Bringing together a few old topics to rediscuss what we know and suspect about Melishi (without SA5 Spoilers).

Prompted by a Q&A, since no recent topics were duscussing this idea:

Hi all, I'm new here but I've been reading Cosmere since Elantris, and need to bounce a theory off people.

I recently took a deep dive into the wiki to get ready for WaT, and got stuck on wanting to know why the Sibling was so bitter towards humans, and towards her previous Bondsmith, Melishi.

I have a few thoughts on this, and was wondering if someone could point me to a topic on it, as I'm sure I'm not the first to consider it.  Or I'd love to start a chat on it here if people have thoughts.

Cause my question was about if breaking the oath of Unite would have broken that Bondsmith's oaths, since they basically genocided the singers instead of uniting them in a common cause.

I had a thought on how that might have damaged the bond with the Sibling, since that's clearly not uniting ..

@LadyCallista - welcome to the Shard. This is the preferred method for returning to old Topics without actually necroing a thread. Please see the Sharder FAQ for more tips on this forum (since all forums are slightly different).

Please feel free to expand on your theory and ideas here. I agree it is possible that either Melishi broke an Oath by capturing BAM (or planning to do so), but it also might be possible that Sibling broke the bond (or tried to do so) because of the plan - in order to protect themselves from the consequences should Melishi's action break their Oath and Bond.

Welcome to the Shard!

I think it's likely, but I hesitate only because Im not sure the Timeline works right from a Nahel Bond standpoint: Im assuming Melishi would have needed Bondsmith Powers to trap BAM where and How they did, so the Sibling could not have preemptively ended the Bond before the act. But if the act itself was a complete violation of the Oaths then the Sibling should have taken more Harm from it than we saw, regressing like Syl that time perhaps even become a Deadeye like Testament.

We know that no Bondsmith existed during the Recreance and the Sibling ended their bond before it happened. We also know that Re-Shephir was captured by a Lightweaver, not a Bondsmith. Dalinar was able to capture Thrill not because of his Bondsmithing powers, but because he knew it well - probably the same was needed to capture Mishram. The Tower was abandoned before Mishram was imprisoned, I doubt Melishi was still bonded with the Sibling after all of this. RoW ch 87:

"We were fortunate that no Bondsmiths existed at the time of the Recreance, though how the Sibling knew to end their bond early is a matter of dispute"

OB ch 30:

Re-Shephir was terrified of it happening again. The imprisonment had been unexpected, presumed impossible. And it had been done by a Lightweaver like Shallan, who had understood this creature.

My understanding is that the Recreance happened later on and was not the same event as you describe.  I was thinking a Bondsmith's powers were needed to capture BAM because of the Connection changes that occurred (but that could easily have been own BAM's powers and not the Radiants), and also [WoT preview Spoilers]

Spoiler

the fact that BAM's Gem was then somehow hidden in the Spiritual Realm rather than either of the other two.

Yes, the Recreance and the imprisonment are two separate events, but were probably days or hours apart from each other. The effects of the imprisonment could be felt by everyone who belonged to Roshar (by the Sibling's words), so Radiants didn't need a lot of time to realize what a mess they'd made. This is also the reason why I said if the Sibling banished everyone from the Tower, why would they choose not to break their bond as well?

Connection changes are most likely Mishram's doing, or rather she Connected herself to all Singers via some method and capturing her in a gemstone ripped all those Connections out (just like capturing Jezrien in a gemstone was immediately felt by every Herald because their Connection was broken, even though it took weeks for Jez's soul to fully fade). Bondsmith is not needed for that.

I think it's best to avoid ANY WaT spoilers outside of the Spoiler Zone.

To ask a question about your comment behind the spoiler tag, because I really want to know...

Spoiler

How does one hide a physical object in the SR, when the SR isn't a physical place?

Edit: Oops, I somehow skipped right over the description that it's from WaT preview chapters. I guess I'll wait until I read about it. My bad.

There is another possible consideration, but it comes from the latest WaT chapter.  Spoilering and going to try to be cagey.  Please let me know if we should move this specific idea to another board.

Spoiler

It was revealed that a certain bond has a specific limitation. Perhaps that limitation caused a dulling of certain things.  I would really like to talk about this more, but I don't know how to do so without circumventing spoiler policy on this board or basically recreating the same topic.

*edit* Starting a topic on WaT board on this.  Thanks @LewsTherinTelescope for the ok.
