Jim Butcher, Small Favors.

I read both Proven Guilty and White Night yesterday, and they were really good, especially Proven Guilty.

Into the Fire, by Richard Laymon. Man I have never read a book that needed editing so badly. It's not a great book, not even a good book really, but it's Richard Laymon, and he's one of the ones I go to when I need a break from more serious stuff.

I have to agree with Shivertongue about Gardens of the moon. I couldn't get past about 150 pages or so. I went into it with a lot of high expectations and they were all dashed pretty quickly. I've heard so much good about it once it gets going though that once I've finished what's currently on my plate I'd like to find a detailed plot summary of Gardens and see if Deadhouse is any good. If not I'll do the same thing and try book 3, but that's as far as I'm gonna go.

read WoR as fast as possible and get all the juicy goodness. The only problem with that is that now I have to go back and read it with the attention it deserves rather than the excitement I felt first off. ... not so much of a problem though, more of a bonus really, I suppose.

Deadhouse Gates starts a totally new arc with new characters (except for one or two) and a new setting, so you don't need to have read Gardens of the Moon. House of Chains (book 4) continues that arc while Memories of Ice (book 3) continues the one from Gardens, though House sort of brings both together, so I suppose it is easier to read after Memories. Midnight Tides starts the 3rd main arc of the series and is independent of the first four books.

Some people have recommended to read Deadhouse Gates, House of Chains, Gardens of the Moon and Memories of Ice instead of the publication order. Personally, I still prefer the latter because of those hints you don't need to understand the respective books but are part of the overall world.

I just finished both Divergent and The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by Veronica Roth and N.K. Jemisin, respectively. Typically, I have one book in play on my iPad (while I work out at the gym) and the other in play in either HC or pb (while I lay out in the sun). So, now I'm reading both Insurgent and The Broken Kingdoms.

Finally finished The Bonehunters (yes I'm a slow reader). Solid Malazan installment. Now on to Red Seas Under Red Skies, the sequel to The Lies of Locke Lamora.

Told you BH was awesome!

I'm on Alera 2 re read. damnation I love this series.

The Bonehunters had more consistent narrative momentum throughout than most of the books thus far. I would definitely place it pretty close to Memories of Ice, though not quite on the same level. It's about the same as Deadhouse Gates. So far, I order the books MoI, DG+BH, MT, HoC, GotM. I'm looking forward to Reaper's Gale!

Started The Lies of Locke Lamora today. It's been on my list for a very long time, but I finally started it. My reading time has been somewhat diminished lately, so I hope I get to finish it before Butcher releases Skin Game.

I'm reading White Sand right now. After that is Aether of Night and then I am going to try to find a good excuse (a vacation or long car/plane ride) to really really focus on a Malazan read. It looks like it would fit me well, but I had to learn the hard way that it's not something you can audiobook-multitask. I'd have to really focus. So lots coming up.

I thought Lies was excellent. It's a nice quick read. Good enough to pull me in to book 2! It is very different for a fantasy novel, but you should enjoy it.

I like the writing style a lot. This counts for much when I read new authors - even if the story leaves something to be desired (which doesn't sound the case with Lynch), style alone can pull me through. For some reason, the other way around doesn't always work for me.

I agree. If the story is readable, I don't care too much about the story so much. Lynch definitely pulls off both very well. (And of course, so does Brandon.)

Lies was an extrodinary debut book. I wish the other 2 were on that lvl but most will say they aren't. Red Seas I really enjoyed but after that 5 yr wait for Republic I was happy to get back in but it failed me personally.

Actually, most of what I've been reading these days has been fanfiction or else comic books. But in terms of actual, hard-copy books?

Making very slow progress through Temple of the Winds by Goodkind; slow meaning 'hasn't finished chapter one yet'.

The reason for such slowness?

"Wow, I haven't even opened Shadow Rising yet. I should probably do that."

I'm almost done with TimeGod by L.E. Modesitt J.R. and I absolutely love it. Probably the best time travelly book I've read- back to the future obviously takes best time travel story of all time. I'm also about to start Winds of Dune.

I've had the Traitor Spy Trilogy by Trudi Canavan chilling on my bookcase for ages. Finally started reading it this weekend! Not sure if it was to avoid Uni work or if I actually enjoyed it that much, but I finished it in a day.

Now on the second book, The Rogue.

I just finished reading Poison Study by Maria Snyder and The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman, both of which I really enjoyed. I wanted to get my hands on the Golden Compass Movie but I heard that it was pretty bad. Poison Study was really great. It is about a girl who becomes the food taster for a King.

I cannot wait to start reading Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss and to read several more books in Attolia series by Megan Whalen Turner.

Finished Red Seas Under Red Skies. I was not disappointed, it was a good book, but it wasn't what I wanted - or expected. Which is okay, of course.

Started Jim Butcher's newest installment of the Dresden Files (#15), Skin Game. I expect to be done with it by the end of the day. It's... Dresden doesn't need recommendations, if you like one, you like them all. Though I did feel like one of the big plan reveals (you know, the part near the end when the main character either figures the entire puzzle out or tells you how he maneuvered the different pieces so it all works out for them) was a little out of the blue. It wasn't foreshadowed well, at least in my mind. Or, rather, it wasn't foreshadowed as well as some of the other big reveals from the previous books (e.g. Cold Days was excellent in that regard).

I just started a book called S. by Doug Dorst. I haven gotten far enough to make a decent judgement on the book but it seems good so far.

Only in cosmere/alcatraz swears generally.

I generally have to reign in my speech on a new board. Lol on Malazan boards we can everything we want to without getting the ban hammer but on TheForce.net I've been fussed at over the yrs saying anything worse then damnation. I'm very free with my F Bombs lol.
