Strife Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Well, in G. R. R. Martin's case, a 10% rate would still be miraculous. Don't poke the sleeping bear. I hear that every time he is taunted, he kills off a Stark. *Not at all off-topic* 4
Aether he/him Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Don't poke the sleeping bear. Not that I want him to kill the rest, but he'll hopefully move on to the Boltons afterwards. 4
DBDx316 Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 Yes, however he has more "open" series now: SA, Reckoners, Mistborn Adventures, Ritmatist (and those long awaited pieces such as Elantris 2). So I personally think that we will get 1 or even 2 smaller books and one SA. Yes..this was expectable but very sad in the same time Here is the most recent post BS has made regarding his writing order and mentions the 18-24 month window. I do think maybe 2016 was a typo because that would be more about 30+ months from now. http://brandonsanderson.com/state-of-the-sanderson/

Moogle Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 (edited) It's not a popular opinion, but I wouldn't mind if the anger from that taunt was redirected toward Sansa.... Poor Sansa. Such a hard life, and she gets even more hate from fans of the series. She just can't win, can she? As to the writing window, I doubt it was a typo. Team Sanderson just wants more time to do each book, and frankly, I don't blame them. They expected the SA books to be shorter than The Way of Kings, but WoR ended up being longer if I am remembering right. This increases the time required to edit it, as well as the writing time. It sounds like they've had their pants on fire trying to edit and get WoR out for March. I can't be the only one who remembers Towers of Midnight. I hope they take as long as needed. I said something like this for Wheel of Time, but because we are so fresh into this series, I so desperately want to know how everything works that I think I'm more in favor of speed. This isn't even a joke: If Brandon published a 30 page pamphlet that explained how the magic system worked, threw in a few maps and drawings, and maybe gave a hint of Cosmere explanation, I would buy it right now for the price of a hard cover book. I JUST WANT TO KNOOOOOOOOW! 1

Maybe Peter could chime in as to the zeitgeist on that?
flinn Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 (edited) The Parshendi who revealed they were responsible could not tell anyone what the King was doing. That would just ensure someone else did it. Dalinar is now making the same changes and he will be the one who pushes the wrong button, IMO. Also, plays into the Navani quote, about being able to stop it. She saw the same changes happening in Dalinar as she saw in her husband and in hindsight was easy to see how she could have stopped it. Colby Jack he/him Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 I like Shallan's chapter the most, no question about it. It updated us on her progress since the last book, gave us some juicy information on the sprens themselves to mull over, and at the end, I smiled like a total idiot when she finally have her way and went into the waters to see the snathid. That art piece I found afterward in the Steelhunt gallery just pretty much seal the deal.Awesome character development here!In contrast, Kaladin and Janash were far less interesting. If this is how Shallan will be in the Words of Radiance, I think she'll take over as my favorite character.

They are developing so slowly.
lummi he/him Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) Sansa was and is a drama queen , also she is selfish. Edited January 13, 2014 by Windrunner Please keep your language clean. Thanks!
flinn Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Hate to interrupt all the GRRM talk, but to follow up on my above post.. Wonder what the likelyhood of Gavilar* having visions. Now Navani is encouraging Dalinar to embrace and chronicle the visions, which makes her feel in some way responsible. She may think she could have somehow stopped the chain of events.
Aoibheann she/her Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 I read this eagerly on Thursday, but haven't had the chance to type up my thoughts until now. I've read through the thread, so I'm repeating something, but I want to note things I interpreted as X rather than Y. Wow. I had read some of the transcripts and the bits from the steel-hunt; it's interesting to see from the finished work. Impressions on first & second readings: Prologue: Jasnah has only been an avowed heretic since the feast? would she have done this if her Father were already dead? What happened between Jasnah & Amaram? The shadows = an attack. Darkness? maybe? (the sword was already unsheathed, he didn't unsheath it until Shadesmar - are shardblades different there?) Shadesmar nursery tales???? Who was she considering assassinating? why? Heralds - definitely! both of them. Who is the nervous Nellie if Darkness is Nalan? Jasnah knows so much about the Parshendi. Why does no one on the Shattered Plains seem to know this information? Did Gavilar hesitate (at feast and end) because he considered giving Jasnah the sphere? This is the drive to research the voidbringers... but it means she has a reason to think the parshendi are the voidbringers before she begins her research. Chapter 1 Is the "voice deep inside her" a spren? It "sounded" different than Syl's voice or Shallan's Cryptic. I'm still trying to take in all the info on spren and realmatics. Jasnah has had conversations with multiple spren??? How many? what types? Will returning a functional soulcaster cause Balat to join the Ghostbloods? I liked Danlan - what happened between her and Adolin? Is she still a clerk for Dalinar? Did this have to do with Sadeas' betrayal? Is her father even still alive? Jasnah says, "He is handsome and well acquainted with amiable discourse." What a horribly superficial way of describing your cousin. Shallan has no idea how marriage will affect her. It will be interesting to see how this develops. Given Jasnah's apparent antipathy toward men, she may have a hard time partnering with another surgebinder. Initial thought: Spanreeds work on water? - yes, it was probably in port the night before. Is the wind spren taunting Shallan only a wind spren? Will she see more spren now? How close is Rock to bonding a spren? Can KR bond with multiple spren? what's the limit? Nice work on Shallan's immersion. was the spren of the Santhid drawn to Shallan? Jasnah? Chapter 2: who will shave the bridgemen from the other bridges? based on the Eshonai reading, what kind of spren will Shen bind with? Rind is a great character - a good person for Kaladin to interact with. since Kaladin is holding a low level of stormlight, will Jasnah see him for what he is, right off? How will Dalinar react to no longer having a Cobalt Guard? etc? 2
skaa he/him Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Here's a funny tidbit I noticed (from the Santhid chapter): Tozbek smiled broadly. “I’ll take you to see some shells in the port at Amydlatn when we stop there, young miss. They have quite a collection!” She didn’t know where that was, but from the jumble of consonants squished together, she assumed it would be on the Thaylen side. Is it just me, or does this sound a lot like "I Can Hear Spelling" Skip from Brandon's "I Hate Dragons" story? Seriously, though, how could Shallan know that the name had lots of consonants "squished together" just from what Tozbek said? I would have just heard something like "Amidlatin" (assuming that's how it's pronounced), which doesn't look too consonant-heavy to me.
Aoibheann she/her Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 I went to high school with a number of people who had the last name Tvrdy. I would have a hard time spelling it if I only heard the name. In fact, as I try to come up with alternate spellings, they would all have different pronunciations. Taverdy, tvirdy (close), eh.
shadewolf Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Prologue: Jasnah has only been an avowed heretic since the feast? would she have done this if her Father were already dead? Shadesmar nursery tales???? Jasnah knows so much about the Parshendi. Why does no one on the Shattered Plains seem to know this information I think it's more the fact she made the fact that she was an atheist known to the world at the feast, than anything. Meh, there have been plenty of crazy nursery rhymes about mysterious places in real life and literature Well her father and uncle were the original men that met the parshendi, and she had unfettered access to both, and it's quite likely she had met the parshendi delegation and interacted with them(there was a feast going on that night). Chapter 2: who will shave the bridgemen from the other bridges? since Kaladin is holding a low level of stormlight, will Jasnah see him for what he is, right off? Well considering they're all free men, and more importantly soldiers now, they'll have money and the access for a barber. Speaking of that, man dalinars camp losing 6000 people has got to suck for the economy with the camp, suddenly the merchant lose 6000 customers, that'll definitely be a struggle. Good question, can radients sense stormlight in that fashion? I mean from the looks of things, it's not light he's glowing with that minimum level of stormlight,
Moogle Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Good question, can radients sense stormlight in that fashion? I mean from the looks of things, it's not light he's glowing with that minimum level of stormlight, Darkness can sense Lift's Stormlight the instant she starts with it. Not sure if we should be using Heralds as a base for what normal Radiants can do, though.
DocHoliday he/him Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Haven't seen that yet. PERFECT. Very excited for prologues now. Myself as well, but I'm curious who what has a viewpoint that would be relevant? Shallon is a child during these events and in Any Khevad no less. Kaladin, has similar issues. A youngster in an army. Dalinar passed out drunk doesn't seem relevant. Perhaps Sadeas and Amaran? Brace yourselves love tringle inbound. Time to the second son win the girl. (Dalinar would understand his young son side for sure) I am confounded as to why so many people are convinced Renarin and Shallon will get together. Was there a WoB I missed out on? Or is Feather pushing their agenda and people have taken it for fact? If we keep Shallarin afloat to much, I'm going to laugh when BS pulls a George Martin on us. 2
Dros Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Myself as well, but I'm curious who what has a viewpoint that would be relevant? Gavilar.

Shallan and Kaladin is another popular pairing. I agree, Renarin is likely to be killed, even more than Dalinar.
DocHoliday he/him Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Gavilar. That leaves us 2 prologue short though. Gavilar being alive would be a helluva bomb drop in book 5, especially since thats where the big man plans on leaving us for a few years, but we're missing the in between.

Gavilar. I expected Gavilar to be one, and the last one at that. a very very telling POV that goes over what he knows about the night. I expect a pretty large twist on our understanding. Elhokar would be a great one too, considering we believe him to be talking to two Heralds. Brandon is also fine doing 1-time POV's, so it could be ANY of the interesting characters in the room. Any of the Heralds, Navani in a different room, Jasnah's spy, one of the Parshedii musicians that is actually Eshonai (she did recognize Dalinar on the Plains, right?), etc.
Colby Jack he/him Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 If we keep Shallarin afloat to much, I'm going to laugh when BS pulls a George Martin on us. If this was GRRM, both Renarin and Shallan will be perfectly compatible with each other, almost seemingly destined to be so, with storylines that mirrors and compliments each other, but they will sleep around with other people and won't even meet for the first five books, only to potentially get together in the last one.

I think Brandon said he's not against writing flashback chapters of dead characters, so I figured that's how we'd see the POV from Gavilar on that night.
