Long Game 102: Re-Awakening at the House on the Hill

"The House is clearly warping time and space here. Poor Kirc."

Leander took a moment to look for a weapon. Though Kirc's body looked... decayed... there were still signs that his death matched the others. Yet there was nothing to be found.

Her search the night before had revealed so little. No supplies to help them survive longer. Only chalk marks with hints of whatever magic powered it. Nothing helpful for what they were facing.

Someone had killed Kirc, though. Few that remained could be considered innocent. But who would they choose to be the House's next victim?

"Junior Junior has need rather quiet as of late. What do you know of the House and it's machinations?"

Junior Junior ran through the hall.

He couldn't believe what had happened to him over the last few days. The House had seemingly forced his companions to turn against each other. He'd been hearing voices in his sleep, saying that only the last two standing could leave. He was sure the others had made the same dreams.

He had avoided company even more than usual since a few days, fearful that one of the others might kill him. "Should never have come here", he muttered under his breath. "I knew nothing good would come out of this." 

His steps had taken him to the room he'd found the other night. On the wall, were traces of gunshots. Probably pretty old. Maybe another bunch of adventurers had been trapped here before, just like them. 

However, the gun itself was nowhere to be found. He was starting to think another one had picked it up. Maybe even used it on Kirc, Kanem, or the priest. He needed to know who had it

 

He returned to the hall, where the others were waiting for him. They were pressing him to choose who to kill today. But Junior Junior didn't want to kill anyone. He was tired of this evil game the house was playing on them.

On the other hand, he also didn't want to die. And so, he muttered a name.

"Aero Yee."

The House's power was waxing with the death of each additional explorer. Where on the first night, the heartbeart could only be heard as a faint echo following other sounds, now the thumps could be felt everywhere and by everyone. The House focused its power and will on the four remaining visitors, who were faced off against each other in the foyer. From the start of the day, it was clear that Junior and the other guy were working together. The House had barely needed to nudge them to threaten to kill Aero Yee. Leander had been harder to subvert, but soon she saw reason and joined with Aero to resist the other two. And here the House realized it had erred, for both sides were willing to kill, but neither could obtain the upper hand. So it watched, and waited.

Eventually, by some fluke of chance, The Nameless recluse slipped while dodging a blow from Aero, and hit his head on a protruding wall decoration with a sharp *crack*. He slumped to the ground, and it was clear from the dent in his head that he wouldn't rise again. Junior Junior froze for a moment, holding his hands in the air as he backed away from the fresh corpse. Then he bolted into the depths of the House. Leander and Aero, slower to react, began to chase their final opponent.

The House, slightly frustrated that the death had been accidental, turned its attention to the halls where Junior had vanished. Just a few more deaths, and it would reach its full potential.
