home for an hour after picking up the book before I can start reading in earnest.

I will read from the beginning. I dont start skimming or skipping until the 4th or 5th re read typically.

Ive lost count of my Epic Fantasy re-reads, Sanderson will definitely earn a spot on the uncountable re-reads shelf With Jordan, Eddings, Card, Martin, Goodkind and King

Yes. The artwork will have some spoilers. Brandon even put a spoiler warning in the Table of Contents right in front of the list of artwork. It's best just to see the artwork in order without looking at it ahead of time.

The Ars Arcanum will have some spoilers too, and there's no particular reason to look at the Ars Arcanum while you're reading the book.

Thanks, I'm glad I asked!

You have got to have some amazing self-control to be in this forum and NOT read the excerpts, or maybe just a tad masochistic.

I do love Brandon's books but I have very little interest in reading an excerpt from a yet to be released book. There is a reason the book is released as a whole and I feel like reading excerpts takes away from this. Of course I think it is awesome that the previews are released just isn't for me.

And I already know it will be awesome so I need no confirmation on that :)

Edit: Sorry if this came across as a little strong. I am absolutely all for excerpts and previews being released it drums up hype and publicity, and gives us fans something to chew over while we wait. Just for me personally I feel it would negatively impact my reading of the book when it arrives but that is just me.

It's nice to be in a state of mind where you can refuse to read the excerpt of a much awaited book. That's some strong EQ right there!

In my case I refused to read the last 3 books of WoT, until way later... when I had to accept that RJ is really gone and didn't leave any secret manuscripts. :P  I love how Sanderson rescued the saga. It could not have been easy, and yet he made it look effortless and improved on it even! I get how you just know that it will be awesome and worth the wait.

Oh but the pain of waiting.

Brandon has a sister-in-law who reads the endings first.

I have several friends who do this. That's why I added it to the pole.

I plan on reading it without skipping. It helps me get the flow of the story better that way. Actually, I'm going to pace my latest reread of TWoK so that I finish just in time to start WoR.

Note to self: do not look at the Ars Arcanum till the end. I was wondering about that. Now that I think about it, that will be even more tempting than skipping ahead. I want to know how stuff works!

I'll read all the preview chapters the day before my book arrives, and when it does, I'm going for the next Kal chapter, and after that I'll go back to 7, then 11, then 13, and 15, from there I'll go through them in order. :)

LOL this.   You said it much clearer than I did :)

Hehehe, you know you are desperate for a book to come out, when you still have almost 1 month of waiting, and you already have a plan on how to read it!

Pfft. Noobs read excerpts. All of the awesome people wait until they have the entire book in hand.

I've seen this question on other forums for other books. And I didn't read through the 3 pages of posts, but I honestly can't fathom skipping to the end. The whole idea seems to fit somewhere on the spectrum between uncomfortably abnormal and downright heretical to me.

I plan on getting the book if there is a midnight release near me. I then will spend all night or the next day reading it. I can finish it in a day. and a little bit. I am skipping that day at school to read it. Then the next night I am driving 4 hours in heavy LA traffic (yes there is a difference) to be at Brandon's next signing having already read the book to ask him questions. Epic plan!
