My apologies if I seemed overly passionate. I was honestly incredulous, not annoyed. It seemed akin to saying that George R. R. Martin is uncomfortable with depictions of violence and sexual content in his books. I just don't understand how someone would come to that conclusion.

Also thank you for your defense, Argent. I don't expect everyone to be familiar with that story or to have met Brandon in person, but I thought that a bit of anecdotal evidence could be useful for showing how Brandon acts, instead of just what he says. I don't think monetize is a dirty word inherently, but I got the indication that McMillion thinks that Brandon is more concerned with making money off of books instead of telling stories he wants to share. I think that's quite a claim to be making and that for Brandon to do such would seem to be a betrayal of his own artistic integrity, but that's beside the point. There's definitely nothing wrong with wanting to make money off of your work, however.

I'd just like to reiterate again that I did not intend to seem angry or rude in my response. I just do not understand how a man who gives away copies of his self-published ebooks to those who purchase physical copies and has hinted that he wouldn't be entirely upset at people who pirate copies of books they already own in a physical format could be seen as primarily concerned with monetization.

Anyway, I'd be quite content to let this die now that I've properly apologized and clarified what was perhaps an overzealous defense on my part.

Anyone here read Slow Regard? I liked it for what it was, but it definitely did not appeal to me as much as the main books do. I've been wanting to reread them, but I've lent both NotW and WMF to friends who've had them for months. :/

I have to say, a lot of the comments I read on here are very well written indeed. Are most of you aspireing writers?

I haven't read 'Slow regard' yet but I will. The delay has stemmed from the fact that I know it has nothing in particular to do with the trilogy itself, and although most fans loved Auri, I only found her interesting. But for the love of Pats style I will read it at some point.

I am however 2/3's of the way through 'the great hunt' WoT, and the story still hasn't gripped me. I know that's going off track (I think I was discussing this on a separate forum) I will probably still end up making my way through the whole series though.

There's still a handful of cosmere stories I haven't read yet. Elantris or warbreaker? Which one first guys?

A lot of us yeah. Some, like me just have a magic system or a world and aren't sure where to go with it though.

 

I read Slow Regard. I loved it. I loved the different feel, it was really really refreshing(probably because I'd just come from reading something crazy deep like War and Peace).

 

Go ahead and go with Warbreaker I guess, I'd save Elantris for last because it's weaker.

I've read Slow Regard. I loved it, but you really do have to like Auri a lot for it to work.

Sanderfuss, I have definitely said this before regarding WoT, and maybe to you specifically, but I recommend giving book 3 a try, it is one of my favorites in the series. As for Warbreaker vs Elantris: I think Elantris is the worst of the Cosmere books (I still enjoy it, but the rest are better), so make of that what you will

Having just read Wise Man's Fear, I now realize how long everyone else has been waiting for Doors of Stone. How have you remained sane? Oh yeah, that's right, you waited three years for Words of Radiance, too. You guys are remarkable.

Honestly, I don't think about it. I don't wait for it, I don't get hyped up, I don't build up anticipation. KKC3 occupies the same area of my brain as flying cars and AI - probably within reach in my lifetime, but pointless to speculate about.

Slow Regard was actually really good. Like, if someone had told me "Here, read this. It has nothing to do with Kvothe, and there's not any conflict in it or anything, but still read it." I would have stayed as far way as possible. However, that being said I think that it is a testament to Pat's ability that I freaking loved that book. I get bored easily, so if Mr. Rothfuss can talk about making soap and keep me interested, you know he is excellent at his job. 

 

Also Foxen. Just . . . who doesn't love an unidentified little glowing object with emotions?

I got the impression that Foxen was actually a living thing (in a jar). But that might be a testament to Pat's ability to anthropomorphize*.

Remember when Kvothe first applied at the University and Kilvin asked about an Ever Glowing Lamp? I'm pretty sure that Foxen is an Alchemical Everglowing Lamp. That's why Kilvin wants to make one, because he knows that a student managed it, but disappeared before passing on the secrets. 

 

I don't have a lot of evidence for that though.

Same here, although Argent has a point with Auri having to 'feed' him. Maybe she gives him some kind of chemical that he reacts to, like some sort of bioluminescence?

War and Peace is one of my favourite books ever.

 

Maybe I should give Rothfuss a try. I've heard quite a bit that his books are slow, and I like more action in my Fantasy (I go for slow with Tolstoy or Thomas Mann ) but if they have enough depth to make up for it ....

I read this whole thread a while ago, and there are some very good theories. I'm not sure I've come across one that makes the connection between Ambrose and the Chandrian. I think Ambrose is Denna's patron. When Kvothe gives Denna back her ring, her excitement is subdued when he says he got it from Ambrose (as she realises she won't be able to wear it in front of her patron) Ambrose and Denna's patron are both praised for there dancing prowess, both accused of beating women, both highly influential, they both leave for Vintas at the same time. But I also believe that Denna patron is either one of the Chandrian or in league with. Which makes me think the Jakis line could be them or are in league with them. It's all going on in Vintas really as the Lackless line seem to have something locked away for centuries, and give the impression that they have fought against the Chandrian. Maybe the Lackless line know more of or are in league with the Amir.

There's a lot of theories that put Ambrose as king, or the king that Kvothe kills. I myself have been guilty of this but after another reread it came to mind that for Jakis to be throned, maer Alveron would have to have died or been killed as he was third in line while baron Jakis lies 12th now I think. Alveron is to large a character to just dismiss or maybe Alveron is who Kvothe actually kills, that may in turn bring Jakis closer or even put them on the throne. The only reason I can see Kvothe killing Alveron is if his life is put in danger by him, I could see meluan Lackless playing a hand in that.

I have a few more theories swimming around but I'll leave it there for now

Has anyone toyed with the idea that Kvothe is a fraud? God help Patrick if that's the way it ends up. I know it's unlikely but there are a few reasons why this could be. He's made it quite clear that he embellishes stories, that he for the most part built his own reputation. He knew exactly how long it was going to take him to tell his story. Every piece of his story could be a past fabrication of his own making. I know we haven't had the pleasure of finding out what happened to Sim, Wil, Fela, Mola Devi and the rest of the characters that would be able to confirm some of what he's saying as fact which is strange. If someone really wanted Kvothe's story and he was presumed dead at worst, best in hiding then there would written accounts of interviews with all these people to try and find some truths to the legend. Personally I do not like this idea and would be disappointed if it turned out this way, I was just wondering if anyone had thought of this possibility?

Some Evidence Kvothe really is The Kvothe:

• Kote/Kvothe does destroy all the evil spider demons things that attack him and Chronicler.

• He does have a lot of scars.

• Kote figures out Chronicler's unique shorthand in moments

• Bast. Full stop.

All that said - I still take everything he narrates with a grain of salt.

Haven't read this massive thread but I did read the Kingkiller Chronicle books. I loved the first one the second one I finished and all I could think was what the heck did I just read. I do not think a single meaningful thing happened that answered any questions I had from the first book. The sex with a fae was way too detailed, long and unbelievable even for a fantasy book. All that being said I can't even say I didn't like it. I mean I didn't like the story but still liked the writing. It's one of the weirdest reactions I've had after reading a book.

Of course I'll buy the third book the day it's released I'm sure.

So I found the two books grinning at me in a bookstore (yep, the English version in a German store; that's what you get when living in a university town) with a nice red low price sign. Somehow, they now sit on my TBR pile. Sneaked in there when I wasn't looking, I suspect.
