I remember one of the worst things about having braces was that I couldn't eat corn on the cob. I had to cut the corn off the cob and it it sadly while watching my siblings have way too much fun (on purpose I tell you) eating theirs. Please understand. My life consists of waiting for fall so I can have corn on the cob. I am a corn on the cob addict. Not having that joy... *shudders*

Also, after rereading Alloy of Law, I may say that Wayne is a five-star novel. All I remember from when I read it last was that I thought it wasn't as good as some of Sanderson's other books. I want to slap myself now. It's got Wayne! Wayne automatically makes it a five-star novel. Plus, lucky hat.

I have a confession for you all.

I love Vin. I love Elend. Kelsier's crew is in top form as usual. Sazed and Tindwyl are amazing, and I want to give Demoux a pug hug. OreSeur is wonderfully snippy. If there are any other decent characters I missed, they're included in spirit.

But I am not enjoying Well of Ascension.

The writing is great. The world is innovative. The characters are well rounded. But only the decent ones are bearable. Every time someone other than one of the aforementioned characters appears on the page, I want to leap into Scadrial with a mannequin made entirely of middle fingers, and I want to beat them over the head with it. I hate them all that much.

I haven't read any more in two days. I have chharacters to root for, and I'm rooting for them, but everyone else is just so despicable that I'm having a hard time getting through.

Help? Or advice? Pictures of Demoux hugging a pug while Straff and Philen choke on their own smug smiles?

I feel you, Twi. I don't express this much, but I only really cared for the first Mistborn and the Alloy of Law books. The other two just get too dang dark and bleak and depressing and irritating.

 

 

Meanwhile, Reddit reminds me that after all this time, my emotions still haven't recovered from Up.

My siblings assured me that all of the awful characters get their comeuppance, but....I just don't know how much more of this I can take. I think I'll need to take a break for a while. Go back to rereading TFE for the memes, maybe go back to the Alcatraz books. I'm not saying that as a criticism of Sanderson; to the contrary, he's elicited some very strong emotional reactions from me, which is good! I just....don't think I can handle this many chulls having this much power.

Though if anyone wants to draw Demoux being mobbed by pugs, I'd be much obliged.

I'm also rereading WoA right now, and I understand what you mean, Twi. This book and the next don't have the quick, upbeat pace of the first. The second one is the hardest to get through. But then again, I love Mistborn, maybe more than SA now that I'm rereading it, and so I might be biased.

I know your pain, I felt the same way when I read it, but it does get better. To paraphrase Alcatraz (evil librarians series):

this is the middle book, everything always goes wrong in the middle book. It's a trick we authors use to make readers scared for the characters.

Don't worry, if it weren't for the pain that is The Well of Ascention, we wouldn't get the epicness that is The Hero of Ages.

Also, Beeing gone for a day is too long, look at all the fun you guys had without me!

Oh yes. She is so good at characterization and making nonhuman characters relatable. (And you really have to for this book, large cast and only 3 human PoVs.)

My biggest issue was that she's a little less clean then Sanderson. Real swear words, a bit more description when it comes to certain scenes, but the book was great overall. And felt strange and refreshing because of the lack of Sanderson Avalanche. I give it a 19/20.

Edit: though Anne Bishop is still a very evil author. I NEED BOOK 2.

I honestly found Well of Ascension to be almost boring. It wasn't as fast-paced as the first and didn't seem to be resolving anything. But it needs to be read. I'll start to make sense later and it'll get better. And then you can have Hero of Ages, which is amazing and filled with awesomeness and wonderfulness. And then you can have Alloy of Law, which has Wayne.

Empire Strikes Back didn't have any characters that made me want to leap through the screen and stab with a fork, though. It seems every time WoA introduces a POV that doesn't belong to one of the main characters, it's a character I want to stab with a fork. A rusty one.

Argh, maybe it's my job. It's normal for me to get yelled at by self-centered jerks who would watch the world burn for a 50% off coupon, so reading about lovable characters who get the same treatment on a much grander scale just ticks me off.
