Thinking about Amaram makes him darker. To answer the question in the topic, I think we love Kaladin because he puts away his own prejudices to do what's right, even mildly conquering them in the process. If Kaladin doesn't still have some issues with lighteyes by the end of the ten-book series, I will be disappointed with Sanderson. You don't exactly 'get over' something like what he has. You can make progress on it to be sure, but perhaps never quite get over it.
