Since the terms of the game are to answer the question and if you get it wrong, post a funny picture, and those terms have been met, I'm just going to say this: Guangzhou, and here's a funny gif. Because i like gifs more. :)

And now, to get this game back on track, another question in the geography category.

WLIU, name 35 European capitals of sovereign nations.

Guangzhou was the missing city.

Posted

Apparently I should've done 40 instead of 35. I know some were missed (besides the ones already mentioned Liechtenstein's capital is Vaduz and Malta's capital is Valletta), but that was answered a lot faster than I'd thought it would be. So good job. :) Also, I was accepting Bern as the capital so you were good there.

So, did I get 15 with my substitute of Norwegian, or am I one short?

In case it's my go (I'm never exactly sure how this works) - I'll put a question in a spoiler.

WLIU:

Name 12 Kevin Spacey movies in which he acts (excludes voice-only performances, TV Movies and TV shows - cinematic releases only).

One short. But it's still your go, you just need to post funny pic. :)

Well, I don't even remember how exactly Kevin Spacey looks like, so I'll skip this one.

Since it's been 2 weeks, and no one's answered, how about you give the answer and supply a new one? :)

There are not 22 countries that the British haven't invaded. Right?

Invaded in this sense is a very broad term - it doesn't require them to be part of the empire, but were a military presence was achieved, either though force, threat of force, negotiation or payment.

There is a fairly well researched list that I'm basing it's off. According to said list, Sweden is the only country correct of those suggested by Robinski

I found the list, but I can't find the research it's based on. Do you know where to find it? And as far as I managed to find in last 10 mins (it was quich search), then this list looks like a bit of a stretch. The only instance of "British invasion" on my country I managed to find was a single battle 600 years ago (that my country won, btw.). However I'm not a historian, I might be wrong.

It's a rather entertaining book, researched by Stuart Laycock - 'All the countries we've ever invaded, and the few we never got round to'.

My understanding is that that battle would count for the purposes of this list - as do coastal raids by privateers, among other things.

15 is probably a stretch - 10 more reasonable, although I'm very happy to change the question if people think it more sensible?

Hmmm...22 countries that Britain has never invaded? I'm going to treat this like a thought experiment. Does South Sudan count? I know that Britain did invade Sudan since it was one of its colonies...but I know for a fact that since South Sudan is now its own country, Britain has not invaded an independent South Sudan. But, when did the research you reference occur? Hmmm...

1) Sweden (you gave us this one!)

2) Stans that don't include Pakistan and Afghanistan, because most people don't even realize they're countries

   2a. Uzbekistan

   2b. Krgyzstan

   2c. Tajikistan

   2d. Turkmenistan

3) Vatican City...because who'd invade them specifically?

4) South Sudan, because I don't think they've invaded South Sudan since it became it's own country in 2011

5) Timor Leste, for the same reasons in 4...it became a country in 2002, so I highly doubt they've invaded it.

6) Mongolia...it's really cold and hard to get there and it has the lowest population density in Asia...so why go when you've got a lot of cool things in China to invade?

7) Central African Republic...really hard to get to and a former French Colony, so unlikely to invade it

8) Mali...a former French Colony as well and land-locked. Britain surprisingly left a lot of West Africa alone, other than its own colonies in Ghana and Nigeria

9) Ecuador, there's got to be one in South America, right? And since it's on the west coast it's got to be harder to get to? Unless it's Bolivia because it is also land-locked and you have to pass through either the Andes or a lot of the Amazon to get to it.

10) Switzerland, because they've always been neutral right? Unless they went through Switzerland to get somewhere else? Or get money from the banks?

11) Liechtenstein, because it's small and easy to skirt around?

12) Andorra, for the same reason as in 11.

Boom. I must be right, no? Probably not...hahaha.

Suh-weet! I'd still argue that South Sudan and Timor-Leste count according to your original question ;)

WLIU, in honor of World Polio Day (Oct. 24th), what is the ONE disease that humans have successfully eradicated through vaccinations?

Huh. I wouldn't trust books like these, to be honest. Without a single reference like this, the author could very well conclude as well that Britain didn't invade Isengard and Valhalla, but they did invade Tír na nÓg. Or something like that.

Yes, I'm just complaining for the sake of complaining. I don/t like books like that. The whole "invasion" thing is so increadibly stretched, so you can include more countries, so the book sells better. Stupid.

I'm going to have to take issue with the definition. Myanmar has not existed as a country for very long. While Britain may have invaded Burma, it has never invaded Myanmar. I think the author's definition is rather imprecise. A raid, by definition, is not an invasion, there is no intention to occupy territory.

:P

Smallpox

Winner! You're up Shrike. However, I'm avoiding Hyperion.

Anyway, I wanted to give a softball question, because we're so close to eradicating polio. There hasn't been a new case in Africa in over a year and it's really only prevalent right now in and around Pakistan. Oh, and in case you're all looking for a laugh while honoring World Polio Day, here's a comic that xkcd created just for Bill Gates' blog:

Yay! As long as I don't win Smallpox.

New question, staying with the sciences: Name all eleven elements that are gasses at room temperature (roughly 22 degrees Celsius).

Finally the question I can answer.

H, He, N, O, Cl, Ne, Xe, F, Ar, Rn, Kr

WLIU, name all three taxonomic domains of organisms (proper names please). :)
