TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 We believe in you, Mr. Sanderson! You can do it! 1
sanderfan she/her Posted May 5, 2015 Author Posted May 5, 2015 Aaaaahhhh!!! This is what happens when I leave this site for a few days, suddenly the book is almost finished (or the first draft at least). 93% and rising!
king of nowhere Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 ah, well, he will finish in his own time, when he feels like it. It's not like we can complain he's too slow. He mentioned an epic that shrinks on twitter. I wonder if the square-cube law will still apply. a person reduced in size that way would suddenly have superstrenght, at least compared to his size, because the muscles are still the same size compared to the rest of the body, but instead of needing to move a person by one meter with a contraction, they only need to move him a few millimeters. That's the reason insects can carry around hundreds of times their wheight, and they have smaller legs than oour in proportion. I wonder if you can use that concentrated strenght to tear up someone from the inside. Actually, probably you'd be suffocated by a drop of blood that just happens to cover you whole because of surface tension. there are downsides in the square cobe law. 1
vineyarddawg Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 This. It's very simple. I open the Word doc and do a word count to see how many thousand words it is. Then I type in that number for the percentage. For a Stormlight Archive book I divide the number by 3 or 4 to arrive at the percentage. Though occasionally Brandon wants to publicly lie about the completion percentage, like when he was writing The Bands of Mourning when he should have been writing Shadows of Self. Then I just ask Brandon what number he wants me to put, and I type it in. So, when it said 50% done on Shadows of Self, this could have really meant that Shadows of Self was 40% done and The Bands of Mourning was 60% done. So, how finished is "Unfinished Secret," then?
Blaze1616 he/him Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Aaaaaaannnnd, it's done! According to the man's twitter, anyways. 1
PeterAhlstrom he/him Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Brandon leaves the percentage bar to me, and I couldn't update it until I woke up. So, how finished is "Unfinished Secret," then? Less than a chapter. He'll probably start from scratch when he gets back to it. 5
Blaze1616 he/him Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Thanks Peter! It's an awesome feeling seeing the 100% bar on the website.
Voidus Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!*squeals like 13 yo fangirl with a crush* 1
wallyrocket Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Yep, he's done now. Then he went and watched the Avengers.
PeterAhlstrom he/him Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 He went and watched the Avengers right before writing the final 5 chapters. 6
Kobold King he/him Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 He went and watched the Avengers right before writing the final 5 chapters. Well as long as it got him into a suitably cinematic mood...
Blaze1616 he/him Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 (edited) He went and watched the Avengers right before writing the final 5 chapters. Considering he finished at 3 in the morning, according to Twitter, he had a late night. What this means is that while actual Brandon went to see Avengers, a Sanderbot finished Calamity. I wonder if they share a hivemind? Edited May 7, 2015 by Blaze1616 2
Zas678 he/him Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Also, here is a post that Brandon put on Reddit about the process of writing Calamity. EDIT- Wow, Brandon, 13k in a day? That's impressive. 1
Kobold King he/him Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 (edited) Also, here is a post that Brandon put on Reddit about the process of writing Calamity. There's some very interesting stuff there, like the fact that he'd published the first book before outlining the rest of the trilogy. That explains some of the differences between Firefight vs Steelheart I suppose. Now, to rant for a minute: I'm more than a little annoyed by the commenters further down the post talking about how Stormlight 3 coming soon is "the best news to come out of this post." But then, I suppose that's why I'm on a lovely forum like this one and not on Reddit. Edited May 7, 2015 by Kobold King
Zas678 he/him Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 My Mom is in that camp- she's sort of excited for other books to come out, but is really just waiting for Stormlight 3 to come out.
Kobold King he/him Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 My Mom is in that camp- she's sort of excited for other books to come out, but is really just waiting for Stormlight 3 to come out. I can understand anticipation for Stones Unhallowed, but I think that belittling all the content of a Calamity thread save for the tiny piece of Stormlight news is kind of disrespectful, both for fans of the Reckoners and for Sanderson himself. Maybe it's just me. 1

But then, I suppose that's why I'm on a lovely forum like this one and not on Reddit. Given that Brandon is an outliner, I had assumed he plotted out the entire trilogy before ever sitting down to pen Steelheart. Then again, as a discovery writer, I tend to see outliners as mysterious wizards with story-specific precognition that allows them to know every event before they write it. It does explain some of the differences between the first two books. Me too. Facebook is the exact same way, and it's maddening. Almost makes me want to spam his updates about Stormlight with questions about when Alcatraz 5 will be finished, but I don't plan on doing that. 2
Zas678 he/him Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Pretty sure it's done, just waiting on Tor to republish the original 4 so they can release 5. I've heard Januaryish for starting on republishing. 1

The key thing to remember is that you're better than them for not doing that. Not everyone can appreciate the greatness that is Reckoners. 2
