While it was predicted that people would get pulled into the collapsing perpendicularity I still find it surprising that this happened to Gavinor, especially now that Lift was excluded from this group that gets to have a road trip through the spiritual realm. This makes me think that Gavinor is a very important character not just in this book but potentially the entire series.

Here's what I mean. From a narrative standpoint, all the characters have a goal in the spiritual realm. Dalinar and Navani are looking for Honor while Shallan and the Ghostbloods are looking for Ba-Ado-Mishram. But what about Gavinor? Obviously, he didn't intend to be here but regardless his presence has a purpose, but what is it?

A popular theory is the child-champion theory based on the death rattle.

Quote

I hold the suckling child in my hands, a knife at his throat, and know that all who live wish me to let the blade slip. Spill its blood upon the ground, over my hands, and with it gain us further breath to draw.

And while this could be the destination I'm more interested in the journey that Gavinor is about to go through.

If he is going to be the champion then how will going to the spiritual realm turn him into the champion? Additionally, I've always thought that Gavinor is too old to be considered a "suckling child" but spiritual realm shenanigans could explain this. Maybe make him appear younger whenever this scene takes place?

On the other hand, the child champion theory could be wrong. If so, that makes this even more of a mystery. How will Gavinor play into a journey to reform a shard? How will he help Navani and Dalinar? Will he pick it up himself (unlikely, but hey, why else is he here)?

Or maybe he'll be trappedin the spiritual realm and his arc will be paused until stormlight 6?

I would love to hear other thoughts and theories about why Brandon chose to have Gavinor join the journey in the spiritual realm.

maybe an Elhokar vision to settle his fate, it could be in a sequence where Dalinar and Navani have to confront Gavilar too.

One fact that got me thinking is if the other main characters even know that Gavinor was "sucked" into the Spiritual Realm.

Dalinar and Navani were transported to the SR together, same as Shallan, Renarin, Rlain and the GB... But Gavinor was with Lift and she has been left behind. Plus, with all the weird shenanigans there of time and space and Gavinor going there alone it could be troublesome.

Maybe a gap of opportunnity for Odium regarding the baby-champ theory. Or, on the other hand, Dalinar comming back to the SR in a rescue mission, not being able to retourn in the 10th day an thou resigning from the contract.

I think time will go slower for him cause him to age at least a decade

I just wanted to point out that due to Renarin's and Rlain's presence in Urithiru, as well as directly at the scene of this event, the Shards shouldn't have been able to foresee it. So, it couldn't have been part of Odium's plan.

I am not sure if and to what degree this constraint applies to death rattles, but it really should, shouldn't it?

True but that doesn’t mean that a shard can’t take advantage of it now that has occurred

i think a child-champion would violate the intent, in which the contract was made. They are suposed to be actual fighting champions, not pawns. Besides that would not be a very good plot point.

I think the Ghostblood will snatch him up and use him as a hostage. He could be groomed by them into a proper villain. Brandon chose him to be sucked into the SR, because we have not seen him very much and he intends to show his character a bit more.

Yeah, it's child champion time. Going to the spiritual realm gives him an opportunity to see how Dalinar treated Elhokar, specifically the scene where Dalinar knocks him around and take power from him. Gavinor has sworn to kill everyone who "hurt" his dad. It might also give Odium a chance to talk to Gavinor and convince him to turn on Dalinar. He's not quite a suckling babe, but he probably still sucks his thumb. My theory about the Death Rattles is they are a little off because he's going to use them twice. Once in the front half and once in the back half.

Alternatively, I think it would be hilarious if he was sent into a different series. He gets spit out in a garbage strewn alley in 1980s Mistborn no clue what's going on.

Will he be naked and ask some punks who listen to Metal Music (pun intended 😉) for their cloths?

If Gavinor some how grows up in the spiritual realm, that might be a total succession war situation with Jasnah. Jasnah always feared threats would come from within the family.
