Shardbearer he/him Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 “You realize that I didn’t choose you,” he said, a face appearing in the vines as they moved. His speaking left a strange effect, the trail behind him clotted with a sequence of frozen faces. The mouth seemed to move because it was growing so quickly beside her. “I wanted to pick a distinguished Iriali matron. A grandmother, an accomplished gardener. But no, the Ring said we should choose you. ‘She has visited the Old Magic,’ they said. ‘Our mother has blessed her,’ they said. ‘She will be young, and we can mold her,’ they said. I find this odd. The spren had no choice as to whom he has to bond with unlike syl?. And he mentions 'The Ring'. Who and what could be the ring? It sounds like he did have a choice, but he was more or less ordered to pick Lift (see bolded part for why I think that).
cem he/him Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 I would say he was convinced rather than ordered. Generally speaking, you don't need to come up with justifications like the Ring apparently has, when you can just order someone to do what you want.
don_karma_II he/him Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 “Praise Yaezir,” he said. “Herald of Kings. May he lead in wisdom. If he ever stops drooling.” Another passage I found interesting. Seems more like a dig at Yaezir, Herald of Kings. Could Yaezir be the drunk fool in WoK?
Aether he/him Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 (edited) And he mentions 'The Ring'. Who and what could be the ring? Presumably certain Nahel Spren's governing entity. What I want to know is who is on it, which type of Spren does it govern, and does its mandate permit it to enforce its decisions? I so wanna see "Cops - Spren edition" ! - EDIT: Really stupid joke... don_karma_II he/him Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 (edited) I agree ordered may not be the word. Coaxed may be. But the point is 'whoever the ring are, they can decide or guide a spren to form a bond with humans.' Which means they have access to both physical realm and cognitive realm. On a side note, crossing over has left a few holes in Wyndle's memory even after he took precautions. Is that what happened to all the sprens in roshar? Have they been forced (I use forced because since they don't have memories they didn't take the precautions as wyndle did) to appear in the phsyical realm by some unknown force? On a lighter note, would love to see spren law enforcement and judicial system. Probably wyndle was charged for growing of illegal crystals in his garden and taken to 'The Ring' for justice. His punishment was banishment (at least partially) to the physical realm and bond with Lift. 2

Auri Garvel Xel'iathi he/him Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Spren seem to exist quite happily without human bonds but are sent to the physical realm to bond with men. Are spren perhaps from the tranqueline halls?
Aether he/him Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Only if the Tranquiline Halls are really just the Cognitive Realm. Or I dunno, there are several theories as to what the Halls really are. Some think it might be one of the other habitable planets in the same system as Roshar (id est "the Greater Roshar system), such as Ashyn. Spren are native to Roshar though. They might not need to have come from anywhere else.
Duskshard he/him Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Just noticed this. Huh, Lift thought, someone scratched a face off of that one. Who’d ruin a painting like that, and such a fine one, the Heralds all in a row? It seems that Baxil's mistress (Shalash) has payed a recent visit to the the bronze palace. She certainly gets around.
Argent he/him Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 We can no longer be blood brothers... You should've seen this ages ago. Sorry.

harry31j97 he/him Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Has anyone else noticed this? '"She has visited old magic,"they said, "She is blessed by our mother,"they said.' I think this lends credence to theory that Cultivation is Nightwatcher, since by WoB, spren are creations of Honor & Cultivation. The link here between mother of the sprens & old magic pretty much points towards Cultivation being Nightwatcher.
Binnut he/him Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 It has been discussed, and I think that there is general consensus on the forum that the Nightwatcher is Cultivation.
WitSpren he/him Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 What I do not understand is that Lift has been with Wyndal and "Manipulating Friction" for many weeks. Wyndal seems to know a lot, but has not taught her to take Stormlight" from Spheres?
Swimmingly he/him Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Well, she doesn't really need spheres, does she? It's even possible that her unique abilities inhibit her ability to take Stormlight from spheres.
WitSpren he/him Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Well, she doesn't really need spheres, does she? It's even possible that her unique abilities inhibit her ability to take Stormlight from spheres. Yes, that is my concern. I do not think that it is the case, but it is a concern. 8 days & we find out - I hope.
Swimmingly he/him Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Why is that a problem? If a clearchip buys a loaf of bread, and a loaf of bread seems to give her several minutes of slickings plus regrowing a slit throat, then she may actually be at an advantage in terms of value. I suppose food isn't rechargeable like gems, but if you can't get food anyway, you're in trouble. The weepings especially might give her an advantage, if infused spheres start to run out by the end. I'm just really hoping to see more of our favourite Awesome Edgedancer.

I'm just really hoping to see more of our favourite Awesome Edgedancer. I'm just saying that I think that it would be best if she can do both. Two sources vs only one source. & at this point, I think that will be the case. Can't think of any reason that it would not be both. The only thing is that Wyndal seem to know that food is is not the norm (Very Special), but somehow has not communicated to her the option it use Stormlight from Spheres. She was even carrying one for light.
