Short answer is that we don't know for sure. Implication is that he was (at least partially) manifesting Connection to Odium (since Gold is Odium's true color - Red is corrupted investiture and "purple-ish" is Honor's blue tinted with red taint). The only WoB I could find on the topic is:

Questioner

Kaladin's fight with the [Pursuer], his eyes are described glowing a color not quite the same as usual for corrupted Investiture. Is this supposed to be that he's burning a different Light?

Brandon Sanderson

No, it’s more he's on the border of some dangerous stuff.

I suspect the "Dangerous Stuff" was related to this:

Matt

Were you tempted to have Kaladin be taken by Odium?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes, I was tempted.

Matt

What is it the held you back from doing that?

Brandon Sanderson

Kaladin, if I were going to do it, I would have done it with Dalinar. The reason being that Kaladin as a theme represents his triumph over the darker parts of his mind. And Dalinar represents that too, but he also represents in some ways, succumbing to those. Like those are both themes for Dalinar, and for Kaladin it just would not ever have worked--I don't think--reasonably well. And beyond that, Kaladin is not scary as a villain, because Kaladin's strength comes from the people he's trying to protect. Kaladin's really scary to face when he thinks you're going after somebody he's trying to keep safe, that is when Kaladin is dangerous. Or as you saw in Rhythm of War, when you've gone too far, right? But Kaladin as an overarching villain, I don't think would be scary. Dalinar would be; Dalinar would be terrifying in that situation, but I don't think it would just add very much. If I were going to have had one of them, it would have been Dalinar.

Minor side-note, but I believe the "purplish" instance are supposed to indicate the Stygian Color inversion of Odium's native Gold, rather than a Corruption-red plus the Blue of Honor.

"Voidlight" (hasn't been named, I know) has been described as black with some violet to it. Is this because it's actually absorbing light-gold from all light hitting it?

Brandon Sanderson

I do call it Voidlight in the new book, so you can certainly call it that.

I'm more trying to describe the phenomenon of Stygian colors, which is how I imagine Voidlight. But your explanation probably has some plausible science to it as well.

Copy - I thought the Stygian effect was for the Anti-Lights (warping). Remembered wrong.

Thank you

I don't feel that I'm understanding what Brandon is getting at in your spoiler tag...

Spoiler

Obviously there is some sort of connection going on with Kaladin and Odium. I haven't read RoW in a while, but I remember Kaladin being at the end of his emotional rope. He was spent, exhausted, extremely depressed, and I think pretty angry with the Pursuer by the time their ultimate showdown hit. I also recall him hitting the point on not giving a damn about the Pursuer and telling him to flee. Is that the "dangerous stuff" that Kal was messing with? Moving into a mode of beating down the Pursuer publicly and emotionally? He basically beat him by embarrassing and discrediting him...and I suppose that could be seen as winning in an Odium way more than an Honor one? Either way, I'm not super confident that I am getting that correctly.

Unfortunately we just don't know. I think the point of the answer was to be a "no" to burning a different light. However, I would note that his Bond to Syl is what makes his eyes pale-blue (and did so even before the Third Oath - just didn't last long). So, while that's not conclusive, it implies that he may have been on the verge of becoming Odium's Champion (maybe through some kind of Bond) and the process was stopped by swearing the Fourth Oath.
WoR Ch 2:

Spoiler

“We’re still darkeyes, Moash.”

“Not you,” Skar said from his other side. “I saw your eyes during the—”

“Stop!” Kaladin said. He took a deep breath. “Just stop. No more talk of that.”

Skar fell silent.

Guys…

Autonomy’s soldiers are soldiers “of red and gold”

I, personally, think that Autonomy had some play in this. Somewhere else, a thread very similar that I cannot find, someone said it might be a magic system coming from the Passions.

But the Passions not only embody Odium, they also embody Autonomy, who supposedly values individuality and thinking, and feeling, for one’s self.
