Hi all

In a comment thread on Reddit, Brandon gave a small excerpt from WoR in Morse code. I know this is quite old, but I hope this is still new to some people

Which apparently translates to:

"Each time you allow this," Amaram said, "it drives a wedge between him and the throne." Amaram took Dalinar by the arm, stopping him from continuing forward. "We have bigger problems than you and Sadeas, my friend. Yes, he betrayed you. Yes, he likely will again. But we can't afford to let the two of you go to war. The Voidbringers are coming."

...which is kinda important. Amaram knows about the Voidbringers!

Anyway, hope this is new information for some of you, I haven't seen it discussed in this forum yet.

Sorry, you're right. But is did get moved over very quickly. I think that this is one of the more important quotes we've seen so far from WoR. A Lighteyes that believes that the Voidbringers!! And a shardbearer at that.

How does Amaram know about the voidbringers? What exactly is his connections to the ghostbloods? Jasnah has spent years researching the voidbringers, I want to know what makes Amaram so sure.

Also it changes how I see an Amaram/Kaladin interaction going. To Kaladin, Amaram is clearly a bad guy - but he appears that he will be a good guy in the long term, especially to Dalinar. That is going to be a very interesting relationship...

I believe the source of Amaram's information is Taravangian.

The support I could find for this conclusion follows.

In the prologue Gavilar's first suspect about the source of his assassination is Thaidakar, followed by Restares and then Sadeas.

The king coughed.  "You can tell ... Thaidakar ... that he's too late."

"I don't know who that is," Szeth said ...

The king frowned.  "Then who ... ? Restares? Sadeas? ..."

In Chapter 51, Amaram is apparently working with Stormwardens and Restares and against Thaidakar and the Ghostbloods:

"... why Thaidakar would risk this?" Amaram was saying, speaking in a soft voice.  "But who else would it be? The Ghostbloods grow more bold. We'll need to find out who he was. Do we know anything about him?"

"He was Veden, Brightlord," the stormwarden said. "Nobody I recognize. But I will investigate."

...

"It took hours to decide, but Restares is right - this is what must be done, For the good of Alethkar."

This gives us two apparent factions:

  1. Thaidakar and the Ghostbloods, who include the passionate ardent assassin Kabsal and Shallan's father.
  2. Restares, Amaram and some stormwardens

Now consider the Taravangian interlude:

Trall stepped back and the testers approached; a group of three Stormwardens in purposefully esoteric robes and caps. They presented for him a series of pages covered in figures and glyphs. ... He turned the problems over to the Stormwardens who consulted them softly. They turned to Trall.

"He is fit to serve" proclaimed one of the Stormwardens. "He may not change the diagram, but he may interact outside of supervision, may change policy and pass judgement."

Trall nodded, looking at Taravangian.

"Do you accept this assessment and these restrictions your Majesty?"

"I do."

Trall nodded, then stepped back, allowing the serving woman to set out Taravangian's morning meal.

The trio of Stormwardens tucked away the papers he’d filled out then retreated to their own cabins of the ship.

Taravangian seems to rely/trust a group of stormwardens to serve him.

The simplest solution is that Restares is a code name for Taravangian or an associate and that he has organized some stormwardens.

If different groups of stormwardens are serving different factions and Taravangian is not associated with Restares, then I imagine Restares is the likely source of information about voidbringers.

idk which part of the book this is.

so if it is in the 2. part of the book, or even near the end, lots can happen before this.

i dont think this part will be before Jasnah and Shallan arives.

no lighteyes would speak about a "voidbringer threat" without some widespread backup/acceptence of voidbringers.

he would need to fear to realy sound crazy.

so maybe there is even some encounter with voidbringers before this happens.

This is exactly what I am assuming. My guess (which obviously might be terribly wrong) is that there will be one (or more) voidbringer attack(s) previous to this exchange or at least some kind of voidbringer-human encounter. Also, I cannot begin to describe how excited this prospect possibility has me.

  • 1 month later...

I imagine that the Parshendi, may unlock some new form, that may be better at war, or different than what we've seen and people begin to think they are the Voidbringers. I don't think the Parshendi are the Voidbringers, though I know that is a very common belief atm.

Well, there are several different ways that Amaram could reach the conclusion that a Desolation is imminent.

We have Taln of course. Depending on how credible people find what he has to say. I'm assuming a Herald knows a few tricks that ordinary Shardbearers don't, which may sway the minds of some important people even if they try to discredit him publicly.

We have the stormwardens. They are considered to be wise and knowledgeable people. If enough of them become convinced that a desolation is imminent and espouse this belief, people will take notice.

We have Taravangian, who may or may not have a code name, but probably does considering how vulnerable his city state is to the more warlike nations which surround it, and how deeply he dabbles in the politics of those nations.

There is this quote by Crysanja which is also a very valid point.

From what I understand Jasnah and Shallan will be nearing the Shattered Plains at the beginning of Words of Radiance. This means that we will have at least a short time skip between these book. During this time, Dalinar will most likely have been pronounced High Prince of War. Dalinar will at the very least be organizing how the codes will be enforced throughout the camps. Kaladin will have begun training with Bridge Four, begun organizing the rest of the bridgemen, and established Dalinars honor guard.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jasnah and Shallan arrive with Amaram. I suppose there is an outside possibility that she may sail to The Shallow Crypts or New Natanan before making her way overland, or even through Shadesmar which I find unlikely. If she travels to Karanak or Dumadari though, she will need to pass through Alethkar to reach the Shattered Plains in  the Frostlands (Nantanatan). We know that bandits are a concern, so I doubt that Jasnah will travel such a distance without an escort. Amaram is also traveling to the Shattered Plains, so it would make sense for Jasnah to attach herself to Amarams army since Amaram and Dalinar seem to be on good terms, and it is unlikely that news of Sadeas betrayal would have reached Alethkar yet.

I don't really think that Jasnah will volunteer her belief that a desolation may be on its way to Amaram outright, she seems more subtle and intelligent than that. I don't doubt that she would leave him with the clues he needs to put things together on his own as additional evidence mounts.

As far as Kaladin and Amaram are concerned, I can see one of two things occuring. Either Amaram will have heard of Kaladin Stormblessed, the man who lived through a highstorm and saved Dalinar's army, as well as the position he holds in Dalinars household, connect this to the man he took his Shards from, and takes precautions. Or He doesn't, and fails to recognize Kaladin, who was just a squad leader prior to killing the Shardbearer. Kaladin has been hiding his brands behind his hair, so this is entirely possible. In the latter case I think Kaladin will grin and bear it rather than attack a guest of the man who traded a Shardblade for his freedom. At least initially.

And who took that freedom away to begin with? Dalinar may have sacrificed hiw Shard for Kaladin, but Amaran sacrificed Kaladin's freedom and his men for his own greed. If Kaladin dosn't go beserk at first sight of Amaran, he will accuse and challenge him Im betting. oh the look on Amaran's face will be priceless. Would have made a great cover for WoR.
