1. What groups? ;)

I expected a non-answer.......but fair. I suppose some things are not within reach of mere mortals......

Spoiler

..or are they? Heed this oath Chaos, Lord Ruler, you will not find rest till the day I find the lost groups, and start some kind of revolution using the power their eldritch knowledge granted me. Heed my oath, and fear me.

....though that sounds like a lot of work so...maybe not.

*nod* You hid them. Like you hid (and/or removed) the old groups of ArdentWorldbringersObligator, and Returned. Fun stuff. More secrets to be uncovered. :P

Well those ones were just removed rather than hidden from search.

How many hours a day do you usually log on the Shard? How much of that is moderation/administration and how much is posting?

So do those groups actually do anything, or is that not something we need to know about and should leave alone?

how does one become a moderator or an administrator?

There is currently no application process. We tend to notice standout members of the community and elevate them because of their actions. There are quite a lot of factors involved.

On the forums itself, not very much any more, to be honest. I do check it about daily, especially the 17th Shard discussion board in case there are issues. I am significantly more active in Discord these days and that is a much, much larger timesink for me than the forums proper. It's just faster and easier, really. So much of the time I am on the forums it's because of a report.

I would say no.

They did do something, though the functions are not relevant anymore. You don't know need to know about them and it is basically irrelevant anyway now.

How much time are you usually on the Shard discord on an average day? Are you active on other discords, or mostly just 17s?

What's your favorite mathematical concept to teach?

Which coppermind page that you've written (or written a lot of) are you most proud of?

What was the last food you ate?

Yay questions! I've been waiting for more for quite some time.

So what model of gravity to you support?

(Universal Attraction, General Relativity, Gravitons, etc)

Hmmm I don't know if this question is necessarily phrased correctly. Newton's universal attraction idea isn't wrong per se, but it just begs the question as to how or why that happens. General relativity is very, very well tested. It's not up to me to support or not. It's a fact that it works that way, and every time you are using GPS, they need to do relativistic corrections to make it accurate.

I never did a GR class though--that's graduate level physics, and I only did a physics minor. It's extremely complicated. Fusing GR with quantum mechanics is of course a big deal but until something is testable, I'm not worried about it. But GR? That's just how the universe works. My belief or support is irrelevant when people can test and measure the curvature of spacetime and verify it matches what the theory says. It's been shown to be correct for over a century!

Oh man... I'm on Discord so much. A lot, I'd say. Mostly just the 17S Discords and its associated Discords.

Mathematical concepts: I love teaching sequences/series in Calculus 2, but I do also love me some multivariate integrals and line and surface integrals in Multivariable Calculus. Hard to pick between those. I like subjects that a good teacher can give you a lot of good intuition on the subject, rather than something that like, you can just read the examples in the text and be golden.

Coppermind page? Oh man. I have so little time for Coppermind work these days... Looks like my last major article was the Ba-Ado-Mishram one for RoW. I am extremely proud of that page and I imagine that will be top priority for me to work on on any Stormlight release. Someday I'll write a Paalm article and rewrite the Shard article, I guess. I was very proud of my 2014 Cosmere page but Stargazer did an excellent revision on it that was very good and needed.

Last food: It was this delicious beef stew, this beef bourguingnon (oof, French spelling!). We made it Sunday and man it is so good.

Keep more questions coming. I need distractions from this hellish semester.

1) Which of Brandon’s unpublished works have you read?

2) If you got the Kickstarter swag boxes, which one are you looking forward to the most?

3) Whats your favorite type of meat? (And in what form?)

You have some knowledge of physics, right? What branch of math is it? Would AP Physics be a bunch of algebra and systems of equations, or something else?

Let's assume that if you ran for President you would win, would you do it?

That seems like a lot of stress, and I'm already stressed out in a pretty low stress job of teaching, compared with like, jobs where you make decisions where people can die and things like that. Scary stuff. Say what you will about politicians, but I don't think many people truly can be politicians and survive the stress and hate of it.

1. Hmmm... Dragonsteel, White Sand. I have not read Aether.

2. I did buy the swag boxes but hard to say what I'm excited for. I bought it for the collection aspect. Plus, then I can do unboxing videos for you.

3. Beef is lovely. I do love me red meat. Steak is amazing. That said probably the meal I could eat endlessly would just be spaghetti with a meaty red sauce.

Who's your favorite Pokémon?

Espeon or Jolteon. Probably Espeon. I'm quite fond of the Eevee evolutions and I make space in my team to include one if possible.

Hmmmm so there is a bit of a problem with the premise of your question. I wouldn't say physics is a branch of math, for the same reason chemistry isn't a branch of math. All those science classes talk about things that happen in nature that you wouldn't get in a pure mathematical sense of things. Newton's laws of motion, for example, are purely a physics thing. Of course, we model these things with math, but I wouldn't call that a branch of mathematics.

Now in practice, what you do in physics, there is a lot of math. There's algebra, calculus. All sorts of things when useful. Physics really goes like this: you have a set of core principles and are applying them to different problems or situations. It's much less the "oh I saw an example just like this, I'll do the same thing with the numbers different" that many classes tend to devolve into, but rather the homework is more exploratory in using those general principles to do cool stuff.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense, and sorry about the way I had worded the question. I see now how the way I said it was wrong, I had been trying to ask what kind of math is most utilized, but it came out as asking what math it was.

Do you enjoy physics?

Oh, you're fine.

I always enjoy banning people who are complete jerks and are totally unapologetic about it. Those are the easiest bans. Don't want to be kind and respectful? Okay, you can go somewhere else. Cheers!

I don't know if that qualifies as "ridiculous" though. There was an actual Nazi we had to ban a while back. Kind of blew my mind how horrible some people in the world could be, but I guess that's not immensely surprising.

1. Easy! The Shardcast channel.

2. I'm basic: cheddar or Swiss.

3. It eventually comes up that I make content and such so I'd say yeah. I don't tend to advertise it unless relevant.

Right gotcha. Depends what level. You will definitely do a lot of algebra. But as it progresses you'll use a lot more math. Calculus is very foundational and makes physics much simpler. You can get away with memorizing way less.

Physics is fun! It can be quite hard though. That's why I switched to being a math major.

Why have you never read Aether of Night?

Lots of other stuff to read and do. Brandon's old works are... fine, but it's pretty low on the priority list. There's way too much other stuff to do.

Plus, I'd rather see a canonical, good story, than one Brandon thinks is bad.
