"The guys I work with are very well-versed in obscure magic."

"I wouldn't want to do anything that could put either of you in danger... Do you think it's safe to go meet with these people when we have someone with a bounty?"

"You can get out of the universe?" Allera hadn't even thought of that as a possibility until now.

"My people aren't interested in bounties. The difficulty would be getting away from this universe..."

"I'm sure I'll be fine without their... treatment. I can weather whatever this curse entails." Variance did not sound very confident.

My apologies. My computer locked at 11. I can be on for another half hour now, though.

"Presumably. If I can get in, I can get out." Ayia shrugged. "But you never know. Things get difficult when the rules of reality are different from place to place."

"Let us help. Please."

Ayia shrugged. "You've trusted us enough this far. I think that's all we need to trust you back."

"That seems like a low bar." He began twitching again, and gritted his teeth, trying firmly to keep it under control.

"And," Ayia added, "all... this? If you wanted a completely selfish explanation it'd be that watching you squirm around like that is really uncomfortable. But more than anything... whoever you are, pain isn't the sort of thing you're supposed to just let someone feel."

"I've been feeling pain for millions of years. I can handle it."

"You said you weren't living or dead."

"I'm not sure what I am. But my human self was killed some time ago. If that could be done to me again, I imagine I wouldn't have been imprisoned, just executed."

"It's hard to keep track of time, but I believe so."

"But you can still feel things. Just because you've been in pain for millions of years doesn't mean you have to keep hurting."

Ayia was quiet, thinking, then said, "So what would you want to do, then?"

"Whatever you see fit. I am in your debt."

Allera's beak turned down. "Just because you can handle pain doesn't mean you have to live with it. You deserve better."

"Who says I deserve better?" Variance's image fuzzed again, and this time, it changed. The blood was gone, and his clothing had changed from a cloak to a simple shirt and pants. Without the blood, his eyes were quite striking in their glowing violet. "See? I'm fine anyway."

"It is merited. I've thought about this a lot, even if my mind has been... cursedly stagnant."
