Delightful Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 I would have answered with wedding, charity event....... I knew about Kublai Khan! Why or how I have no idea but I've definitely heard the name before. 2
Blaze1616 he/him Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 I knew about Kublai Khan! Why or how I have no idea but I've definitely heard the name before. He was rather important in terms of the history for the region. I learned about him in a world history class.
Kasimir he/him Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 "IN Xanadu did Kubla KhanA stately pleasure-dome decree:Where Alph, the sacred river, ranThrough caverns measureless to manDown to a sunless sea.So twice five miles of fertile groundWith walls and towers were girdled round; And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree; And here were forests ancient as the hills,Enfolding sunny spots of greenery."--Kubla Khan, Samuel Taylor Coleridge 2
Titan Arum Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 My Economist brain started thinking of functions as well...unfortunately I couldn't come up with eight: 1) Cost Function 2) Utility Function 3) Cobb-Douglas Production Function 4) Profit Function 5) Revenue Function 6) Depreciation Function 7) I've run out of functions... 8) Wait, I need another? Sigh.
Elbereth she/her Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Well, since Kipper doesn't seem to be coming back to declare one of us correct, I guess I'll just go. I'll give two options, because most people haven't read the Silmarillion. 1) Name two of the Valar. (One of them is all over Lord of the Rings.) 2) Name four of Gandalf's names.

Elbereth she/her Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 You know, I would have accepted Gandalf as one of the names... Your go. Next time I'll make sure to make it harder.
Seonid he/him Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 1) Mandos Elbereth/Varda Manwe (I used to remember many of the others, but I haven't refreshed my LOTR knowledge recently - I think Yavanna is one of them, the tree one, and I know I'm missing quite a few) 2) Gandalf Mithrandir (I used to remember his Maiar name as well - I'm awful at this)
Elbereth she/her Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Well, I only asked for two. But there are around fourteen, so yeah... you're missing a few. (Manwe, Varda, Yavanna, Mandos, Lorien, Nessa, Vaire, Vana, Tulkas, Melkor (if you count him), Aule, Ulmo... and two more I can't remember right now.) Also, Kas beat you to the punch.
Kasimir he/him Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 You know what? I'm gonna be massively cheeky. Here's a test of how well you know your fellow Sharders: WLIU, name four Sharders who currently live/work in the UK Additional caveats: -If you live and work in the UK, you cannot add yourself to the list.-If you know, through personal/off-public forum reasons, that a Sharder is from the UK but they have not indicated so in public, please do not out them. Let's stick to people who are well and truly outed and practice Internet safety -...Please resist the urge to be more specific about where they are. (See: Internet safety.)Thanks, guys, and have fun
Elbereth she/her Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Um... Wyrm does, I think. And Bort. And I'm pretty sure Stink does, just from when he answers PMs. ...Does Kipper? That's four. Maybe.
little wilson she/her Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 To add to Elbereth's three (since Kipper lives in the DC area so is therefore American), there's also Orlok and Adamir. And JoeST.... But I'll let you pick the next question.
Elbereth she/her Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 (edited) You go. I just went right before Kas. EDIT: Also, you actually got four. Edited November 12, 2015 by Elbereth
little wilson she/her Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Okay. Name 7 Sharders who live/work in Australia. You cannot name yourself if you live/work there.
Kasimir he/him Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 (edited) Okay. Name 7 Sharders who live/work in Australia. You cannot name yourself if you live/work there. 1. Lightsworn Panda 2. Surgebound Rainspren 3. lord Claincy Ffnord 4. Elsa Steelheart 5. Delightful 6. Eolhondras 7. Haelbarde ...I am not responsible for any mispellings that might've arisen due to my habit of naming #1 Jain, #2 Karlin, #6 Eol and so on... >> I should also protest that the M'Hael properly lives in the Black Tower... Alright, time for something (somewhat different)... Representin' all the women: gimme the names of 10 female Sharders! Same additional caveats apply, guys: 1. I'm referring to gender here. If a Sharder does not identify as female, please do not cause them distress by including them in this list! 2. Sorry, ladies, you can't include yourself on the list 3. Safety above all: if a Sharder is female but does not want to publicly out themselves on the forum as female, please respect their wishes and not include them--this is, after all, just a game! I'll let this stand, but it should be noted that Lark does not identify as female, which is why I couched my question the way it did, in order that we remain respectful of our fellow Sharders. An easy substitution includes Elbereth, who is also female 1
Delightful Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 I'm officially in love with this mashup.
Seonid he/him Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 I'll let this stand, but it should be noted that Lark does not identify as female, which is why I couched my question the way it did, in order that we remain respectful of our fellow Sharders. Haelbarde he/him Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 (edited) WLIU, name 4 physicists who have made significant contributions to the study of wormholes. Well, Einsten and Rosen (thanks Avengers) would be two. And you didn't specify that they had to be non-fictional, so I'm sure Mckay and Carter contributed to things. WLIU how many versions of the Windows operating system have there been? Or someone could answer Seonid's question properly. Edited November 13, 2015 by Haelbarde 1
+Slowswift Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 Um... 6? The original, 95, XP, 7, 8, and 10?
Kasimir he/him Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 (edited) 1. Einstein, Rosen, Visser, Kip Thorne (he's the only guy whose full name I can reliably remember), probably Wheeler.2. Slowswift, you missed Vista and Windows 98 Come to think of it, wasn't there a Windows 2000 as well? Shucks, now I feel ancient Edited November 13, 2015 by Kasimir
Titan Arum Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 The Windows OS question is rather thorny and non-specific. Are you counting each iteration of a given number base? Are you including Windows Phone and Windows Mobile (which themselves had multiple releases). I'll answer using a base level, and if there were multiple editions of a given level, I'll denote it with an x: 1) Windows 1.0 2) Windows 2.x 3) Windows 3.x (my first version of Windows growing up was 3.1!) 4) Windows 9x (i.e. Windows 95 and 98...also included Windows ME) 5) Windows NT (this has multiple versions, and technically XP is one of them and Windows 2000). 6) Windows Vista 7) Windows 7 8) Windows 8 9) Windows 10 10) Windows Mobile 11) Windows Phone (the version of Mobile for Smartphones, which includes 7.x, 8.x)
Delightful Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Soooo I'm gonna revive this thread with: Name ten fictional characters who have died and then been brought back to life. (Multiple resurrections still only count as one).
RippleGylf she/her Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 (edited) EDIT: Gonna put this in spoilers... Probably a good idea. 1. The Doctor 2. Szeth 3. Jasnah 4. Flynn Rider (don't know if that one counts...) 5. Harry Potter 6. Jack Harkness 7. Rory Williams 8. Rose Tyler's dad (also a bit iffy...) 9. Lily Potter 10. James Potter 11. Remus Lupin 12. Sirius Black For those last four, you didn't specify how long they had to be alive again... I added two to make up for the iffy ones. WLIU Name 10 times that a Doctor Who companion has died. Yes, you can count the same companion multiple times. Edited November 26, 2015 by Ookla the Ensconced 1
