Any Alpha or Beta Readers on Here?

I have a humble request of any alpha or beta readers on here.  As people with a slight influence on Brandon's work, can you all work together to get him to stop having Lift say "awesomeness"? I love his writing and his books, but that word is dreadful. It doesn't so much pull me out of the story as much as jerks me out of the story, flings me across the room and bangs my head against a wall.

i mean... it makes sence for her to call it that ,considering  her lack of knoledge on the subject plus her disregard to any sort of mystisism , makes awesomeness a reasonable name

buuuuuut i would have to agree that i am not a big fan of the word and it does kinda ruin the emmersion

First time I've ever used negative rep on here. Get over yourself.

Also, changing it now would be even worse because it creates a giant inconsistency in the story, which is a lot worse for immersion. Perhaps that when she get more in contact with other radiants she will be calling it differently, right now the only one who can tell her about it is Wyndle, whom she doesn't listen to.

There are beta readers here.

I can understand if it is not something to your taste but I feel it evokes who Lift is. It's fitting. She has a lot of growth to do. She's young now. Why not wait and see?

I'ma upvote the OP, just because seeing negative vote counts makes me sad.

On a more relevant note, I also don't like the term "awesomeness", as it the word kinda sticks out like a sore thumb in a Sanderson Novel, but I've learned to accept it :)

I don't really like Lift as a character, and while the OP could have been stated better it does have a point. I'm upvoting it because I don't think any user should get that much bad rep from a poorly-phrased post.

I love Lift as she is. It would get old if she doesn't develop, but I have no doubt whatsoever that she will

"Awesomeness" was unpleasantly jarring. I get what Brandon was trying to do with it, an it is fantastic in a way. But it certainly jerked me out of Roshar on the first read (and still does somewhat). But I think it's too late to change abruptly. You can't just leave it out and pretend it never happened. That would be even more awkward now.

Also, I don't suspect we'll see a whole lot of Lift between now and book 6. I'd guess we'll have one... maybe two interludes from her in the next three books.

It is just part of Brandon's narrative process: he does include modern day vocabulary within this stories. Lift's "awesomeness" is meant to indicate she is a young, immature character who thinks herself "too cool for the crowd" which certainly is a trait found in many modern days young teenagers. We all had our phase were we thought we just had more style then we really did: likely our older relatives rolled down their eyes on us. Also, teenagers of all ages and times have had their own particular vocabulary, words such as "cool" and "yo man" (alright I am old, for disclosure here, my teenage vocabulary is outdated by a two decades ) and such have been used in order to differentiate themselves from their "boring" parents, in an endeavor to carve themselves an identity.

With Lift, I get the feeling Brandon was playing with those characteristic and yes, he borrowed within our world to craft out her vocabulary. We also see, in Edgedancer, how Lift is still forming her identity, not really being sure who she ought to be which are normal thoughts to have for individuals within her age frame. She is young enough to be a more or less blank plate, so how Brandon tackled her definitely works. Writing the "searching for one self" story arc with an older character, one having gone through his/her teenage years without truly finding his/her own voice would yield a very different narrative process. Brandon is smart enough to know the difference.

Obviously, not everyone enjoys young and immature characters, but I wouldn't want Brandon to change his wording because a few fans think it is ill-placed.

I would also point out calling out for Beta/Alpha readers to peer-pressured Brandon into changing his sentences to please a given's individual is extremely rude. You might say the wording annoys you, you might start a discussion as to whether or not the word awesome should be use, you might even hope Brandon will read it and conclude you are right, thus changing his wording, but you can't ask people to send a negative critic on your behalf.

This being said, Brandon also used the word "alien" which made my eyebrow crooked, but the word, in itself, doesn't have to refer to extra-terrestrial life, so the use is sound, just unexpected.

Everyone is entitled to their view. I love Lift and I love awesomeness. Luckily it's irrelevant. We take ourselves waaay too seriously here if we think that Brandon will not only change his writing style but actually go back and change published books just because some fans ask him to. He has far too many fans and far too much integrity to do that. We're so lucky that we have an author that listens or responds to us at all :)

I down-voted initially and then repented of my turd-ness and undid the down-vote. However, I do disagree heartily with @Jsin82 about the place of "awesomeness" in SA. I actually agree that the word is disruptive of the typical SA tone but that is characteristic of all of Lift's POVs (not just the word) and I suspect that we will learn more about Lift's character that justifies her phraseology and person not fitting comfortably in the story like the rest of the characters.

Lift is just storming awesome, and everything she does is awesome, and in order to make her an awesome character, Brandon Sanderson has do his awesome things, let Lift do awesome things, and she'll become........awesome.

Man, that word just slides on the tongue.
