Shadow of Electrum he/him Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 I've been rereading Mistborn and some of the things that steel inquisitors do make me giggle. Specifically I remember thinking it was a little funny that they had a whole celebration after converting Marsh. Mind you they were dismembering people but I just thought a bunch of these monsters rejoicing like this was funny. I also think the fact that they have to sleep so much is a bit funny. Like one guy can return from slaughtering a whole family, but then he has to go to bed because he sweepy. Uh please don't think I'm psychotic or something I just saw a bit of humor in how unapologetically evil these guys are. 2
Pruning the Blackthorn he/him Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 Gancho, I get tired walking around the block, so I can only imagine how tiring mass murder is. “Mass genocide is the most exhausting activity one can engage in…next to soccer.” —Loki, from the movie Dogma 2

Well they have to sleep after regular old murder too because of all the healing they store, but I think the duality of it is still a little funny.

Yes, I know. I was just making a joke. 1

In all fairness, like Ruin who corrupted them, they have become caricatures, having lost their humanity. You literally have Marsh under the influence of Ruin looking up into a blood-red ash-choked sky and thinking about how beautiful it is. It's totally goofy and over the top, especially if you look at it as Ruin playing with his puppets like dolls, giving them persona(s), and tucking them in bed for night-night. It can totally be humorous. Right up until you look at what this is doing to Marsh, still aware and unable to even kill himself to stop the atrocities caused by his own hands, even when those hands are trying to kill his friends. 5

No, the funny part is that the god of destruction who makes soulless monstrosities is ginger. Edited January 19, 2024 by Argenti 4
The Sibling she/her Posted January 19, 2024 Posted January 19, 2024 Thinking about the inquisitors this way does kind of make them seem like caricatures. They're always celebrating stuff they're aggressively evil to the point of going a little bit overboard. I could definitely see this humorous way of looking at them in book one, but for me after we get to WoA and HoA where Marsh is fighting against Ruin's influence, it becomes all too real for me and not really so funny anymore. 2

Yeah I definitely get this. I think I only see the humor now because I'm rereading it. I definitely felt more serious on my first read and the whole arc with marsh was a lot, but I think now that I've already processed the current events of Mistborn that it's easier for me to poke fun at this stuff. 1
Voidlit Man he/him Posted January 20, 2024 Posted January 20, 2024 A lot of the time the Koloss come of as funny to me, aswell. It's a society of passive gents that occasionally murder the others because their foot got stepped on or something. Obviously in real life it would be terrible, but since the book is Fantasy, I'm allowed to laugh at brutal murder (I think, otherwise I'm a psychopath) 2

The first words of The Hero of Ages: "Marsh struggled to kill himself." Absolutely chilling. It's no wonder he's dedicated himself to Harmony. This is a goal he understands, and he can seek atonement with what time he has left. Just...beautiful.
