Trizee
I thought it would be fun if we would all post the names of the stories (novels, novellas, novellettes, short stories) we are writing, plan to write, or have written. The idea is that people can say whether they would take a book with that name printed on the spine off the shelf to take a look at or not. And we can also make reccomendations for slight changes. So here's my list: A Clash of Beings (Trilogy) The Winter Wars Light’s Champion A Hope for Stone The People of Indura (Collection) Sword over Spell M King Captain Foundation Sentence Earth and Steel/ Steelwar/ Goldsteel (Can't decide what to call this- tell me which you like most) Kill for Salvation Death Incarnate Facial Paradoxes Narcissus He The Other Humans I’m Not a Witch! Glaring at the Survivor he/him
Nice. I'd take... A Clash of Beings (and all books) and Goldsteel as the top two. Ice, Air, Fire, Thunder- Don't sound all that original or interesting, I like te other series names (Dragonprince) though. Name titles- The titles of the DotD books being "name and the x" kind of puts me off, it alll sounds a bit childish. It only works if you have an awesome name (Paradox Flint is pretty good), so I would suggest cutting the name and just leaving what comes after (the x ). Same with the AKA thing, just give it one name. Edited October 3, 2012 by Trizee

Comatose he/him
Cool titles, I wish I was that good with them. Titles and names are always the part I have the most trouble with. As for the names in the Death of Dragons series, I think the names thing works, depending on what you are going for, but I like the idea of dropping the first part, and just having the "x" as Trizee put it. One problem with that is that you might have two books entitled "The Last Dragon" or "Last Dragon." That might be okay, or not, since they are in different sub-series, but that's up to you. I really liked "The Storm of Five," for some reason. It sounds cool. Personally, I'm kind of turned off by any title with generic bits like: "element(s)," "heart," "steel," "sword," etc, but sometimes they can be used to good effect. Trizee, I really like Sword over Spell (even though it has 'sword' in it), but not The Winter Wars. For some reason one alliteration works for me and the other doesn't. I also liked "A Hope for Stone" and "Death Incarnate."
Glaring at the Survivor he/him
Isn't it ironic how we're all doing what everyone says not to do? We're judging books by their titles.
Silk she/her
I'm horrible with titles and tend not to give my projects titles until after I've written a complete draft (sometimes not even then--I've got at least a couple complete drafts that've been sitting, unnamed, on my hard drive for years). So, here's a list of my projects that actually have titles: Weregild Passage to Zero Neid Just and Only Something Subdued about the Sun Cobwebs and Silhouettes False Positives (the only exception; I haven't written this yet) Fall Stars Fall The Ringing Horn --- I really don't choose books based on titles (most of what I read these days I pick based on recommendations/reviews) so I'm not picking titles that I'd grab off a shelf, really; I'm just picking out ones that I think are aesthetically appealing: Foundation Sentence (though I have to admit, I initially reread it as 'Sequence'), I'm Not a Witch!, Age to Age We Fall, Beyond the Barrier of Mist. I agree with Trizee, by the way--the "Character's Name and the Something Something" formula sounds, well, I wouldn't say childish, but it definitely sounds like children's literature. Which may be something to keep in mind if you don't intend that series to be kidlit. Also, you series writers--I dunno how you do it. Even the idea seems exhausting. I'll stick with my stand-alones, thank you very much.
Glaring at the Survivor he/him
Haha. I'm still writing the first book of my series. But I'm taking a break off for about half a month to write part of another book,t hen I'll go back to Paradox Flint and the Oathbound Dragons. (Wuld it work if I keep the name in that title, but not the other ones? Because I've had that planned for a looong time. )
Silk she/her
Hmm, tough to say. People are people to the "Character Name and ..." being a part of every title in the series, so doing something different might trip them up. On the other hand, since Oathbound Dragons is the first in the series, you might be able to get away with it there.
Guenhywvar
Generally, I will read most books recommended to me, or those by authors I've already read/liked. However: A Clash of Beings (Trilogy)The Winter Wars - turns me off slightly; it reminds me of Winter Warriors by Gemmell. Now I like Gemmell a lot, and I do dislike when books have such similar titles... Light’s Champion - okay, might pick it up, probably wouldn't though, depends on how much time I had as it is a so-so title in my opinion, lots of fantasy books have a champion of the light.. A Hope for Stone - I like this, definitely something I would pick up The People of Indura (Collection) Sword over Spell - again, I like this, I would pick it up. M - doesn't grab my attention, just makes me think that you have run out of names to call things.. Or took the first thing that popped into your head.. King Captain - bot too keen on this one, not sure what it is about it though... Foundation Sentence - this interests me, although it would be a maybe, again depending on time. Earth and Steel/ Steelwar/ Goldsteel (Can't decide what to call this- tell me which you like most) - I'm not that keen on any of them to be honest, they grab my attention, but not all of that is good attention. I might read the blurb, but I probably wouldn't.. Out of the three though, probably Earth and steel. Kill for Salvation - this sounds interesting, I would probably read the blurb, and depending on that, the book. Death Incarnate - again, interesting title. Facial Paradoxes - This one probably intrigues me the most, and so definitely the blurb, probably even the book if I like that. Narcissus - Not too keen on this one, but this would depend on time as well. He - no, this turns me off, much like 'm' The Other Humans - could be interesting, so probably blurb if I had time. I’m Not a Witch! - I like the sound of it, and so yes to pick out and read blurb, probably even the book. The Death of Dragons (Mega-Series) (I'll just say a yes/no/possibly to the mega series, but in general I agree with dropping the first bit, and just have the 'x') The Death of Dragons, Series 1: DragonPrince Paradox Flint and the Oathbound Dragons - possibly Paradox Flint and the Awakened One - yes Paradox Flint and the Drage of Fire - yes Paradox Flint and the Ends of the World and Beyond - no Paradox Flint and the Last Dragon - no The Death of Dragons, Series 2: Thunder Thilar Grudge and the Storm of Five - possibly Thilar Grudge and the Many Blessings - no Thilar Grudge and the DragonLord of Lightning - no Thilar Grudge and the Gale of Thunder - possiby Thilar Grudge and the Last Dragon - no The Death of Dragons, Series 3: Fire Max Forduas and the Days of Old - maybe Max Forduas and the Cursed Dragon - maybe Max Forduas and the Journeyer DragonPrince - no Max Forduas and the Knights of Camelot - maybe Max Forduas and the Mountain of DragonBreath - possibly The Death of Dragons, Series 4: Light, Darkness, and Rage Kyle Fell and the Book of Secrets - blurb Kyle Fell and the Tower of Gila - no Dylan Fell and the Forest of Raze - maybe Dylan Fell and the Meadow of Evil - poossibly Dylan Fell and the Day that Mornings End - possibly Riley Cast and the Anger of DragonKind - probably The Death of Dragons, Series 5: Air Arrow Karl and the Day of Night - maybe Arrow Karl and the Core of Death - maybe, but not likely Arrow Karl and the Descendants of Zar'Deeath. - no Arrow Karl and the Knight of Celdra - probably no Arrow Karl and the Screaming Plains - possibly The Death of Dragons, Series 6: Ice Saber Drent and the Glaciers of Myth - maybe Saber Drent and the Castle of Ice - no Saber Drent and the Throne of Dragons - maybe Saber Drent and the Blizzard of Fire - probably not The Death of Dragons, Series 7: Stories of DragonKind The Fall of DragonKind - maybe The LordSteel Corporation - no Part 1: Righor Steel, AKA RageBlade - maybe if the second title Part 2: Shane, AKA WindForce - probably not Part 3: Ben Diamond, AKA Platinum - maybe, but I doubt it Age to Age, We Fall - yes, indefinably, sound really interesting The Gates of Arraakiel Creation and Destruction - maybe Council of Elements - yes Beyond the Barrier of Mist -maybe That Which Lurks Beneath - probably Ten Deaths Trilogy Planet Earth - maybe not, just reminds me of the documentary, and as great as that is, I don't want that sort of thing in my fantasy books WorldHopper - probably - sounds interesting and different Magicians Death -`maybe, I'd probably pick it out, but I would probably be hesitant to read unless the blurb was really good. Last but not least: Weregild - maybe, interesting title. probably would pick it out and read blurb to find out more.Passage to Zero - doesn't sound that great in my opinion, so I would probably overlook it. Neid - maybe blurb to see what it's about, but only if I had time. Just and Only - sounds interesting, and would probably pick up to read the blurb. Something Subdued about the Sun - doesn't sound that great to me, probably over look it. Cobwebs and Silhouettes - this one I might, but again time dependent. False Positives (the only exception; I haven't written this yet) - sounds interesting, so I probably would read the blurb Fall Stars Fall - I would probably pick it up to read the blurb, sounds interesting. The Ringing Horn - I probably wouldn't pick this one up, not enough intrigue for me. My books will be as follows (hopefully) - most of these are only thoughts... Ackrilkorm (Death's embrace) saga: To embrace death Turmoil Death walkers Intertwined death Corruption Living Statues Stolen souls Equilibrium Another book that I can't think of a good name as of yet A trilogy as of yet unnamed The traveler Then unrelated books: Nightfighter (possibly 2) Symbiotic communication The silent Shadows.

TheSadDragon
Ok, I'll bite ^^ Before I start listing the various titles that caught my interest I should say that I almost never, if at all, buy a book due to it's title. In fact I am more likely to take a closer look at a book due to how the cover is designed. If it has nice cover art or a clean spine AND a intriguing title I am very likely to look closer at the book, reading the back of the book and such. That said, here are the titles that caught me eye. Trizee The Winter Wars Earth and Steel I would add "M" but that more or less caught my eye due to the Fritz Lang movie with the same name. Still a good name though. Stroniax Dylan Fell and the Day that Mornings End Age to Age, We Fall Beyond the Barrier of Mist That Which Lurks Beneath I would like to say that I have to agree with what the others have said regarding the naming pattern "Name and the X". I wouldn't say that it sounds like a YA book, though there are enough examples of that to make a case for it -- there are also plenty of examples of old 50's Stories using this pattern. For me personally the naming pattern brings with it some preconceptions that doesn't fit well with more serious types of Fantasy. Could still work great though! Would just like to add that I really like "Age to Age, We Fall". It is a great title. Silk Passage to Zero Fall Stars Fall False Positives The Ringing Horn Just plain good titles so don't really have anything to add here ^^; Guenhywvar Turmoil The Traveler The Silent Shadows Just want to add that "Equilibrium" is definitely one of those titles were I already have a clear reference in mind when I think -- thinking here of the movie with the same name. ^^; Disclaimer: I am more of an audio-book person and most of the book I have read in resent past have been by recommendation or because I have been intrigued by the series from another source, such as a movie adaptation or a game. As for my own titles: Short Stories Broken Circle A Flickering Light Rites Blade and Shadow Runeblade Series The Giant of Tyrel Swords of the Order Shadow of the Past The Blade of Shadows Steamtown Series A Missing Soul The Last Goodbye Of the none-short stories no project has yet to be finished. Current project I'm working on is "A Missing Soul". akoebel
I'm really bad at finding titles for my books. I expect my future editors to change them, so I'm really not that attached to each individual title. Titles (older to newer) as they appear in my computer folders : The Fifth Compendium Grim Assignment Shrouds The Emerald Shower (yukk....) Novel #4 (current working title is "Anti-Revolution") These are all unrelated works - the second one is a short story. I also don't buy books based on their titles (unless it's title is "XX and YYY" and I tell myself 'this is for kids' and I don't buy it). I mostly buy books based on their covers. Thank god I did find a Tor edition of WOT and not the Orbit edition or I would never have read it. Among the titles cited, those who speak most to me are : That Which Lurks Beneath (sounds like a Buffy episode name) The Blade of Shadows (cool image) False Positives (so many ideas there....) Intertwined Death (Don't know why)
Mandamon he/him
I generally buy books on recommendation, and if I run across one in the wild, by the cover art and design at first glance and blurb on the back for a second opinion. Pretending I were reading down the names of all these books in a bookshop, here's the ones that caught my eye: Trizee The Winter Wars A Hope for Stone Foundation Sentence Earth and Steel (but not steelwar/ Goldsteel) Facial Paradoxes (sounds cool) Stroniax Paradox Flint (I tend to be with everyone else on the XX and YYY, but I can be a sucker for a good name. I like Paradox Flint, but not the other ones. I can give or take dragons. If I see a mega-sequence like that all together, I would be wary. I have a lot of good books to read a not a lot of time to devote to a large series unless it's really good.) The LordSteel Corporation (it sounds like fantasy/corporate blended together, which seems interesting) Age to Age, We Fall (awesome name) Magicians Death Silk Passage to Zero Cobwebs and Silhouettes Fall Stars Fall Guenhywvar Intertwined death Equilibrium (I would pick it up because I liked the movie...) The traveler (I've read two other books with names along these lines and I liked them) Symbiotic communication The silent Shadows TheSadDragon Broken Circle A Flickering Light The Giant of Tyrel Swords of the Order akoebel The Fifth Compendium The Emerald Shower (I would to pick this up to see where the name came from) And here's mine... The Seeds of Dissolution The Best Kind of Present Short Stories Dreams of Dust Wish Hunting Reverie and Nocturne Escapade of Silence Remembrance of Past, Expectation of Future Cycle of Rebirth (Tentative compilation title of the above) I have three future works muddling around in my head (tentative and unformed titles...): Conjunction Physical Magic Allen's Bad luck (for NaNo 2012)

Thought
I've inserted my comments/thoughts: A Clash of Beings (Trilogy) - Nope. Sounds awkward, and too close to Martin's "A Clash of Kings" The Winter Wars - Nope. Reminds me of "Summer of My German Soldier" Light’s Champion - Nope. Sounds far too generic A Hope for Stone - Maybe. It sounds interesting, but then, it also reminds me of "Like Water for Chocolate." So, it feels like a good title for the wrong genre, to me. The People of Indura (Collection) - Like it, better than average chance I'd at least pick up the book. Sword over Spell - Like it, definitely a "thumb through" sort of name. M - Nope. Feels like it should be a Marvel Comics storyline or something. King Captain - Nope. Reminds me a little of "Captain Underpants" Foundation Sentence - Nope. Because I doubt your name is Asimov, and it would be weird to read a Foundation book by anyone else. Earth and Steel/ Steelwar/ Goldsteel (Can't decide what to call this- tell me which you like most) - Earth and Steel, maybe. Sounds military historyish. Kill for Salvation - Nope Death Incarnate - Nope Facial Paradoxes - Probably would get a pick-up for morbid curiosity's sake. Thus, the back cover would really need to sell it hard. Narcissus - Seems like an inauspicious name. He - Too short, no information about what the book might be like. The Other Humans - Maybe. I’m Not a Witch! - Probably, but then I'd realize that it's a line from Monty Python, and feel cheated. Tell me what you think! - No, definitely not. Just don't like this one as a title. The Death of Dragons (Mega-Series) - Nope. Would probably actively avoid picking it up. Dragons in general sound too cliche. Paradox Flint and the Oathbound Dragons - OOo, "Paradox Flint" ... oh, dragons? Nope. Paradox Flint and the Awakened One - Nope. "Awakened One" sounds interesting, if it wasn't for that pesky "dragonprince" bit. [...] Thilar Grudge and the Storm of Five - Nope. "Storm of Five" by itself, maybe. [...] Thilar Grudge and the DragonLord of Lightning - Might get a pick up, in respect for Edrick. Then I'd sadly put it down and walk away. [...] Max Forduas and the Mountain of DragonBreath - Nope. DragonBreath sounds too campy. [...] The Death of Dragons, Series 4: Light, Darkness, and Rage - Nope. Sounds like a Doctor Who ripoff. Kyle Fell and the Book of Secrets - If it wasn't associated with anything dragon, maybe. [...] Age to Age, We Fall - If it was a poem, yes, if not, no. [...] That Which Lurks Beneath - If its a lovecraftian horror, yes. [...] Ten Deaths Trilogy - Wait... the ten death trilogy? There's no reason that ten deaths can't happen in three books, but it sort of feels like my expectations are being denied. [...] A few odd Children's Books - Actually, I really like this as a title, though you didn't mean it as one. Weregild - I'd like Weregeld far more. Passage to Zero - Maybe. Neid - Makes me think of water nymphs, so there's a decent chance. Just and Only - Nope. Something Subdued about the Sun - Interesting, but works better as a chapter title for me. Cobwebs and Silhouettes - I like it. False Positives - Maybe, especially if the cover looks science-y Fall Stars Fall - Nope. Not sure what is trying to be communicated. The Ringing Horn - Almost. Still too vague, for me, but its close. Ackrilkorm (Death's embrace) saga: - Get rid of "Death's" and make Ackrilkorm easier to pronounce, and you've got gold here. To embrace death - Probably not. Turmoil - Nope Death walkers - Possibly. Pair it with a good cover and you've at least bought yourself a back-cover read. Intertwined death - nope. Corruption - nope. Short, but doesn't say enough. Living Statues - Don't Blink. Blink and you're dead. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't Blink. Good Luck Stolen souls - Better than average chance that I'd pick the book up. Equilibrium - Nope. Books are about conflict, this sort of tells me that there is no conflict. The traveler - Sounds too much like the ST:TNG character. Nightfighter (possibly 2) - I like it Symbiotic communication - Nope The silent Shadows - Maybe. Are these the piranha's of the air? For myself, naming a story/book tends to come dead last. But I do have the following two, one for an Epic Fantasy, and the other for a YA Urban Fantasy: Godbringer Where History Comes Alive Edited October 10, 2012 by Thought
akoebel
Weregild I would have used the 'Wergild' spelling, though I understand the other ones are equally valid. Did you chose this one by design (could be a great pun)? Anyway, this one escaped me. Great title!
Silk she/her
Afraid not--I didn't know at the time that there were alternate spellings. As much as I like the title, I've been wondering recently if I should change it; it sounds like a genre title, and the story in question is actually literary fiction...
Lady_Yasha she/her
I've never gotten past the whole idea of literary fiction before so I think your title is good. As for me, titles are the hardest part of books. I'm struggling to form one for a steampunk style novel I'm in the midst of outlining.
