"Ok" he drawls'. Dang it, I wanted to meet this other epic. He silently curses. And now I am stuck with babysitting duty. Following Swordfish, out onto the streets he jogs back towards the edges of the floating island.  

Once they are out on the streets, Swordfish jogs alongside Aries. He considered giving the lackey the slip, but then it was likely word would travel back to Fish, if the gravity Epic's action of blindly reporting to Fish was any indication. Better to have him tag along. That way the other Epic would have skin in the game as well.

"Hey. Aries right? Look, hear me out. I'm guessing you want to do more than act as a glorified weed whacker for these plants. I have a plan that could do some real damage to Sundew's operation. You heard me talk about that minor illusionist Epic that went AWOL, Mesmerize, right? I think he's working with Sundew, or at least that something else is going down. I say we head back to where Mesmerize was last located and investigate around a bit, find some leads."

"And then," he added hastily, "we can go back and trim the weeds. It's not like they'll be going anywhere."

That does make sense he thinks to himself, but who do I want to anger more, Fish, my boss, or some jumped up whippersnapper, who will probably lead to me being killed by not following Fish's orders... "I am going to continue with the job I have been given. getting on Fish's bda side is not something I want to get on" Aries calls back over his shoulder. 

This illusion epic though might earn you some credit to be more than a lackey. He swears he has a little angel on one shoulder and demon on the other. No, I am going to do my job

Where does Fish find these Epics? They lacked vision. That's why they remained lackeys. Maybe a little nudge in the right direction was all he needed.

"You think Fish really cares about some plants? He didn't even know they existed before you reported to him from what I could tell. It's just busy work to keep you engaged. You'll clean up the plants, and then he'll send you to do more busy work. He's not gonna notice if those plants are gone today or a few days from now. But if you help me out, and we find Mesmerize and possibly even get a lead on Sundew, you might get some real credit. No risk, no reward."

Swordfish slows his pace down a little, time for the finishing blow.

"Look, I thought I'd offer you a piece of the pie. But I guess if you want to spend time whacking weeds, be my guest. You'd actually be doing me a favor, I can take credit for that too. I mean, between his protégé and a lackey, who is Fish really gonna believe anyway? I'm gonna head over and start investigating.  See you round, lackey."

He turns and starts jogging the other direction, with a smirk on his face. Either Aries joins him and they're implicated in this together, or the gravity Epic cleans up the plants and Swordfish takes credit for helping.

He had been planning on taking the next boat, but he was certain that Plastique would be using it and he didn’t want to get that close. On the other hand, Fish had probably sent her to deal with Sundew, so it would good to learn what they were going to discuss. Additionally if he waited for too long, he risked someone finding him. Andrew did say to keep an eye on her, and she’s going to sundew. I guess there’s only one thing to do. Slipping off his rifle, he descends the building and starts walking casually through the crowded dock, following Plastique.

As Plastique strode through the dockyard, she grew more and more excited with each step. This is where she was meant to be, interacting with the two most powerful figures in the city at once. Fish had rightly decided to bring her along, which logically meant she was seen as the third most powerful figure in the city. She was actually the most powerful, of course, but she had yet to convince every one of that fact.

First impressions were important, so she planned her opening line for her meeting with Sundew while approaching her destination.

Sounded like she wanted someone to take her to their leader.

Hello, I’m Plastique.

Sundew probably already knew who she was.

Maybe she’d let Fish take care of the initial greeting. She wasn’t sure why exactly they were holding a meeting in the first place. Perhaps Fish simply wanted to introduce Plastique to Sundew, prepare her for her inevitable rise to a high station within his faction.

She didn’t notice the man following her, too absorbed in her musings. She rarely bothered to watch for any enemies potentially tailing her, anyways. With her enhanced reflexes, she’d melt before any attack had the chance to damage her. Paranoia wasn’t a good look on anyone. It was also just too much of a hassle.

Aries hesitated, a frown on his face, as he concentrated on his own thoughts. What he says is true. But do I want to obey Fish. Yes. The answer seems to pop into his mind on his own violation. Yet, it feels wrong, even to himself. WHy do I want to be someone's lackey. To gain importance, and so they can make decisions for you his head seems to say.

Memories surface, of another life, following in someone else's shadow. His brothers.

15 yrs, 11 & 1/2 months ago

"Come on Aaron, stop being such a baby." his brother yells at him, from the outside of his room. 

Aaron lay on his bed, his Mickey Mouse covers over his head crying, and holding a torn toy in his hands. The two pieces of his stuffed sheep, were mangled, edges frayed. "Sheepy, sheepy, sheepy" he cried. Holding it against him. 

His brother had decided for him that it was time that he stopped playing with his stuffed toys. That is what had started the fight, and had ended with his brother tearing most of them in two, including the one he had had since the day he was born. It was a small white fluffy creature, that held so much importance to him, especially after his mother had died. 

His brother slams on the door again, the hinges creaking at the treatment, bending somewhat. The lights flicker this time, as his brother whacks the door again, and again, and again. During one of these times, the lights go out, and the darkness traps him, and he hears the door shatter.

Present Day

Do I want to be anyone's lackey, after what happened then. No. The answer rings in his body. This time however, he knows that it feels right. "I will not be anyone's lackey, least of all yours Swordfish." Aries calls out to the other Epic. "So you can go and search for this missing epic of yours, but don't drag me into something that you will not be able to finish."

Swordfish slows his pace as he hears Aries's reply. Not able to finish this? His arms itched, begging to be loosened on this other Epic who dared talk to him like that.

You failure. You know you're weak. You're going to turn around and face him, are ya? He'll know he hit a nerve. A sign of weakness.

He stopped and whirled around, arms forming into blades, face contorted with an ugly expression. Who was this...this underling? This peon. That dared to say he would fail.

So what now that, after you've exposed yourself? You want to stab him? How cute. What, you think he wouldn't be able to toss you into a building before you laid a finger on him. You loser.

No. Calm down. Blades reformed to hands. He took a breath.

Calm down. As if. More like shut up and save your own skin. But go ahead, I want to see your rationalization for this one.

This was just a lowly servant of Fish. It was laughable that this fool thought he wasn't Fish's lackey, doing his bidding. That he was his own master. Of course, every Epic had to think this way to maintain their sanity in this hierarchical world. Power was everything. Very few reached the level of accolade Swordfish had achieved.

Bravo. A great performance. And now for the pièce de résistance.

"Your loss Aries. When I find Mesmerize and do something worthwhile, I'll make sure to put a special note in to Fish for you, don't worry I won't forget. I'm sure you'll love your reward for all the help you provided."

Swordfish turned and headed into the city, teeth gritted. No more waiting for him to reply, cajoling him to join in. This fool would pay.

That's it. Turn and run away and then tattle on him. Who's the real lackey here?

Phalanx heads towards Fish’s building, and walks up to the receptionist. 

“May I schedule a meeting with Fish?”

Good. Both the Epics are leaving. That should save Fish another headache, as long as they’re not too fast with their task. He’s still got at least an hour until he needs to be at the docks.

For now, Fish resigns himself to his office work. Pages and pages of reports fill his desk, with several about Sundew. Boring, boring, boring. Epics like Fish are meant to be out staking claims on territory, not sitting here running a city. Someone’s gotta do it, though, and he’s taken it upon himself to make sure his hard work in securing the city doesn’t go to waste.

Fish’s door is slightly ajar, so he hears someone asking his receptionist for a meeting with him. As much as he’d rather yell at the person to go away, it gives him an excuse to ignore his deskwork for a longer period of time. He stands and opens his door. The person talking to his new (incompetent) receptionist is someone Fish has never seen before. They’ve got the air of an Epic, but Fish isn’t too sure. Best to approach with caution so that his headquarters doesn’t get destroyed.

Likely an Epic. No non-Epic would walk up to Fish and just request a meeting like that, and ignore Fish's question about who they are. Usually there would be a lot more cowering and stammering. And who’s this Epic’s client? Unless there’s a new faction in the city, Fish could guess that it’s Ignis. Sundew doesn’t send lackeys. If it is Ignis who wants a meeting, it was a huge mistake for the fire Epic to not talk to Fish by himself. Means that Ignis’s weak. Fish would never make that oversight.

Let's see who this Epic is, Fish thinks. He crosses his arms. “Who are you.”

Shaper walks amongst his fog towards the local Epic’s Headquarters. 

I will get a job here he thinks. A random person enters his field, and Shaper Kills them, Solidifying the Fog in their throat. The person cries out, then falls to the ground. 

As he nears the HQ, Shaper notices the doorway is open. Odd. I’d heard Fish was the paranoid type…
