[Theory] Stormlight is Odium's Investiture
shadewolf replied to kaellok's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'd like to point out that it may be that the listeners evolved to utilize stormlight, whereas humans after arriving on Roshar were given access to stormlight later on. So the Listener became effecient with it over time whereas the humans ability never changed.- 5 replies

Well because the method to make the shardplate is very complicated and roshar doesn't have enough of an understanding of the science and mathematics that dictates their world to replicate such devices. Do you think people of our past could replicate a flashlight if you went back in time and gave them one. it would take ages for researchers to develop the theory to understand the physics of why the thing lights, the electrical engineering to design the circuitry, the chemical engineering to make the casing(and probably the IC). Plus before the knight radiants were formed, the desolation's decimated the population, and caused widespread destruction, probably causing a huge loss of scientific progress. this seems consistent with taln's ramblings, where if a society could forget how to forge steel, and didn't have time to learn how(more importantly, create the tools to forge steel), they definitely won't be able to produce shardplate. Also the Radiants seemingly didn't share there research with outsiders, otherwise why didn't we see more hints of technolgy in dalinars vision of the battle with the midnight essence. We saw a fabreial that healed people, yet fire seemed to be the primary tool for cooking and heating.

To be fair, we don't know why surge binding needs stormlight, but using a shardblade doesn't; it doesn't make sense considering that we've seen the spren regularly have trouble affecting the world directly.

Adolin's actions at the end of WoR (spoilers)
shadewolf replied to Dain's topic in Stormlight Archive
lol I was thinking the same for different reason. We spend an entire book with Kaladin pining to kill Amaram, if anything Kaladin would totally sympathize with Adolin. Sure Kaladin might not condone Adolins actions, but he's done stupid things on the spur of the moment coughchallengingAmaramcough so it recently won't destroy their burgeoning friendship. -
WoB that says we haven't seen any knight radiant wearing shardplate. Words of Radiance says there were only 16 knight radiants in the windrunner order, yet we see more than that discard their shards in Dalinar's vision. This leads me to believe that squires also get shard blades as well as plate.

Adolin's actions at the end of WoR (spoilers)
shadewolf replied to Dain's topic in Stormlight Archive
As weird as it sounds, I think killing Sedeas may be him living up to his oath. If a person just claims to try his very hardest to drive people apart, and is a credible enough treat to accomplish it, what would drive them apart more, killing him or not killing him. I have my doubts about the bondsmiths, there are a lot of ways to bring people together that aren't exactly clean or good, such as through manipulation and fear. Ishi himself established the Knights Radiants with the threat of death. The first ideal may brunt some of the choices that have to be made, but it doesn't disallow making the hard-choices. Dalinar has already agreed to Adolin killing Sedeas in a duel. Sure you could say, "but adolin is killing him out in the open and not in the shadows." Does that make his death any better of a choice. The only difference is in the repercussions. Assassins in the night would just spark a war that Dalinar couldn't win for most of WoR, which is why he didn't strike down Sedeas at the end of WoK. By the end of WoR however, things have changed immensely. I really think he'd have gone for it given that there was nobody else and nothing to really link him with the crime(that we know of atleast). -
Adolin's actions at the end of WoR (spoilers)
shadewolf replied to Dain's topic in Stormlight Archive
While we bring up Dalinar, what would he have done in that situation? Honestly I think he might have done the same exact thing as his son, and had a good nights rest after. -
Still Kaladin is now a light eyes who also killed the assassin in white, that's got to count for something. I think Amaram has hightailed out of Alethekar, so legal prosecution won't happen under alethi law.

Ym being a truthwatcher, would allow him access to the illumination surge, not that he really got to use it. I wonder what happened to his spren.

We know from Nalan, that as long as the brain isn't damage it's pretty simple to save a person.Plus it's not like you die instantly from a knife to the chest. If she used her last bits of stormlight to heal the most significantly damage portions of her heart, and then elsecall to somewhere safe, It's quite possible for her to survive. This may be a simple answer, but honestly it fits.

What do you think is going to happen in book three
shadewolf replied to shadewolf's topic in Stormlight Archive
Yes, kaladin totally calls him brightlord, princling as a sign of respect. Am I the only one that had a modicrum of respect for adolin at the end of WoK, and expected him and kaladin to have a bro-ship by the end of WoR. I agreed with Shallan, when she pointed out with how much of a Kaladin was being to Adolin. But I do agree with most of what you've said, with a few minor points in the shipping business, mostly about how Shallan is portraying herself as adolins ideal women, and how I believe adolin is falling for her, because she wasn't the typical lighteyed girl. I do believe that Adolin would be perfectly fine with Shallan should she drop her entire mask, and would appreciate her even more. The end result however will still be Shallan ending up with Kaladin, I'll be pleasantly surprised if that doesn't happen, but... Lol I thinks it's really funny how you found Shallan's actions extremely off putting in WoK, by the end of the book I was sure Shallan was high functioning sociopath, that was trying to fool the reader as much as she was trying to fool jasnah, I still believe this to an extent(I know she does have a conscience, but if it came down to it, she'd be as vicious as sedeas). -

I want to change this slightly. Everyone assumes Dalinar is the criminal, and the prosecution gets really serious putting dalinar's life on the line. This forces adolin to have a moral quandry of whether to admit his crime or not, ultimately I think he will to save his father and admit guilt, and then Dalinar is forced into the position of having his sons life in his hands. slow down there mate. you're forcing things to go way to quickly. from what I've noticed, sanderson uses part one to set the story. Show what's currently going on, and where the characters are at and Introduce problems for characters; solutions are rarely done here. Kaladin might return to hearthstone by the end of part one, we don't know how long it will take him to get there, he might also take a couple of side trip to warn other places and show proof that the Radiants have returned. When he finally reaches hearthstone, he'll need to convince people of the dangers of the coming storm. Shallan finding answers for unlocking the oathgates would also be really quick, her current predicament with the ghostbloods, and political manuverings in court will be the main focus for her story. We'll also start having flashbacks into Szeth's past, as well as learn what he's doing and what he's planning on doing. I feel like the third book will try and redeem Szeth, so an attack on the stone shamanate would be better sooner than later. -
it's obvious he's accepted them as knight radiants, now we just need some stormlight to see what abilities they have ;p

What do you think is going to happen in book three
shadewolf replied to shadewolf's topic in Stormlight Archive
that's actually debatable, we know that book 2 covers about 70-80 days book 1 also seems to cover about the same time frame. -
Just saying, Taln is the herald of the stonewards, but not a radiant in the order.

I'm pretty sure that if Kaladin does meet Jasnah in hearthstone, Wit won't be with her at the time, otherwise it would be too straightforward. Well it's not like we predicted everything that was going to happen in book 2. I do believe that BS will definitely have a couple of surprises. lol it'll be hardly any more protection, althekar and the shattered plains also have mountains to the east yet the high storms still pummel them. -

And what better way for Adolins character to progress, when he finds out that his father is being blamed. I think he might have one or two point of views, but alot less than book two. Another revenge plotline would be repetitive and a step back, no I see Kaladins journey in book three more about leadership, on what constitutes being a good leader. Roshone might meet his comeuppance, but it won't be by kaladin's hands. That was actually might first thought, that she arrived near Hearthstone. I reread the epilogue like 4 times trying to analyze the geography mentioned in the chapter, from the hills mentioned, it wouldn't be out of place, it's just a forest was also mentioned, and that's throwing me off. It's possible now that he knows that he could've stopped killing at any moment, he may have to face that he was a coward, and find answers to the question of what is law, how should it be handled, by the intent of the law, or by the wording. Lol that's what I'd like to know too. Well I thought about this for a bit, long story short, Shin and Makibaki are screwed due to the highstorm itself. The damage from voidbringers is what's really unpredictable. the only thing we can try and predict are the characters reactions during and after the storm. Right now everyone is esentially on Urithiru, with limited supplies, and worse mobility, there's very little they can do other than prepare. -
because at the end of WoR, his eyes turned to bright blue, he had hoped they'd stay the same but they didn't. He will be viewed by others as a lighteyes, even if he wasn't born one, and doesn't want other to treat him as one.

Before even reading Words of Radiance, we knew that a couple of events were going to happen, such as a confrontation between Szeth and Kaladin, Amaram and Kaladin, Shallan arriving at the shattered plains. What events do you think are very likely to happen in book 3 from where we left off Kaladin is about to head to hearthstone to find his parent. I don't think he'll find them there, and it will lead him on a journey to find them, and save as many as he can. Shallan is back in Urithiru, I don't think she'll leave the place just yet, due the fact after kaladin leaves she's the only person that can operate the Oathgate. She'll eventually meet up with the ghostbloods and learn what they're working towards. Jasnah, elsecalled back to Roshar, but where? Second question, does it even matter, she could've master her transportation surge, and can just teleport herself to the Shattered-plains or Urithiru after getting more stormlight. A confrontation between her and Shallan will definitely happen about the ghost bloods. I have no clue and what will happen with any of the male Kholins. Dalinar will try to be even more of a diplomat than he was in the last book, the afteraffects of the everstorm will however convince people he's not crazy and his major confrontation this book seems to be with Taravangian. I wonder if he'll even get a single viewpoint chapter in book three. At this point though I wouldn't mind, his character development has more or less ended, and his actions not being known might lead to a better story. Like how he confronted Amaram at the end of book 2. Adolin... I have no clue at this point, he'll be around shallan, and renarin, there are alot of theories of him becoming jealous, that and his actions at the end of book three will be his major character arcs in the book. Renarin, I think he'll keep his power hidden for a while longer, well atleast untill he learns to use growth and regrowth. Urithiru does need to get a proper food supply, as well as healers. But I wonder if we'll get a view point from him in the book. Szeth, we know we'll be getting his backstory, he's off to confront the stone shamanate, but what next. Will he join Nalan's hunt for radiants? How long will his chapter even be, we're getting alot of view point characters now
-
Ok long story short, Hearthstone is located on the westernmost part of Sedeas' domain(it the part of Althekar that borders Herdaz), it's located near the river. If they follow the river, they can get to kholinar, more or less. Urithiru, is somewhere in the mountains located south of the purelake and Tu Bayla. ... I don't think you really understand one of Kaladin's major plot points, It wasn't so much about keeping his oaths, is all about protecting people. If the chance is presented where he can save Roshone, then he has to because it's the right thing to do. Also it may be better if they stay where they are, considering that the new highstorm is survivable given proper shelter, and the town didn't have that many parshendi, whereas a city would be crawling with them. Anyways, I do think the other oathgates will be unlocked next book, but it's going to be something that'll concerns Shallan and Jasnah.
-
not to derail this thread, is it just me or does each order of KR, have a hidden skill of sorts? Renarin can see the future, Shallan might be able to see into the past. I feel that kaladin might have something similar but I'm not sure, maybe being able to share stormlight, but I don't have enough proof that the ability is unique to his order.

to be fair, I think that the majority of the characters in series, could do from a touch of humility, including kaladin. Sure the guy is beaten down constantly, but I would never dare to say he's humble, and he faces alot of the problems of dalinar, just he's on the opposite side of the societal spectrum.
