I honestly can't remember if I read Elantris or Mistborn: TFA first, but I'm leaning towards Mistborn. I loved the originality of the world; too many fantasy worlds are either too straightforward--"ooh look, the farm boy has magical powers, let's go kill this world's evil"--too idealized--"let's follow the good guys and kill the bad guys"--or too long to get into easily. Even the first part of TFE told me that the world was hardly a utopia, and even once I met the characters I couldn't tell where the plot was going. I also love the Sanderson world politics: everyone has their own motivations, resources, and strategies; no "I want to rule the world" here.

I was given WoK to read first, but I never got past page 100 the first time I tried it. A lot of it made no sense to me because I didn't know about the cosmere, and hadn't read any of the other books yet. I ended up stopping WoK, and the first full book I read was Mistborn, (The Final Empire).

I remember I first actually read Elantris. It was a pretty good book, although I never really took very much note of the author at that point.

Then later completely independent from this, I discovered the mistborn trilogy. It was perhaps one of the best series I had ever encountered.

Then I realized they were both written by this guy called Brandon Sanderson. And subsequently read the SA books, warbreaker, and emperor's soul.

Elantris ! I picked it up randomly a few years ago at my local library, finding the summary intriguing, and started to read immediately to have an idea of the content. That first scene with Raoden got me hooked right away.

I wouldn't stop reading so when I finished the first book (this edition was split), my brother looked up Brandon's other works and ordered the first book of Mistborn along with the complete edition of Elantris.

I think that's the first time I really fell in love with an author. After I finished the last Mistborn book, that's only then that I made the connection with another fantasy book I had bought in English even before i read Elantris. It was the WoK. I remember i liked the prologue but didn't understand English well enough at that time to go on much further.

So my first time is technically with the WoK but really, it's Elantris.

I also heard about Brandon through Wheel of Time. I had heard multiple times that Mistborn was what led Harriet to ask Brandon to finish the series, and a lot of people tend to recommend Mistborn after finishing on the WoT subreddit. After a second reread of that series I was itching for something fresh, and decided to finally give Mistborn a shot.

It was alright, but not as good as I was expecting. Nothing like Wheel of Time.

But then I read the beginning of Stormlight and discovered exactly what I had been itching for. Then I heard about the Cosmere and I got swallowed up completely.

I found out about Brandon at a library. Some librarian put, according to the description on the back, the first book of the Mistborn series on display. It sounded really cool, so I decided to take it and immediately ducked to look for other parts. And I found them! All three novels of the trilogy. Something about ascension and another one called The final empire, so it is probably the last one (final things tend to be at the end)...

You can imagine how surprised I was at home when I found too exactly same titles. And both of them were the first book...At least I understood why the librarian who checked off my books looked so suspiciously at me.

Well, this happened about...3 years ago? :D But thanks to Sanderson I could finaly fully enjoy the Discworld series (which are great, but even greater in context of more tradittional fantasy) and got an A from the end-of-high-school exams from English, so, yes, one of the best things that could happen to me :)

Oh, I saw your post count and read it as if it just happened. Haha. Very cool to hear, though.

TL;DR: Brandon's awesome.

My dad found out about Brandon the same way, and got all of his kids obsessed with him. :)

I've posted this on the welcome thread but I just noticed this one and thought I'd add it again. I found Brandon through fate. I was at my local bookstore to pick up A Knight of Westeros by GRRM and found a discarded copy of WoK right in front of it on the shelf. After standing a few moments in awe of the cover art, I read the prologue and promptly decided that I would be skipping the food court on my way out of the mall.

This took place on 9/24/16. A month later and I'm now halfway through Well of Ascension and  really enjoying myself. Brandon's books are just so much FUN to read. I just finished ASOIAF, and it has been a really refreshing change of pace to move on from Martin.  So much so that I still haven't cracked the cover on A Knight of Westeros.

I've always loved fantasy as a huge Harry Potter fan, Mortal Instruments, etc. I'm a personal trainer and was discussing books with one of my clients, and she told me I should check out Brandon Sanderson.  I think either Mistborn or The Rithmatist was my first and I was hooked!

I first heard about Brandon after I finished Wise Man's Fear by Pat Rothfuss. Brandon had a blurb for that book, and then I found out that Rothfuss had a blurb for one of Brandon's book. Rothfuss is one of my all time favorite authors, so I had to check it out.

First was WoK, and now about a year later, I'm finishing my last Cosmere novel, Warbreaker.

If you've finished it, how did it feel to be pulled by the strings of Brandon's words, without even realizing how you were being deceived...

I didn't know whether I should've felt grateful, depressed or offended.

Steelheart was mine. I'm a super big comics and fantasy/sci-fi nerd and I LOVED the idea of dystopian superheroes. My friends recommended the book, and I read it. Over the summer, I found The Final Empire in my local library and blazed through it, eventually stepping up my addiction with higher and higher doses until I read the Way of Kings. Now, I wait until I buy Words of Radiance and await Oathbringer.

WoR is absolutely everything that was good about WoK x2. I can't stress enough how awesome it is.

My friend Braden had been bugging me for forever to read Mistborn. We'd always shared books and swapped author names, but for some reason it took me far too long to pick up Mistborn. I blew through the first book and demanded I get the next. Then he informed me of a "wild west steampunk sequel" and I devoured that too. In the meantime, I was forcing all of my friends to read it as well. (Thanks to Saige and TRG for putting up with my constant fangirling and probably spoiling a thing or two.)

I was hesitant to start Stormlight Archives because I had mistakingly assumed that Sanderson had written the entire series. I didn't want to start something so long in the middle of a tough high school term. When I found out that there was only one book (at the time) I pounced on it, and the sequel came out about three days later.

At that point I decided that Sanderson was nothing less than the Best Author Ever, so I read Warbreaker via Wattpad, bought Elantris, and absolutely had to get Mistborn: Secret History. I also read Steelheart, Mitosis and Calamity somewhere in there, but I'm not sure how it fits into the timeline.  I'm still waiting to read a few novellas and short stories, but hopefully Christmas clears that up.

damnation you've read more than me. How much do you know about the Cosmere?

I'm pretty behind in Cosmere theory, but I know just about all there is to know from the books I've read. So I'm armed with all the basic information, but nothing that the fans have dreamed up while I was off re-re-reading.
