Zathoth Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 I should be more upset as Harry Potter is how I learned to read, but this is just funny to me, a groaning, so bad it is hilarious kind of funny, but still funny.

Same here. It was the first thing I had to hide from my parents, the first series I smuggled home in my book bag, the first movie I snuck out to see, but I can't be angry. Everything—the plot, the character assassination, the horrible worldbuilding—it's all just so bad that I can't even take it seriously as a threat to canon, even though it is canon.

I also have some fond memories of the books, my father always used to read them to me. I think my humor at the situation has been fairly obvious. 1 minute ago, TwiLyghtSansSparkles said: Same here. And now I also know that the books planted the seeds for Twi rebelling against her personal dictators, it did so much good.

Like I've said before: Im just pretending everything after the last chapter, including the epilogue never happened. Rowling hasnt done anything good with the series since then. The books are canon, everything after is slightly more official fan fiction. 1

You cant convince me Harry has a horrible naming sense DX That he married Ginny, fine, but his kids are named James and Fred. Or something like that... ok I can accept that James's middle name is Albus, but thats as far as I'm going.
ParadoxicalZen he/him Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 At a bit of an impasse; sorely in need of work but Adelaide is dry as, so I'm contemplating heading to the east coast as its more likely to have job opportunities....but idk whether to trymelb first as I can catch up with friends and try there first but I'm not in position so waste money on travel expenses. Any thoughts?

They died like heroes." I find it very hard to believe that Ginny thought "Albus Severus" was a more important name than something honoring those legendary uncles of hers.

She's done her job as the love interest, love interests dont exist after that. At least that is the mildly horrifying meta-explaination for it. Remember kids: If you find yourself in a story; don't be the love interest.

You'll either be turned into a trophy or a villain... sometimes both. Just start out being the crazy stalker, that way you at least know what you've comming.

Oversleep Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 I know I'm throwing a grenade into a nest of hornets... but what is so bad about the Epilogue?

For one, it wasn't written after DH; Rowling wrote it around the same time she wrote CoS, and it shows in the quality of writing. Some readers found the names of Harry's children ridiculous (let's hope Albus Severus doesn't have a lisp ) while others expressed dismay that Ginny apparently didn't get to name any of them (she didn't want to name one of their sons after her uncle Fabian or her uncle Gideon? not even Colin as a middle name? no nod to the Arthurian theme of her own family?). Others criticized Rowling's pairings (some think Harry/Hermione would've been a better pairing; others are fond of Hermione/Draco) with one reviewer commenting on her "putting everyone in neat heterosexual rows." And in addition to that, I found it too….sweet. After all of the pain and horror of the seventh book, I think a bittersweet epilogue would've been more appropriate. Yes, Harry deserves to find happiness after all he's been through, but I would've liked to see him find it in a less saccharine way. Maybe fast-forward to when Ginny is pregnant with their first child and Harry is watching the next batch of first years board the Hogwarts Express, or the day James gets his acceptance letter.

A lot of that seems like more of a wishing that Harry Potter was something other than what it is. It is centered on Harry, who would be the hero of your typical white privileged child. You're the chosen one, important, and no one else can save the world but you...even if other more talented, worthy people do all the heavy lifting. You end up with all the glory. Also, Snape is somehow a hero? He's a terribly immature adult whose pinning for unrequited love would make Jay Gatsby blush at its extravagance. And that's all fine because it's just YA escapism with some basic life lessons. That's what it is and all it is and it succeeded in being what it is. It was never a terribly sophisticated screed on class disparity, or the plight of minorities... It was just a story that people could escape to as a break from their real world concern. So long as the play does that, it will be a resounding success, no matter how ridiculous it is. Because Harry Potter has always been ridiculous, and that was always the point. People do not want to read about the hard and oft times futile work of finding a place in this world, they'd rather fantasize about one where a magic talking hat takes care of that on your first day of school. 1
