Edgedancer he/him Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 (edited) Neither have I, but you're farther along than I am. Though, harkening back to your previous post, the fact David said Newcago only saw a new Epic "once every four or five years" does put a damper on introducing Epic!Unicyclist and Epic!Revolution within such close proximity to each other. Especially since Lucy/Scribbler is a fairly new Epic, and Koschei and Reader both got their powers fairly close to one another. Maybe it'll be revealed later on that there are certain "spurts" where a cluster of Epics will gain their powers, and then it'll die down for a while? Yeah, there might actually be even more to that but I don´t know. The ones that finished the book may do but I don´t even want to know early. But there might be interesting implication´s for meta powers. Maybe. Edited January 7, 2015 by Edgedancer 1

You haven't even gotten to the most canonically upheaving details yet. The small number of new Epics is definitely a hitch in our plans. However, we could probably shrug this one off as a statistical anomaly. It doesn't seem to be majorly important to the cosmology.

I wouldn't know. But Steelheart and Firefight really hammer in the whole "Epics who use their powers are uncontrollable psychopaths" thing. I had a feeling Funtimes would be a part of it. From the beginning, I envisioned her as an Epic who actually likes people; whether that's inexplicable in canon will be determined. As I've worked it out, her backstory gives her a few reasons for how she is, for why she tries to fight the corruption. I knew she was an oddball from the very start, but it's looking like this book will decide once and for all whether or not she's too odd to exist in this universe. And, even though I've come up with some reasons for why it might work with what I knew from Steelheart, I'll be the first to admit I'm very nervous about what Firefight will tell me.

I don't think anything in Firefight definitively contradicts Funtimes' existence. Not any more than Steelheart does, at least. There are actually... a couple of things... that might... might... provide support for her possibility in canon. It's complicated. But just so you know, I wouldn't particularly care if the book specifically said "There has never been such an Epic has Doctor Funtimes" on the title page. I love her as a character.

"Might" is as strong an endorsement as any fanfic writer needs. (See: Fanfiction.net search results for "Dramione shipping.") Still, I want to try and be as canon-compliant as possible, even with a character as strange as Doctor Funtimes. The fact that precious little about her backstory has been revealed could work in my favor, though. I'm going to avoid posting her first flashback until after I've finished the book and figured out just what I'll need to change.

Well, there really isn´t anything stating it impossible, as far as I got, but the implication is very much there. Given how much Funtimes uses her powers. The strongest con, I have seen yet (and I´ll double spoiler this just to be safe, even if I don´t mention any events in particular) is that personal motivation to fight against it doesn´t really help, because that´s exactly what Calamitie´s influence wipes out, not some kind of magical voice in your head. Might of will might help against the early stages but only as much as it would do with drugs. Sure, you might be able to withstand the withdrawal from your first dosis but after taking it regulary? Good luck trying to abstain without someone forcing you. Edited January 7, 2015 by Edgedancer

I might have to change the timeline for her backstory, if that would help, or make other changes. I won't know until I've finished. I know I took a big risk with Funtimes. I knew I was taking the chance that she'd be entirely negated by later books, but....it still sucks, making a huge mistake like that. I'm not sure what I'll do if she's unfixable. Something, for sure, but I'm not sure what.

Not at all. Implausible? Perhaps, depending on exactly how your backstory went. But definitely not unfixable. I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you. I fear I may have over-exaggerated the situation to an extent, in which case I can only apologize for needlessly worrying you.
Mailliw73 he/him Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 One thing I enjoyed about this book was that it showed that some of the powers we have are actually very possible and do exist. You know which I'm talking about. Another was that the use of more ancient weapons(swords) are not only used, but seem to be somewhat popular among Epics. The most game-breaking thing is probably the number of and decency of the nice Epics we have here. The other thing Kobold said canbe easily tweaked in most cases.

I'm the one who made the character, after all; if she's unfixable, it's my fault for doing it, not anyone else's for pointing it out. Though it's good to hear she's not necessarily unfixable. Implausible I can deal with; I've shipped Lucentia with a hamster and Aldo with an undead dinosaur, for crying out loud! If she's merely implausible, I'll overhaul her backstory and change the direction of her characterization as needed. I can make it work. Its just....okay, what I have to say may sound whiny, and it's definitely an emotional sort of rant, it's below the spoiler. It's just that Funtimes was the character that started this RP. I know she's not my only character, and I'm sure this RP would have been just as successful without her. But still, she was my risk. I'd become so accustomed to playing it safe where writing was concerned, and with Funtimes, I finally decided to heck with it. I'll write about this insane, bizarro Epic who acts like a total wackjob and see what happens. And it seemed to be working. People loved her. I had fun writing her reactions to other Epics, to Nathan, to the world in general. It was fun, going against the grain. I knew there was a chance she'd be rendered impossible in canon, but it was still fun. I guess...I guess that even though I told myself I'd take whatever came, it's still not easy getting slapped with that rolled up newspaper. It's like, well, like finding out that Santa Claus is secretly a Nazi. I'll still enjoy Firefight, of course. I'm enjoying it already, and nothing will dim my love of this series. I've missed these characters, and I was always looking forward to this book for a chance to catch up with them. But if I learn that the only way to keep her canon compliant will be to have her murder Nathan in his sleep, then it'll still be hard. Edited January 7, 2015 by TwiLyghtSansSparkles 2
Kobold King he/him Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 (edited) Well, Funtimes could just have accidentally faced her fears and removed the corruption, right? CAREFULLY label spoilers from the end of the book. A lot of people still haven't read it. Can you edit your post and warn about major spoilers, quickly before anyone clicks that tag? Fatebreaker he/him Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Dangit, this is driving me crazy. All I need is 40 minutes to drive down the mountain to the bookstore, but my car currently lacks a few things required to make that trip, like wheels, a subframe, and a transmission. It will take me only an hour to finish the book, maybe two, I just need to get my hands on it. Fortunately, you can read the first 3 chapters on the barnes and noble for free.

But if I learn that the only way to keep her canon compliant will be to have her murder Nathan in his sleep, then it'll still be hard. It doesn't sound whiny at all. It's how I feel about reading about the character, and about characters of my own. Um... if I might go on the record expressing what may be an unpopular opinion... I'm more loyal to the canon we've established than to the canon Firefight established. There, I said it. I love the Reckoners books, but I feel like we've all invested a lot of work and love into our labors here. I know you're exaggerating to make a point when you talk about Funtimes murdering Nathan in his sleep, but... well, we've established motivations and personalities for our characters. If it comes down to a fight between canon and fanon on a level like that, then I'd say to enjoy Firefight as a novel but to ignore every word of it when interacting with this RP. I guess what I'm saying is this: Firefight is an awesome piece of literature, but so is this RP in its own way. The idea of retconning major events or changing our characters is almost nauseating to me; the soul and essence of What Happened in Oregon should remain intact. Sorry if I sound terse here. I'm feeling a bit depressed today and I'm worried about the RP being dragged in a very dark and unpleasant direction by the book's release. Hope I was able to express my concern and opinion adequately. 3

Ignoring the Big Thing™ completely is probably not necessary, like I may have implied before. It will definitely complicate matters though, and we'll probably have to spend a few days giving justifications for why various characters didn't fit in with it perfectly. No point fretting over it just yet though, which I keep forgetting. I hope you all find my defensive nature towards the RP understandable. So, onto another matter... will there be prizes given out to whoever namedrops Regalia and Obliteration in the RP the most during the next week or so? 2

"Regalia, Regalia, Re—yes?" "Why did you turn the name of the Epic who rules Babilar into a song?" "'Cause it's fun! Sing it with me! Regalia, Regalia, Regalia…" I win. I completely understand your defensiveness. It's hard not to be, honestly; we've invested a lot of time and effort into this game, and learning that canon is going to sink it…well, it's going to be hard. But, I will take what you and Voidus said to heart and not fret about it too much. I'm already enjoying Firefight immensely (what I've read while pretending to pick up groceries at Walmart, anyway ) and I'm already picking out which teddy bear I'll give my sister when she meets Obliteration. I'll give you guys my thoughts when I finish on Saturday or Sunday. I keep telling myself I'm pretty good at justifying things.
