"Well..." Ayia stood back up, scratching the back of her neck. "If he dies in the next five minutes, then I doubt there would've been anything we could have done in the first place."

“Oh. Oh hells, okay. Here’s what we’re going to do. Listen closely.

“When we get there, leave the ship. I’ll stay on it with Variance. You’ll be on a planet called Varkas. When you leave the ship, you’re going to be in a major spaceport. Someone will ask you for your registration card. When they do, give them this.” Allera dug in a pocket of their trousers, and took out a thin piece of metal covered in tiny dents. They handed it to Ayia. Without waiting for a response, they continued: “Walk forward two street blocks, then turn right and walk one more block; to your left will be a TM — er — a transaction machine, if you don’t know; other universe and all that; right. Anyway, you’ll want to tap this card on it. It’ll pull up an account with a significant amount of money. Withdraw four hundred ilak. Then, walk one more block in the same direction. You’ll see a flower shop. Go inside; tell the clerk Allera sent you — that’ll get their attention — then give them a hundred of the ilaks and tell them it’s urgent; that they have a friend that needs help. If all’s well, the’ll go in back and get my friend, who will go with you back to the ship. When you get back, I’ll be gone. I’m not going to tell you where I’m going, but rest assured that I’ll be back once they’re gone.

“Got all that?”

“Good enough. We’re almost there — get ready.” Allera looked at Variance with concern.

"Wonderful. In that case, I should be good to go."

Do we just want to skip to when she gets back, or is there some interaction to be had?

Chits. Twenty ilaks each.

The shop was somewhat of an anomaly. Wedged between two large, imposing buildings, it looked more than a bit out of place. Unlike most of the buildings Ayia had passed, it practically burst with life; only three stories tall, plants of all kinds adorned every inch of its wooden frame, to the point where it looked like it was made of curling vines and bright, colorful flowers.

“How can I help you?” asked the clerk, a bespectacled Winged with sleek grey-and-black feathers.

Um. What.

Gales. Allera tapped on one of the walls twice, and a small compartment opened up, which they slid into and closed.

Would Variance slide in? If so, how? Also, this is someone specifically seeking out Variance, though they won't admit that.

The knocking grew louder, "Hello? What is this thing?"

No. Allera’s trying to save their own hide here — it doesn’t occur to them that anyone would be looking for/want to cause harm to Variance.

Allera didn’t respond. They tried to keep their breathing steady.

It’s okay. In… out… in… out…

"If there's someone there, you should know that I'm going to report this... thing to the authorities! Now's your last chance!"

What?

If the person was here for Allera, this was an odd way of getting their attention.

They decided to take a risk. “This spaceship is fully registered and authorized,” they said, stepping out of the compartment. “What ‘thing’ do you speak of?”

Actually, I definitely should have asked what the ship looks like, and if someone can see inside it from the ground. And where did they land?
