Nitpicking Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 Battar is with the other 9 Heralds in the vision/on Braize. Doesn't she work for Taravangian now? Couldn't Odium just lean in and corrupt this vision at will?
Ookla the Invariably Tired Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 I thought the same thing when I read that. I think it might have something to do with the nature of oaths and bonds. Perhaps Battar's original oath to Honor can override her hasty agreement/oath made to Odium. Additionally, it seemed that the oathpact held strong despite all the heralds having at times wildly different views and outlooks. I would not be surprised if Battar attempted to make contact with Odium or vice versa, but the oath made by the other nine made it impossible. 1

Maybe Battar will get bored in this land without bribes and will decide to break. 2
Leuthie Posted December 26, 2024 Posted December 26, 2024 Batter was following Odium for the same reason Ishar picked up Odium's perpendicularity and used it: they're all insane. The new arrangement will allow them to heal and make decisions with right minds. I'm sure there will be issues, but I don't think Battar is special in all that. 2

Battar seemed to revel in her post-pathpact lifestyle. I get that all the heralds were tainted, but that doesn’t mean the heralds will snap back to who they were at the beginning of the war. It seems completely possible that Battar ends up realizing she actually likes who she became and decides to return to her life with Taravangian. At least some of the heralds should find themselves changed for the worse even without the blight from Ishar. Edited December 26, 2024 by teknopathetic 3

Couldn't Odium just lean in and corrupt this vision at will? We don't know. The best way to serve Taravangian would have been to refuse to join the new Oathpact and because of that I think she partially still takes up her responsibility of a Herald seriously, but it doesn't mean she's all good now. However, much of her insanity came from Ishar and the power of Odium corrupting him. Once Kaladin cleansed him, the madness of every Herald was lessened greatly - it's not fully gone, it's not healed yet, but it's better now. She should not be as greedy as she was when making that deal with Taravangian, but if that deal was a binding Oath, this means she has to work for Taraangian now even if she doesn't want to, otherwise it would mean breaking her Oath, which would allow Taravangian to destroy her. WaT ch 140: Quote Kaladin distinctly thought he heard, echoing through that failing bond, the gasps of eight other people as an unacknowledged darkness left them. An oppressive cloud that Ishar thought he’d been holding back, but had in reality been infecting every Herald. The blackness he’d absorbed from Odium centuries ago, by finding his pool of power. 2

DSCrankshaw Posted December 26, 2024 Posted December 26, 2024 Do the other Heralds know that Odium is now Taravangian? I know Szeth and Kaladin left before Wit figured out Rayse had been replaced, but I can't remember whether Nale and/or Ishar and/or the Wind figured it out and told them. If they do know, they may have reason to suspect Battar because of her previous connection to Taravangian. Otherwise, why would they suspect her? 1

Frankly, I have no idea what the answer might be. I would love to read what everyone else on these forums might think about that.
