Oversleep Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 I find it amusing to read about American schools. Cause I know them only from films, TV series and comics ^^
Mestiv he/him Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 It's interesting how sports oriented the USA schools are and despite that there is a problem with obesity. At least stereotypicaly there is that problem. How is that?
Young Bard he/him Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 (edited) Well, technically mine is an Australian School, which is quite different. It makes headlines if there's a bombscare at an Australian School for one thing... Unfortunately, the overestimation of sports seems to apply the world over. EDIT: Regarding Mestiv's question, I'd say it's because of the similar kind of principle. The people participating in sports aren't a majority, they're a very vocal, but very small minority group. That's my theory, anyway. Edited May 26, 2016 by The Young Bard
Quiver he/him Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 This is an article I agree with. In fact -and as egotistical as it sounds- it's the thing that I said, from the start, was the most fascinating prospect of having Spidey in the MCU. ...but also, the comments started talking about pop culture in the universe, and wondering what Doctor Who would be like in the MCU and guys? Guys. This is the best thing, I bet if nothing else, their version of DW at some point had an episode where one version of the Doctor met Cap. Maybe instead of Cap’n Jack we had Cap’n Steve in the TARDIS, his disappearance in WWII cover for being recruited into the Time Agency, and still flirting with everything that moved… followed by some embarrassment when the real Cap turned up alive. But when real Cap meets young Doctor Who fans he pretends that he really DOES know the Doctor. I want this so much. 3

TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 Like anything, it could go well or it could go horribly, horribly wrong. But Spidey and Cap aren't like Trump. They're likable, for one, and they both have better hair. And normal-sized hands. 1
Delightful Posted May 26, 2016 Author Posted May 26, 2016 I've been reading too and it made me angry and I don't like being angry. So apparently Wanda and Pietro Maximoff are canonically Jewish, being children of Magneto the Holocaust survivor. But in the movies, I'm retry sure at some point Wanda wore a cross necklace, it's never mentioned, and instead they're volunteers for Nazi-fill-ins. We could have had a Jewish woman on the Avengers and it would have been freaking awesome but we don't. And that sucks.

In Wanda and Pietro's defence, they were both adopted. Pietro's character is usually about angsting over his relationship to Magneto (you know, when he isn't being a smug jerk about how awesome he is), while Wanda tends to emphasize the Roma heritage that she was raised in. The fact that they are Jewish isn't ever really mentioned, since... until they were twenty-some years old, it wasn't a thing they were aware of. ...A story about Wanda or Pietro investigating their roots would have been fascinating, but I don't think it's ever really happened. Also, Wanda and Pietro aren't Magneto's kids anymore (for dumb reasons, which are dumb), so... there's that. 1

As far as I know, not anymore as Magneto being their father was retconed out of continuity at about the same time Age of Ultron was released, which obviously wasn't just meant as a take that at FOX for the whole rights issue.
Delightful Posted May 26, 2016 Author Posted May 26, 2016 It would just be totally awesome to have some Jewish superhero representation, particularly since the whole superhero genre was basically created by Jews to begin with. I mean Iron Man could totally be. His name is Stark after all. I'll keep dreaming.

On the topic of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, I actually don't think their mother was ever jewish to begin with, even before it was removed from canon, if I remeber right.

I don't think her beliefs were ever mentioned aside from a casual "oh, by the way, she's Jewish," but I do wish she'd stuck around Ultimate Spiderman longer. I was fond of the Kitty/Peter ship….

The weird thing is, there are some Jewish superheroes who have appeared on screen... except that the fact that they are Jewish is never, ever mentioned. Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat) from the X-Men films is Jewish; in fact, she actually got some really neat scenes in the comics which were related to that, both to her dealing with anti-semitism and her trying to wrap her head around the fact that Magneto -who at the time was very firmly in genocidal maniac supervillain mode- was also a Jew who lived through the Holocaust. Ben Grimm, aka The Thing from the Fantastic Four is also, I believe, of Jewish descent... which actually raises a really weird situation, since In-Universe, Ben Grimm is one of the most popular superheroes of all time, while, in our world, the Fantastic Four aren't exactly a best seller...

Quiver he/him Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 (edited) I steadfastly refuse to dignify that terrible idea as canon. Now. Be fair. This reveal happened literally yesterday, and on the very last page of the comic as a SURPRISE REVEAL. The whole point of it is supposed to be a 'What the-' plot twist to make people want to come back next month and find out what the hell happened. The odd's of 616!Steve Rogers having secretly been working for Hydra all along is roughly, I'd say, THERE ARE NO ODDS IT'S NOT HAPPENING. ...Of course, whether or not this story is a good idea is a whole other matter... I. I just saw someone try to argue GOKU is Lawful Good. Can I use this Nope meme for my reaction to that? Edited May 26, 2016 by Quiver

(And it's not even like I made it, anyway. ) Your reaction makes me think I'm a few posts away from being forced to hand over my boots. But, really, Captain Hydra ain't exactly the worst idea they could go with. Heck, considering how the Red Skull has super telepathy these days, I'd say the bigger question is why he hans't ALREADY tried converting Cap to his side. I mean, the last time he tried it, we had to go through AXIS, which was one of the worst events Marvels ever done, but still... Oh, and if you hadn't heard? The Red Skull has telepathic powers, because he stole Charles Xaviers brain after Xavier was murdered by Cyclops after Cyclops was possessed by the Phoenix after he was trying to stop the Avengers from kidnapping his granddaughter. Cyclops was, naturally, branded a terrorist for this. So like Isaid, Captain Hydra. Could be worse.
Delightful Posted May 26, 2016 Author Posted May 26, 2016 but cap is Mr Super Nazi fighter. He can't have been a Nazi all along that's just plain wrong. 1
Quiver he/him Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 but cap is Mr Super Nazi fighter. He can't have been a Nazi all along that's just plain wrong. Exactly. It ain't gonna happen. This is like... Like, during the fifties. They would do a cover showing Superman doing something outrageous, like destroying Metropolis, or torturing his friends, with a caption like "Holy Krypton! The Man of Steel... the Terror of Steel?!?" And the idea was that readers would pick it up, and read to see why Superman had turned into such a di- -ifferent person. And Always, it would turn out to be out of context, or he had reasons and what seemed like villainy was for a particular reason, like he was pretending to be a Super Tyrant to scare off would be alien invaders or something. Cap being a Nazi ain't gonna happen.

It's like….well, like Captain America turning out to have been a Nazi all along. Or, to borrow an old song lyric, "for a strict dictator to retire/ Fire the army, teach the poor origami." It just doesn't work.
Kaymyth she/her Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 Creeping up towards convention time, kids! Off early today to check into the con hotel and then pick our artist Guest of Honor up from the airport. Then it's the pre-con dinner, then the pre-con party, and then tomorrow is con! ConQuesT 47 will soon be a go.
