WayneSpren he/him Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Yeah, I kind of agree. So team tournament it is! So some clarification: Do we have people in teams from the start, or have a similar setup as last time, but instead of voting for only one contestant, their would be a third option for a team up. I also had an idea that kinda combines the Sharder and Team Tournaments. It is probably a flawed idea, and I haven't really stopped to think about it, but oh well. Instead of a bunch of people nominating characters, what if every Sharder "drafted" two Sanderson characters, and that was their team. This of course does have a major issue. If we didn't want any repeat characters, meaning that once a character was placed on someone's team, no one else could use them. That would mean that those who posted earlier would have a HUGE advantage over those who picked late. They could pick two extremely powerful characters, giving the others the short stick. But still, I suppose it is an idea worth considering. What do y'all think? Maybe each Sharder has to pick one character who has an Investiture power, and one who doesn't. Like, Ham and Lopen. Or Vin and Saolen.

Or we could do it Catan-style: we each pick one in random order, then pick our other one in the reverse of that order (ABCDEFGGFEDCBA)
Patar he/him Posted November 11, 2015 Author Posted November 11, 2015 Or we could do it Catan-style: we each pick one in random order, then pick our other one in the reverse of that order (ABCDEFGGFEDCBA) Hmmm, I suppose that could work. But in order to have an even amount of people, we would either need exactly 16 or 32 Sharders involved in this. And if we had 32 Sharders, and didn't want any repeat characters, that would mean we would have 64 characters. I'm totally down for doing it that way, it would just take a lot of work and time. And say we reached 32 sharders, and a few others wanted to participate, I don't know what to say to them. I doubt we could get 64 sharders onto this, and even if we did, and each match lasted a day, the draft and the tournament itself would last a VERY long time.
Patar he/him Posted January 24, 2016 Author Posted January 24, 2016 In all honesty, I decided that it might not be the best idea to do so. It was fun the first time through, but I feel that if we were to do it again, it would feel to... same-y, if that makes any sense at all. I don't want to start another tournament if it's going to end up being a carbon copy of this one. That being said, if a bunch of people want to start another one, and it would be different enough from this one, I'd be all for it. My main problem with this tournament was that I hoped to discuss who out of two combatants would win in a fight, and how/why they would do so. In the beginning it worked well, but towards the end people simply casted their vote by simply saying who they wanted to win, and not give an explanation for why. It was a shame to have two amazing fighters such as Vin and Dalinar fight each other and provide so little discussion on why one would win. Granted, a few months have passed since the conclusion of this tournament, so there may be some new people who would want to try this. IF we were to start another one, I'd first off want to make sure people are okay with it happening again. We would need to make some changes to the way it worked so it wouldn't feel the same as the first one. I'd probably enforce a rule that said you must explain why you are voting for someone, and not simply say their name. But before we even start considering rules, I want to know for sure whether or not people would want to do this again. Thoughts? 1
Patar he/him Posted March 8, 2016 Author Posted March 8, 2016 So I have an idea for bringing this back. I thought about perhaps making this a yearly thing. Every October 1st, the next annual tournament will start. This has a range of benefits: Enough time will have passed to where people might want to do this again. There will likely be new Sharders who will have a chance to participate. We will have had several new books (Shadows of Self, Bands of Mourning, Secret History, Calamity, White Sand Vol. 1) so we will have many new characters to chose from. Thoughts/Ideas? 2

natc Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 We'd need a way to remind ourselves to start though . . . Sounds good otherwise.
AnikoliNightmareVision she/her Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 I think it's nice idea having this tournament every october, since I have joined here recently
Dragon314 he/him Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Okay, I know this is over, but wayne vs. grandpa smedry? It's like (wait for dumb doctor who reference) a time war!

Yep! I was planning on starting up an interest thread sometime mid September just to see how many people are interested in doing this again, and we could probably figure out what characters are going to be in it there as well. Thanks for the reminder! Edited September 4, 2016 by Patar

Darkness Ascendant he/him Posted September 4, 2016 Posted September 4, 2016 (edited) Same, I'm in as well EDIT- After having a look at the characters you have there already, I have some to suggest, I know ur looking for new ones as well, so maybe this might help Bastille Wyrn Wulfden Galladon Lift Darkness TenSoon Paalm MeLaan Zane Harmony Tindwyl Demoux Calamity Nightweilder Nalizar Shallan Axies The Collector Nightwatcher Eshonai Rock To make the tournament more enjoyable and interesting, perhaps we could turn it into a sort of storyweaving process.Like we give it a story, and for every match up, we do a "battle". Turn it a bit hunger games eh? or should I say Contest of Champions. And who wins depends on the votes, we just have to make the stories fit them? I know I'm up for doing it Perhaps we could get a sub-topic? @Chaos Edited September 4, 2016 by Darkness Ascendant
Chaos he/him Posted September 4, 2016 Posted September 4, 2016 Make another topic whenever you guys want.

Last year we had 32, and I feel like that was a very good number, but I'd be perfectly fine having more, it would just take a lot longer. I suppose I can make the discussion thread later today, since interest seems to have been renewed, but we'll have to discuss whether or not some of the top finishers last year (Vin, Dalinar) should return to possibly prevent a repetitive finish, and whether or not OP characters (High Epics, Shards, maybe Hoid) should be included or not. I'm also really happy you brought up the topic of throwing an actual story in, because I had wanted to do something like that. I like the Contest of Champions idea, of a higher being manipulating them into fighting each other in a cosmic tournament of sorts. And I'm open to other suggestions as well, like I said I'll start the new thread soon, and we can discuss an rules or changes there. Edited September 4, 2016 by Patar

And introducing a screwed up version of Adonalsium, brought from another dimension and I have a good idea for the endgame, Eldritch, here I come
Magestar he/him Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 This looks awesome. Has anyone here played Superfight? It's a very interesting game, and I think this looks similar. I'd play this.
